Monster Mom

Monster mom 1 of 2 

Prerna hears some light mummer from the baby monitor at the bedside table and sits up quietly as not to disturb Mr Bajaj asleep beside her. 

Little Sneha seemed to be awake.

Walking into the nursery, Prerna switches on the light as she enters to the room.
There she is  Sneha standing in her cot pinning for her teddy she’d thrown out to the other side of the room!

Picking up the bear on her way closer into the room Prerna smiles first at the gentle looking soft toy and then at little Sneha who’s little smile couldn’t be more smiley. Seeing her mom and her teddy made her smile.

‘Teddy’ mumbles Sneha happily staring down at her bear. 

Prerna caresses Sneha under the chin lovingly. “Bedtime?” She Suggests. 

For a moment Sneha looks up with her big brown eyes and for a split second Snehas eyes remind Prerna of someone else.

Anurag to be precise,  brushing that thought away Prerna kisses the crown of Snehas head and lifts her gently to tuck in her beside her teddy and wishes her goodnight. “Sweet dreams”

Closing the door to the nursery Prerna a moment to think. It was something and nothing she tells herself and walks towards her room. 

..

The next morning as Prerna makes her way down to the kitchen she stops to by Snehas room yet again. It was early and Sneha wouldn’t be awake yet but she liked to check on her. As expected when she walked into the nursery she found her little one asleep. Her little chest falling and then rising. She’d slept with a smile. Dreaming about whatever babies dreamt about. Rainbows, toys and mischief came to mind!

Caressing Snehas hair a little Prerna smiled good “morning beta” she whispered.  Again after a little while as she looked closer at her daughter she saw one or two of her features resembling her biological father 

Closing her eyes Prerna hoped this would go away. 

…

Later that afternoon as George made lunch for the girls. Mash potato on special request from kuki George kept an eye Sneha who’d recently discovered the television. She was allowed 5 mins of cartoons a day and even that was plenty to give her clever mind lots of ideas. 

When there seemed to be a cute baby roar from in the lounge did George look over the stove to see Sneha hidden behind a cushion in front if the television. 

“What’s the matter miss Sneha! Said George 

“monster, monster” shouted Sneha. 

“So it is” smiled George looking over at the childrens cartoon that featured a friendly green monster. How it did have funny teeth and seemed to be stomping about breaking things and making loud sounds. 

Sneha didn’t like the monster it seemed, she was frightened by it. 

“it’s In the tv, it can’t get out” reassured George but Sneha wasn’t convinced. 

…

After a little bit of tv and lunch school holidays were the best especially for Sneha who had Kuki to play with all day! 

Sneha showed Kuki some of the stuff she got up to like, posting cutlery through the letter box ! Yes that was fun. 

Or Hiding George’s glasses or putting her baby things in the microwave for others to find 

Whilst Kuki showed Sneha some of the things she knew.  Stuff like wrapping themselfs in all the toilet roll they could find so they looked like mummy’s from accent Egypt or using bedsheets to build secret dens or the best & most loved one trying on the grown ups clothes. The Mischief went on and on ! 

..

“Sneha! Kuki !!” Prerna shouts having walked past a trail of toilet paper across the house from the study to the kitchen and  then finding orange juice in the kettle as she tried to add hot water to her mug and the final straw was when she opened up her paperwork at the kitchen counter and found it decorated with Snehas scribbles. 

“Sneha!!! She shouted louder now

Both girls turned up looking adorable as usual. Snehas animated eyes and smile  infuriated Prerna. Or was it the glimmer of Anurag that made her loose her cool?

“Naughty step now!” Sneha heard her mother say whilst kuki tried to reason 

..”But mom” 

Prerna refused to hear another word. “No excuses” she made clear with very cross eyes.

..

“I’ll stay here with you”, said Kuki who wasn’t in as much trouble as Sneha but wasn’t going to leave her baby sister on her own and accompanied her to the staircase and sat by her side.

…

Later as the girls heard the door open and saw their father walk in long lost smiles were found.

Pa! Smiled kuki and Sneha looked up too! 

“What have you two been up to” said Rishabh as he spotted his girls at the staircase (the naughty step) 

They looked like they’d been told off. A surprise to Rishabh who’d never seen the girls punished this way. Squatting a little to be level with them Rishabh looked on with his warm fatherly eyes.

 Kuki seemed her curious and cute self but little Sneha seemed annoyed and upset.

 “Sneha drew all over moms files, I did a few naughty things too but mom went mad at Sneha.” Explained kuki. 

Rishabh cupped the side of Kukis cheek and gave her a comforting smile. He’d heard her and seen little Snehas upset too. It was the first time he’d known Mrs Bajaj to loose her temper at the girls and certainly not single out one over the other. The thought of something more than met the eye did cross Rishabhs mind. 

“And you’re just keeping her company?”

Asked Rishabh and kuki nodded.

Rishabh kissed kuki on the forehead, it was his way of telling kuki she’d done the right thing.

Looking over at Sneha he watched a pair of little angry eyes and a crossed  arms over her blue dungarees. Adorable even when angry. 

Now there was one thing that always worked with Sneha and that was tapping her on the tip of her nose. It made her giggle. 

Rishabh tried once, but Snehas frown remained the same, a second time and still no joy and then a third time she looked up at her da even if she didn’t smile. 

“Monster mom!” She mumbled which might not have made her smile but made him smile for sure. Maybe even giggle. He wondered where she picked her words up from. Kissing her amongst her whispy strands of hair he looked at the pair of them. “Go on, leave your mum to me” he said softly watching them trundle off.
