Of course it was regressive but unfortunately this is a far too commonly portrayed scenario in Indian cinema. A girl's 'No' and lack of interest will eventually become 'Yes' - the hero just has to relentlessly pursue her /stalk her till he wears her down or till she realises his heart of gold, inner worth, heroism etc etc.
Question is, why did Abhay Deol act in it if he felt it was regressive?
He said same thing for Aisha. Is he good terms with Sonam?
Moral of the story: No matter how hard Kundan tried, he never got Zoya. So movie itself said, "stalking and hounding a girl, will never get you a girl".
Now it is not movie's mistake if people don't get the message.
Abhay Deol must be the one of the few rare cases of being both talented and an insider yet he failing

He lacks the biggest talent to survive in showbiz, people skill and making loyal friends.
He is kinda like Akshay Khanna, just less talented.
Ranjhana was so regressive. But dhanush potrayed kundan so so well, that many people overlooked the problem with the story.
But man, dhanush, and that last 5 min scene with those dialogues, makes me weep every time.
Abhay is a weirdo 😆
The movie had the same message conveyed that stalking and forcing a girl will not help you in anything.
I found the movie to be about penance for the grave mistakes you did.
Both Sonam and Dhanush characters did commit errors that resulted in the death of Abhay deols character. Both in the end, suffer and finally do their bit to forgive themselves.
While Sonam holds Dhanush responsible and kills him in the end. Dhanush repents by accepting this hatred and genuinely seeks forgiveness by accepting his death without hate.
That was the underlying message. Unfortunately, Bollywood made it only about love as always. I don't even see Raanjhana as a love story, it was the journey of Sonam and Dhanush about repentance of their errors which led to a death and destruction of lives.

It's shameful how these failed persons are blaming their failures on literally anything and everything under the sun using a dead person as shield...shameless 🤢👎🏼
Why he signed movie if he had problems? No one force him to sign it on gun point , no matter he did it fr money or recognizition or any mazboori it's still not done to mock it later. Basic professional ethics. Seeing all this nautanki somehow I feel we r getting too harsh on Alia, some outsiders dont deserve that we stand up for them
What outsider?
He’s Bobby deols cousin
