Review

Sundays were ruled by ARY thanks to "Mera Saaein", and when that great drama ended, everyone looked forward to the next offering "Umm-e-Kulsoom". Another one of A&B Production this one was actually shot quite a while back and took longer making it to the screen.

I had written an article after watching two episodes of this drama stating it is a mistake, and received some negative marks for it from our readers. Here today, I review the drama for you .

Story : This is the story of a middle class girl Umm-e-Kulsoom(Amina Sheikh), and her transition from a simple religious girl to a glamorous, rich and famous singer. It shows the troubles she has to face thanks to her bhabhi who gets her married to a mental patient for the sake of money. Ultimately, she gets married to the rich spoilt brat Nihal(Faisal Qureshi), and her life takes a complete new turn.

The story just fails to impress. It simply has no potential and walks the "I know what's next…" path. The sad part is the fact that the same Production House has another drama "Pul Sirat" on the same channel with the same storyline. Poor timing too in this case.

There are no twists in the story. I fail to understand what the Producers saw in the script to okay it at first place ? This one written by Sarwat Nazir fails.

Technicalities : Directed by Babar Javed, this one does not have his stamp. The drama lacks the sensitvity and depth that most of his dramas possess, and are famous for. He couldn't really be blamed as script is the real culprit here, and Babar actually tries to keep this sinking ship floating, thanks to his expertise. The camera work is good but the drama carries the old look(reasoned above).

The editing is good and the background music weak. OST fails to leave any mark. The dialogues are not new, and we have heard them far too often. Specially the dialogues given to Umm-e-Kulsoom are of repetitive nature. The wardrobe and make up is good to poor.

Characters :

Umm-e-Kulsoom : A middle class girl who gives qurbaani for her family at different stages. She is religious, and famous for her beautiful voice(as she is into recitation). Her second husband Nihal is a playboy and she has to deal with him strongly, and she ultimately becomes another person.

Umm-e-Kulsoom is good as a sister or daughter, but fails totally as a wife. The character is weak from that angle with no growth happening at all. One fails to feel for her.

Nihal : He is the rich spoilt brat who is into drinking, and women. All he is fond of is "beautiful woman" and married Umm-e-Kulsoom only because of her beauty, and then tries to change her according to his needs.

He is our typical flamboyant hero, and the character has no other side to it .

Moosa : Umm-e-Kulsoom's former fiance who is handicapped after an accident, but is not able to get over his former love. He is our typical loser. We have seen such characters far too many times to feel bad now.

Ruqqaiya : Umm-e-Kulsoom's sister who is jealous of her, and is in love with Moosa, who is Umm-e-Kulsoom's former fiance. She tries to create problems for her sister, and does all she can to get her lover, ultimately realizing her mistakes.

This is one of the good characters with some gray shades.

Acting : Amina Sheikh in the lead role is good. She emotes really well, and her dialogue delivery is perfect. She is one of the best female actors we have in our industry today. My problem ? Her Quran recitiation is poor. The Production House should've had gotten someone else for that.

Faysal Qureshi looks disinterested in the project. We have seen him doing better.Period.Sami Khan also looks weak in his poorly written character. Hassan Ahmad looks bad, and irritates.Urooj Fatima is efficient in her role. Neelum Muneer has done better. Jahan Ara Haye is her normal self, nothing new.Rest of the cast is good.

Over All: One of the weakest dramas by the production house, and everyone agrees to that. Watch this one only if you have nothing better to do.
