PUL SIRAT by : Altaf Hussain

We have seen many dramas in the past that have revolved around religion, and took a step in the right direction. In the recent times, we have seen dramas like Khuda aur Muhabbat, and Main Abdul Qadir Hoon that walked the same path, and now as the name suggests, Pul Sirat is one of them only.
The drama tells of Halal, Haraam, Virtue, and Sin. It has a mammoth star cast that helps in attracting eyeballs.

Story :
Pul Sirat tells the story of different couples/families. There are too many parallel tracks.

1st : It is the story of Momina(Ayeza Khan) who is very religious, and from a poor family. She ends up marrying Asad(Fahad Mustufa) who falls in love with her. The story takes a turn when Momina realizes that her husband is not what she thinks, and is actually an alcoholic who roams around with girls. The story then focuses on the struggle and the conflicts.
This one has the biggest names but is the biggest failure. There is nothing to look forward to and nothing new just happens here.

2nd : Another is the story of Momina's sister(Marium) who is jealous of her sister, and sulks over how her life has turned out. She gets married to a poor man and is unable to cope up with it. The story focuses on the issues the couple has to face. This one shows envy.

This is one track that just was not needed, and is total waste of precious screen time.

3rd : It is the story of Sana Askari's character that hates everyone around her. She gets dumped by her love and gets married to Aijaz Aslam but is unable to bear it. The story focuses on how she deals with it , and how her loyal husband tries his best in getting things right.
The story is quite interesting. The tension between the couple is beautifully shown.

4th : Now this is the most interesting one of them all. This is the story of Momina's neighbours that are very poor. Rashida is a houseworker who has two daughters, and a son Rashid. The mother differentiates between the son and the daughter, and even goes on the wrong path to make her son happy. The result is a son who does not respect anyone, and the daughters that are sick of mother's partiality.

This track is full of twists and turns and every episodes brings you something new. The pace is also very fast.

5th : Surprised? Yes, there is another track. This is of Rashida's daughter who gets married to a man who is not into religion, and how she battles to bring him to the right path makes up the story.
Fortunately this is the last parallel track, and it doesn't work either. Alas, even we think the same. TOO MUCH.
Looks like our writers have ran out of ideas, and out of novels/dramas to get "inspired" from that now they have to add so many tracks to make a serial an interesting one. On the other hand, it looks like the story is more suitable for a soap, than a serial.
So what we think of it? Read on to find out!

Technicalities :
Nadeem Siddiqui is the director here who does a decent job. This isn't the break through but no complains on his part. The story might be weak but the dialogues penned in by Qaisraa Hayaat are beautiful, and leave an impact. The set does not offer anything. I think we are sick of seeing those same houses in all of AB Productions (right?).
Editing is first rate, and so is cinematography. OST isn't promoted well, and rightly so. Mentionable background music is also missing. Kiddo to the make up department.

Characters:
Because we have so many tracks in this drama, we get to see many diverse characters too. Let us dissect the leading ones.
Asad(Fahad Mustufa) is someone who is living a dual life. He plays an alcoholic who has to be the good guy when in front of his family. He is a confused and helpless man. It's a beautifully written character.
Momina(Ayeza Khan) is the perfect daughter, sister, wife, and bahu. The character is nothing different from the usual lady we see in any Star Plus soap who has to go through many battles to win things over.
Aijaz Aslam plays the perfect husband here who is totally in love with his wife, and is firm on the ground. The character is the kind you fall in love with.
Alina(Sana Askari) is a psychotic character that goes through many phases. She is a masochist, and hates everything around her. It is an exceptionally well written character that has many layers to it.

Acting :
The drama boast of some known, and upcoming names . Lets see how they fetch.
Fahad Mustufa plays the alcoholic part nicely, and looks his part. He is at ease in all scenes be it the drunkard ones or the lovely husband. Ayeza Khan has improved a lot. She still has to work on her diction and expression as she looks lost sometime. One must also mention the chemistry these two share. It works.
Sana Askari leaves an impression in a role that any actor would love to do. It offers her to portray many emotions. The actress is superb in the role. Yes, she does go over board at times but still a commendable job. Aijaz Aslam is himself in this role. He does his part sincerely.
Fatime Effendi does total justice to her role. It looks like a tailor made role for her. Pari Hashmi doesn't get much to do. Zarar Khan does well in his small role. Azra Aftab is excellent playing the lovely mother. This is one of her better roles in recent times.
Jahan Ara Hayee sounds like a koel, but is restricted. She is seen living the same character in all her dramas now. Shehryar Zaidi impressed. The guy playing Rashid leaves an impact.Rest of the cast is good.

Over All : This is one drama that comes at the right time when there is dearth, and need of such stories. Based on a novel this one does have a good heart but too many tracks hamper it. The happenings would've been crisper with fewer tracks.
It serves its purpose. Educates, and entertains- but could've been better.

Nice review. But I think Pul Sirat is quite a well written show. Definitely something I look forward to watching every week. Although preferences changes every week between Mastana Mahi and Pul Sirat every thursday.

Coming to the thoughts, I like Ayeza Khan here. She seems very much refined here compared to the initial days of Tootay Huway Per. Much more confident and there's something about her character that brings depth to the show.

Fahad Mustafa for a change just doesn't impress me at all.. I feel its been repeated too much. His character seems very similar to Faisal Qureshi's character in Umm-e-Kulsoom. Also the lady who's playing Asad's Dadi is doing a similar in UEK, only here she plays the mother.

Sana Askari doesnt manage to have the impact that the character she plays should have had. A more mature actress should have done it. There seems to be zero sympathy for her character.

Personally I prefer Rashid, Munni and Rashida's track too. I would like to see how the rest of the story unfolds with time.

Any idea, how many more episodes to go?

Looking forward to reading more reviewa from you guys! Have you done Roag, Ek Hatheli ?

Well, reviews are released when the drama is about to end, or when the reviewer has seen it/knows it someh.w

Pul Sirat is based on a novel, and is dramatized, and I totally agree with you.

jahar Ara(dado) is indeed doing the same thing in all of her shows. She had the same role in Samdhan earlier.
