Abhay Deol slams Raanjhanaa for its regressive message, says ‘history will not look kindly at this film’

Recently, a viewer spoke about the scene where a girl is being blamed for not reciprocating the feelings the same way the man does for her. She wrote, “This scene does feel real though. Men who love the same woman, either fight over her or bond over their mutual betrayal. We have all heard and maybe even said things like ‘Her love made him a devdas’. There are so many people who face heartbreak and don’t turn self destructive. If you reject someone, why or how do you become responsible for the way they deal with that rejection? How a person deals with a heartbreak speaks less of the person who couldn’t love them back or even how deeply they felt for that person and more about what that heartbroken individual is made up of.”

Sharing the note, Abhay Deol took to Instagram to say, “Such clear and valid insight from @oldschoolrebel9 regarding the film Raanjhanaa. History will not look kindly at this film for its regressive message. It’s been a theme in Bollywood for decades, where a boy can (and should), pursue a girl until she relents. Only in cinema does she do that willfully. In reality we have seen time and again that it leads to sexual violence of some sort. Glorifying it on screen only leads to blaming the victim, as @oldschoolrebel9 explains it so brilliantly. Please do take time out to read her observations in the pics above. #shedoesnotlikeyou #growup #gloryfyingsexualharrasment.”

Directed by Aanand L Rai, Raanjhanaa released back in 2013.

It's shameful how these failed persons are blaming their failures on literally anything and everything under the sun using a dead person as shield...shameless 🤢👎🏼

Why he signed movie if he had problems? No one force him to sign it on gun point , no matter he did it fr money or recognizition or any mazboori it's still not done to mock it later. Basic professional ethics. Seeing all this nautanki somehow I feel we r getting too harsh on Alia, some outsiders dont deserve that we stand up for them

He is such a great guy. Very few will have the ability to criticize themselves. The way he is not just accepting criticism, but also giving voice to those criticizing them because he found those opinions to be valid.

BW and its fanatics will hate on him for it. But then that's how it always is with people who stand up for what they believe in. Kudos to him!

Why history? Everyone had the same views when the movie released. It was regressive at that time itself.

I love how he reflects back on his work and isn’t afraid to criticize himself in public. He’s been doing that often. Very few are self aware. Refreshing, really

Is this a late realization? Was he not aware of the content at the time he signed on? Or was he not as aware of what it was as he's now. Abhay has always been selective in what he chooses to do so can't imagine him signing on to be in something he fully wasn't on board with. Anna Vetticaad had done a whole interview with Sonam after the release of Raanjhanaa if I'm not wrong where Sonam defended what the film portrayed as she felt Zoya didn't mind Kundan's antics. Makes you wonder if she too feels differently now about it. Makes you wonder about how many of these people sign on to something they don't even believe in yet do it. Makes you wonder if this realization is the result of being more aware now or if it's something that he always thought was the case yet went ahead and did the movie. And this is coming from someone who likes Abhay but this take is interesting for a lack of a better word because it makes you question his own past choices to some degree. And if he made the choices he did despite not fully being on board with the content of the script.
