Half moon glasses  

“Good morning George “ Said Prerna as she rushed past him to leave the house. She had a few errands to run before reaching the office. 

“I need to rush this morning but please serve Mr Bajaj his breakfast, the girls are still sleeping.”

“Sure” said George who’d walked in to begin his day.

“Oh” said Prerna when she spotted Georges uniform was fastened all wrong this morning. He’d gotten the buttons to his waistcoat all muddled. 

Prerna smiled pausing to fix them. 

“Handsome George” she said the way  kuki would  to add  a shiny glimmer to his eyes when she was done. “Thank you Mrs Bajaj” he replied with his rosey cheeks. A compliment was the perfect start to the day.

…

Rishabh having finished reading the newspaper that morning folds it in half and puts it to a side to answer a smiling George stood at the table side.

“Breakfast sir?”

“I’ll take toast and a cup of coffee please George.”

“Marmalade or strawberry sir?”Asks George.  Yes the girls taste for fruit flavoured toppings seemed to have rubbed off on Mr Bajaj lately. “Jam please” he said looking forward to the simple delicacy. 

“Anything else?” Asked George 

“That will be all thank you” smiled Rishabh. 

A few minutes later breakfast had arrived and the aroma was just  delicious. However George had bought marmalade on toast rather than strawberry jam. Now he hardly  ever made a mistake so Rishabh overlooked any he did make on the off chance.

“Thank you George” he said tucking into his breakfast wondering if the coffee had a unusual taste but maybe it was just his imagination.

…

Later that afternoon in the office Prerna opened her lunch box tucked into her salad but had to stop after a few mouth fulls. It seemed as though George had put together something different.

Heading into Mr Bajajs office to suggest they head out for lunch Prerna takes a seat across from her husband to hear him on the phone to the girls. The call was on speaker which meant Prerna could hear the conversation. 

…

“Pa”( it was Kuki)

“Yes love” replied Rishabh hearing Sneha in the background too.

“It’s George, he put orange juice in my cereal  this morning read Cinderella back to front and now  he’s topping our pizza with carrots instead of cheese, I don’t want carrots on my pizza pa!

Rishabh glanced over to Prerna for a minute trying to make out what was going on. Prerna furrowed her eyes thinking back to this morning. 

“Don’t worry we’ll get a takeaway” replied Rishabh to cheer up a distressed kuki.  

“Now can you do me a favour?” he said leaning Back in his office chair 

“Look after George for me won’t you keep  a eye on him”

“Okay Pa I will ” replied kuki putting the phone down. 

Prerna admired the relationship between father and daughter and now  it was just the two of them she could feel the concern in the air.

Call Mrs Green, (George’s wife) she suggested and Rishabh did just that. 

“Oh hello Mr Bajaj everything is alright isn’t it ?” answered a sweet old lady on the phone.

“Yes it is, just a quick question” he began later looking over at his  wife  asking her to listen in.

“You haven’t noticed anything different about George lately?. It’s just that he’s made some usual blunders today.” Prerna at this point had walked around behind her husbands chair and rested her face in his shoulder from above  the headrest of his leather seat. She’d be better at hearing any discrepancy’s in Mary’s answers thought Rishabh. 

“Oh it’s  those eyes of his, he refuses to go get them seen Mr Bajaj he’s been doing silly things all weekend.” 

Both Rishabh and Prerna took a sigh of relief that it was nothing more serious, well so it seemed. 

“Leave it to me Mrs Green,  I know just the person to talk him around” he reassured. 

After the call ended Rishabh looked up above his chair at his at Prerna.

“Kuki?” Suggested Prerna 

“Kuki” he confirmed 

..

Kuki she was doing exactly what her Pa had asked of her to infact maybe too literally because as George looked up from his afternoon tea he saw little Kuki staring at him without a single blink.

“Are you okay George?”  She asked in a cute string of words and George smiled “yes I am thank you” later as he finished his last zip and rose from his chair to clear his cutlery she followed him their too and everywhere else he went. 

…

The next morning the Bajajs had a plan. “Georgeeee”

“Yes miss Kuki” replied George after walking to the breakfast table.

“Can YOU take me to the opticians today please….” Stressed kuki with Rishabh and Prerna pretending it wasn’t at all their doing.

“Of course” replied George.

..

Kuki held George’s hand into the optician store. She had her eye test first climbed onto the chair and red out as many letters as she could. The optician in return gave her a lollipop.

Now your turn George said kuki.

George wasn’t sure but a little encouraging from the doctor and little kuki and he agreed.

Well looks like you need reading glasses Mr Green concluded the Doctor.

Oh I rather not, said George 

But kuki looked up at him with her big brown eyes and he couldnt possibly not do the right thing.

“Too square”

“Too red..”

“Boring”

“Still boring”

“Called out kuki at all the glasses George tried on.”

And then they round the perfect pair of half moon shaped glasses. 

..

That evening as  George goes about the last part of his day this time with his new glasses on everyone smiles a little more then usual as they come across this  new George’. Just as sweet, just as rosy cheeked  sparkly eyed and handsome but even more special then before.

.. 

In bed that night Prerna pulls closer the covers. I’m sure Mrs Green thinks George looks very handsome in his new glasses. 

“I can put mine on if you like Mrs Bajaj”teases Rishabh to which Prerna rolls her eyes. Koi zarurat nahin hai! She  cuts him off snuggling up into his chest.
