Raghav tried to push her off, and get up, and as he was about to push her away, he heard something clatter to the floor.

Anjali jumped up, and Raghav got to his feet off the table. It was Pallavi, in the doorway.

Raghav looked at her, and then Anjali, and then started to speak, “No this isn’t what it looks like, I just—“

Pallavi picked up the silver plate that had fallen on the floor, and turned right on the spot and walked away. No, it was more like she ran.

“Wait, what is that cook girl doing here?” Anjali asked.

“Get out, get out, get out.” Raghav basically dragged her to the door and almost threw her out.

He ran to the kitchen, where he saw Pallavi walk in.

She was facing the stove, her head in her hands, she might have been crying.

As Pallavi heard Raghav walk in, she looked up, quickly wiped her tears, and got control of her anger. She had expected this. It’s not like Raghav was ever going to respect her or even treat her as a wife. She didn’t even want to be his wife, so why was she crying? Why was she even angry?

“Pallavi, listen,“ Raghav started, “I—“

Pallavi turned around, her eyes red and puffy, but she kept her voice as even as she could, “I don’t want any explanation, I don’t care, you want to bring women here, you want to go out with women, you want to sleep with them. I DON’T CARE.”

“No, that’s not why she was here—Listen, she was flirting with me, she pushed me—“

“Ah yes, A 120 pound woman got the better of The Raghav Rao, Don of Hyderabad,” Pallavi sneered, “Like I said, I don’t want your explanation, it doesn’t make a difference to me. It’s not like we’re really married, and even if we were, I couldn’t possibly expect you to be a loyal husband.”

Raghav’s anger was floating to the surface again, ok she had a right to be angry, but this was getting to be too much. He walked towards her. She moved sideways away from him and now his back was to the stove and she was near the kitchen door.

“Raghav. I do not give a damn who you are with, where you are with them, or why. But—”

Raghav looked at her, why was she angry, if she didn’t think he was actually her husband.

“But today Amma is coming back from the hospital, and they will be here any minute, so at least for today, keep your exploits out of the damn house.”

“There were no exploits! I was just-“

Before he could finish what he was saying, Pallavi walked out of the kitchen to set the dining table, and more importantly to avoid him, so she could control this confusing rage that was building up in her heart.

Raghav followed her out, “Pallavi, listen.” He grabbed her arm, and then pulled her close, “listen to me, nothing was happening, I just had to talk to her about the person who poisoned my food a couple months ago.”

Pallavi pulled away from him, “Oh, NOW I understand, that was that girl you asked me about…WHILE YOU HAD ME TIED UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET.”

Raghav walked closer, Pallavi backed away again, holding up her hand to stop him from coming closer or saying anything else, “You wanted her to tell you that, ‘yes, that evil Pallavi did help me poison Mr. Ramaswamy’s food.’ So you could kick me out of the house. Well, listen here—“

“I’m mr. Ramaswamy!” Raghav yelled.

Pallavi looked confused, “what?”

“I run the old age home, but I don’t use my name because I don’t like to bring press to the place.”

Pallavi was still confused, “what— you know what, I don’t care. Mujhe koi farak nahi padtha. I don’t care what that girl said, I didn’t poison any food, and even if you make up some bullcrap proof against me and kick me out of this house, I don’t care. Does it look like I want to live here?? But today, Amma is coming back, and we need to be mindful of her health, so shut up and keep your girlfriends out of this house today. Can you do that?”

“She isn’t my girlfriend!” Raghav yelled, “I don’t like her, I barely even know her!”

“Raghav, I know lying doesn’t make any difference to you, but I don’t tolerate lying. I said I don’t care right, you don’t need MY permission, go sleep with a hundred women for all I care, bring them up to our—I mean YOUR bedroom. But not today.”

And she went upstairs, her voice breaking with the last few words.

Right down the hallway, in the living room, was Amma and Keerthi, who had heard almost all of this outburst.

Right down the hallway, in the next room, was Amma and Keerthi, who had heard almost all of this outburst.

Amma burst into the room, with Keerthi right behind her as soon as she heard Pallavi slam an upstairs door, “Raghav, kya tum paagal ho!”

Keerthi jumped in, “Why would you do this? What is WRONG with you?”

Amma pulled Raghav close and whispered, “the biggest mistake of my life was letting that innocent girl ruin her life by marrying you, an even bigger mistake than letting you back into Keerthi and my life again. How could you do this?”

“Listen, Amma, it’s not like this.”

“It’s not like what, Raghav,” Keerthi demanded, “I know you might not like Pallavi, but no one held a gun to your head to marry her, no one can force you to do ANYTHING, so if you wanted to torture her, why did you have to marry her?”

“No, no, no, no. Listen, that girl is who poisoned my food and took that video of me on the news.”

“So why did you invite her here?” Amma asked, “Are you crazy?”

“I thought Pallavi had something to do with it, so I had to ask, because—“

“You are crazy,” Keerthi added, “How can you POSSIBLY think, Pallavi, who doesn’t even hurt the flies on the windowsill who try to get at her food, would poison you? Also that happened before she even knew you, right? Why would she?”

“No she knew me before this, I had…destroyed some of her things because she got in the way of Harish—“

“Who was following me!” Keerthi yelled, “God.”

Amma held her head in her hands, even though she wanted to slap Ragahv, she knew it would make no difference, he would never change.

“We can’t stay here Keerthi,” Amma started to say.

“What?” Pallavi came downstairs. She hadn’t heard the whole conversation, but now she was even angrier at Raghav, what did he say to Amma now?

“Amma, you said, you promised. You are just out of the hospital. Listen, if you don’t agree to live here I don’t care, I’m not sending your stuff back to your old house. The movers dropped it off this morning already, and I spent hours decorating your rooms.”

Keerthi looked at Amma. Amma glared at Raghav, she thought, if I leave now, this son of mine will destroy my beautiful and perfect bahu from the inside out. “Ok, ok, baba, you convinced me. Keerthi, go set up some of my stuff in the guest room with Pallavi, I need to talk to Raghav.”

Pallavi and Keerthi went upstairs, Pallavi avoiding Raghav’s eyes the whole conversation, and Keerthi glaring at him with so much power Raghav thought he would just burst into ashes right there.

“Raghav, if you don’t stop this crap, these women, this don-like behavior, you won’t just lose Pallavi, you will lose me and Keerthi, forever.”

Raghav, still trying to explain himself, tried to calm his anger as his mother turned and walked upstairs to her daughter and daughter-in-law.

Raghav, still trying to explain himself, tried to calm his anger as his mother turned and walked upstairs to her daughter and daughter-in-law.

“Pallavi, this room is beautiful, did you decorate your and Raghav’s room too, uski choice too bahut karaab hai’” Keerthi asked.

Pallavi was quiet, and Keerthi too realized she might have overstepped, remembering the argument she overheard downstairs.

“Meri matlab, you should redecorate the whole house, I mean it is your house now, right?” Keerthi covered.

“No, it’s not my house, Keerthi, and to be honest I don’t think it ever will be, nor do I want it—“

“What nonsense, this is your home, Pallavi,” Amma stepped in the room, “And just as you decorated these beautiful rooms for us, I expect a complete remodel of the house soon.”

Pallavi smiled, hiding her sadness, her anger, and just trying to keep calm, “Amma, let’s eat and after that you have to rest, you can’t be up on your feet so much.”

“No no, I’m fine,” Amma replied, but before she could finished, Pallavi left the room to go down to the kitchen. Raghav was still standing at the foot of the stairs, not sure what to do. As he saw Pallavi he tried to talk to her, but she rushed past him before he could say a word.

Pallavi finished setting the table, and the food, the food she had made this morning specially for Amma’s homecoming, before Raghav had found another reason for her to hang her head in shame. She wondered if eating this food would take her back to this morning, before her life had taken a turn from worse to unimaginable. Raghav sat down, and then Amma and Keerthi, both of them staring sympathetically at Pallavi and then switching to glares at Raghav.

“Akka, you sit, let me do that, you’ve already done so much these past few days.”

“No, Keerthi, I’m done, everyone dig in.” She hadn’t served to Raghav.

Raghav said, “I can take my food myself, I guess.”

“Oh, I thought you were having another protein shake.” Pallavi responded, not looking at him.

Amma and Keerthi looked at each other. Amma thought, if anyone could take her son down a few pegs, it was Pallavi.

Amma noticed Raghav piling on the bharli vangi, “Raghav, you won’t like that, that has eggplant.”

“No, I’ve had it before, Pallavi made it a few days ago, it was delicious—“

He stopped mid sentence, he didn’t know if Pallavi knew he had been secretly eating the leftovers she left in the fridge for the workers.

Pallavi looked like the comment hadn’t phased her, and Amma and Keerthi continued to look worried.

After perhaps the most awkward two hours in the Rao mansion since its construction, including that night that a homoicidal drug dealer (Ved) had tried to kill him, Pallavi got up silently and cleared the table, she took Raghav’s plate too, just so he wouldn’t find some excuse to follow her into the kitchen. She was exhausted so she left the dishes for tomorrow, and then came back out, “Amma, I think it’s best if we all go get some rest, you really need to be back in bed.”

“Pallavi, I thought we could maybe watch a movie or play a game,” Keerthi interjected.

Amma, noticing Pallavi’s dejected face said, “No, I think Pallavi’s right, I’m tired, we’ll all just go to sleep. Pallavi beta, if you could just ask Reddy to get me some coffee, or I can make it.”

“No no, Amma, I’ll make it and bring it up to your room.

In all of this conversation Raghav was silent, still sitting at the dining table, staring at the spot where his plate had just been, trying to find some way to apologize to Pallavi. If she hadn’t put the drugs in his food…it meant she probably also didn’t send those pictures of Keerthi…oh god. What had he done? How could he have ruined an innocent person’s life like this?

You are a talented person.

You wrote such a simple story which evoked so many emotions- sadness, anger, surprise, sympathy and what not.

It's such a light and heartful read.

How could he have ruined an innocent person’s life like this?

Raghav went upstairs to his room, he wanted to follow Pallavi in the kitchen, but he knew if he went in now he’d risk getting hot coffee spilled on him. He heard Pallavi bring Amma the coffee, and her steps to his room…their room. Their room. She came inside, but didn’t close the door behind her.

“Pallavi, listen to what I have to say, I didn’t mean to—“

“I’m going to sleep downstairs, in the living room,” she took a pillow from the bed, and started to turn around to leave the room.

“No, you can’t do that,” Raghav jumped in front of her, “just listen to me.”

“You can’t possibly want me to sleep here, your torture with your girlfriend today has filled your quota, do you really need to have me sleep here to torture me some more, aren’t you tired?”

Raghav sighed, sometimes he just wanted to put his hands over this Saree ke Dukaan’s mouth, just to have a moment’s silence. But, wait, today of all days she had started her gyaan again? That was weird.

“Listen, I only called Anjali over here to get the truth, I decided after you had donated blood to Amma that you couldn’t have done all the things…that I thought you had.”

Pallavi looked at him, a smile spreading over her face, “oh wow, THANK YOU Raghav Rao, my life dream has been fulfilled, being declared innocent of things I had nothing to do with by the biggest Don of India, what an honor. Do I get a prize? Also, I didn’t donate blood to you, I donated blood to your Amma, and I did it for her and Keerthi, not for you. What, do I look evil to you, like some vamp from a Hindi serial? I would donate blood to a complete stranger, in fact I have!” She rolled her eyes and tried to walk past him.

Raghav didn’t let her pass, he pulled her by her arm close to him, and threw the pillow across the room, “why does nothing stick in that stupid head of yours, I’m trying to say…”

“That you were wrong?” Pallavi added, “yes I know, but see, apologies and forgiveness are only given to people we consider our own, and neither of us consider each other…at all. So.”

Raghav sighed, his anger bubbling up again.

“Let me go, I don’t want to sleep in this room tonight, or any other night.”

Raghav searched for an excuse to stop her from leaving, “You can’t sleep downstairs, Amma wakes up in the middle of the night for water, and she wakes up really early and she could see you, or if Ready sees you tomorrow morning, for sure he will spread it around to all the workers, and then Amma will find out, and then—“

“Fine.” Pallavi grabbed the pillow from the floor, and found her spot on the left side of the bed, turning off the lamp on the side table, and ending any potential for more conversation tonight. Pallavi didn’t hear Raghav come to his side of the bed, she didn’t actually care. What a cheap and disgusting man she was married to, how could he, of all people, be related to two amazing women like Amma and Keerthi. What was wrong with him? Who hurt him in his life? She admitted to herself that perhaps he was telling the truth, and he and Anjali weren’t dating, or maybe he wasn’t trying to date her. But he still had spent all these months thinking she had poisoned his food, and instead of saying anything to her, instead of explaining who Mr. Ramaswamy was, or anything. Also how could he possibly run an old age home, don’t old people realize how evil he is? Pallavi, calm down, you’re talking to yourself, just shut up and sleep.

Raghav smiled at the ceiling in bed, he had been listening to Pallavi muttering to herself for the past few minutes now, the only words he caught were “gamandi rao” and “duffer” and “bewakoof.” He had no idea why he wanted Pallavi’s forgiveness so much, I mean as long as he didn’t blame her for things she didn’t do from now on…that would be fine right? No. He had to convince her how sorry he was tomorrow, tonight he was falling asleep to the scent of strawberries and vanilla.
