The 13th of August marked the birthdays of two of the most beautiful actresses Bollywood has produced: Sridevi Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala Bali.
Sridevi,
born in Sivakasi Tamil Nadu in August 13, 1963, started her career as a
child artist in M. A. Thirumugham's devotional movie, Thunaivan,
at the tender age of 4. She continued to act in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada
and Malayalam movies, with her Malayalam performance in Poombatta (1971) winning her the Kerela State Award for Best Child Artist. She made her Bollywood debut with Julie (1975) but Solva Savan (1979) gave her first lead role. Movies such as Himmatwala and Tohfa quickly established her as a top Bollywood actress whilst films such as Sadma brought her critical acclaim. Over the years, she rapidly proved her versatility as an actress by playing an icchadari nagin in Nagina, a goofy reporter in Mr India, the immortalized Chandni and the double roles in Lamhe and Khuda Gawah effortlessly. Playing the greedy housewife to perfection in Judaai, she took a hiatus of fifteen years and made a heart-warming comeback with English Vinglish in 2012. Sridevi also made her debut on the small screen with Malini Iyyer and also made special appearances in Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai and Kaboom. She has won four Filmfare Awards for Best Actress and one Filmfare Special Award for Nagina and Mr India.
She also received the prestigious Padma Shri in 2013. Sridevi is
married to the successful producer Boney Kapoor and is the mother of two
beautiful daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.
Vyjayanthimala,
born on August 13, 1936, was born in Triplicane into an orthodox
Brahmin family. She was the first South Indian actress to become a
national star, just being thirteen when her first movie, Vazhkai, released in 1949. It enjoyed a great success at the box office and was later dubbed in Telugu and remade in Hindi as Bahar. She has lent her acting skills in other multilingual films such as Penn (Tamil), Sangham (Telugu) and Ladki (Hindi) as well. She has also acted in magnum opus movies such as the tragic Devdas and the highly successful, Nagin. Vyjayanthimala has
won many accolades during her reign at Bllywood, four of them being
Filmfare Awards as well as the Padma Shri in 1968. She entered politics
in 1984 and has been part of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. She is
an esteemed Bharatnatyam dancer and continued with dancing even after
leaving her acting career in 1970. She was conferred with the Sangeet
Natak Akademi Award, the highest recognition for practicing artists and
is interestingly one of oldest golfers in Chennai.
