Happy Birthday #Gulzar Saab,
Aap nahi hote toh rishton ki barikiyon ko kaun samjhata,
Aap nahi hote toh mere sare ehsaas ko labzz kaun deta,
Aap nahi hote toh hindi ke prati mera pyaar kaun jagata,
Aur, Aap nahi hote toh mujhe , mujhse kaun milata.

Gulzar Sahab was born as Sampooran Singh Kalra on August 18, 1934. Though a genius lyricist and poet, that was never his only passion.

After assisting great filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Bimal Roy, under whom he sharpened his skills of story-writing and direction, Gulzar Sahab moved on to make some movies of his own. All his movies had a strong connect with the audience, courtesy the stories he wrote -- all of them revolved around some raging social issue relevant to that period of time.

Today, on his 82nd birthday, SpotboyE.com takes a look at his most classic movies. Check them out:

Maachis (1996)

Starring Tabu, Chandrachur Singh, Jimmy Shergill and others, this movie conveyed the message that the youth of the nation are like matchsticks that can be ignited easily by political and police oppression. It was set around the Sikh insurgency in Punjab in the 1980s. The movie was a critical as well as commercial success.

Angoor (1982)

Starring Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Varma in the lead roles, this film was based on Shakespeare's famous play Comedy Of Errors. Two sets of identical twin brothers get separated in their childhood and when they meet in awkward instances as adults, it makes for a super-hilarious plot. The movie was praised by the critics and loved by the audiences as well.

Kinara (1977)

The film, starring Jeetendra, Hema Malini and Dharmendra, revolved around the entangled relationship between the three leads. Jeetendra shifts from a big city to a small town following a road accident. There, he meets Hema and falls in love with her. Later, he gets to know that Hema's lover Dharmendra had passed away in the same car accident. The movie won some great reviews, but turned out to be an average grosser at the ticket windows.

Aandhi (1975)

Starring Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen in the lead roles, this story was way ahead of its times. It revolved around a divorced couple who meet after years, in the midst of an election campaign. The film was banned in India by the then government as it was said to be loosely based on the life of Indira Gandhi.

Mausam (1975)

Starring Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore, this movie was based on the high-handedness of the rich people. Sanjeev, a big city guy, falls in love with a local girl Sharmila while preparing for his medical exams in Darjeeling. He leaves soon after the exams, promising to return. However, by the time he returns 25 years later, Sharmila is no more. Her daughter is in a brothel, and it's upon Sanjeev to bring her back to normal life, thereby making good of his past mistake. The film was widely appreciated because of its niche content and brilliant performances.

Parichay (1972)

Starring Jeetendra and Jaya Bhaduri in the lead roles, this film is based on how a simple school teacher transforms the lives of a few kids, who have been spoilt because of their father's estranged relationship with their wealthy grandfather. After the father passes away, the grandfather brings them to stay with him and tries to make amends for the way he treated his son. The simple storyline connected well with the masses and made this film a blockbuster.

Koshish (1972)

Starring Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri, this film depicts the beautiful relationship between a differently abled couple. The film makes you believe that despite all the troubles, there is always a way to find happiness in life.
