Chapter Four

“Hadh hoti hai, Armaan!” Madhav cried, exasperated. “Tu aise kaise kisi ko bhi chod aaya Abhira ke saath?”

“Papa, aap itni tension mat lijiye. Mishti Ma'am aur Abir Sir bohot achche hain. Abhira unke saath bilkul safe rahegi,” Armaan assured.

“Kitne bhi achche ho, beta,” Vidya said. “Hain toh ajnabee hi. Hum kaise unpe trust kar sakte hain? Abhira ka dhyaan toh humein hi rakhna padega na?”

“Pch… Aap log khud chaliye. Wahaan jaake dekh lena. Woh bilkul theek hogi. Aap dono toh aise behave kar rahe hain jaise mujhe uski koi chinta hi nahi hai,” Armaan argued.

“Haan, Madhav Ji… Hum bhi chalke dekhte hain,” Vidya agreed. The trio walked into the outhouse and immediately, Armaan called for Abhira. When she didn't reply, he got a little suspicious. He checked his watch and sure enough, it was almost 9am. Abhira was usually dressed and ready for the day by then. “Abhira,” he called once again, to be met with more silence.

“Dekha… Main keh raha tha. Lekin tu toh meri sunta hi nahi hai!” Madhav taunted.

“Aap usse baad mein suna dena, Madhav Ji. Abhi pehle Abhira ko dekhte hain,” Vidya interrupted. Nodding, Armaan knocked on Abhira's door. When she didn't open it, he turned the knob to an empty room. Truly worried now, he turned to the guest room and opened the door, without bothering with any courtesies, and was greeted by a surprising sight. Madhav and Vidya entered behind him, just as shocked as he was. There, lying on the bed, was Abhira. Her head was pillowed on Mishti's lap, who was sitting against the headboard, her own head on Abir's shoulder. Abir was resting his head on Mishti's head, his fingers tangled carelessly into Abhira's hair. All three of them were sleeping soundly, unaware of the world around them.

“Abhira!” Armaan called, but she didn't wake. Instead, she snuggled further into Mishti's lap, away from the noise. “Abhira!” Armaan called again, a little louder this time. “Utho. Iraaaaa!”

It was Abir who woke then. He was a little disoriented for a moment, rubbing sleep out of his eyes. “Kaun?” He asked out loud, before his gaze fell on Armaan and his parents. “Oh, Armaan,” he smiled. “Good morning.”

“Good morning, Sir,” Armaan replied. “All okay? Aap sab iss tarah…” He gestured to Mishti and Abhira who were still sleeping. Mishti's head was lolling to the side and she would have fallen on the bed, had it not been for Abir quickly putting his palm under her neck to support her.

“It's all good,” Abir assured Armaan. “Better than good, actually. Just… One moment. Aap zara living room mein wait karenge? Main abhi aaya!”

Vidya tried to argue, but Armaan pulled her outside along with Madhav. “Armaan! Kya kar raha hai? Wahaan se kyun le aaya humein?” Vidya questioned.

“Maa, Sir ne kaha na woh aa rahe hain toh hum wahaan kya karte?” Armaan responded. “Udhar hi khade rehte kya? Kitna awkward feel ho raha tha waise hi!”

“Awkward feel ho raha tha toh kya hua?” Madhav asked. “Wahaan Abhira bhi toh thi na… Aur woh teeno aise… Kuch hua hoga kya? Abhira unke paas soyi hui thi. Uske paas toh baithna chahiye tha. Usse humaari zaroorat hoti toh?”

“I know, Papa… Ajeeb toh mujhe bhi laga,” Armaan agreed. “Lekin abhi Sir aayenge toh hum pooch lenge na.”

Just then, Abir walked out with both Mishti and Abhira in tow. “Sorry, sorry, sorry,” he apologized. “Kal raat ko baat karte karte kab aankh lag gayi pata hi nahi chala.”

Not paying any attention to Abir, Armaan reached out to Abhira, pulling her into his side. “Kya hua? Tum theek ho na?”

“Khadoosmaan, main theek nahi, main bilkul amazing hoon,” Abhira assured him, wrapping her arms around him in a hug. “Aaj ka din meri life ka sabse best din hai!”

“Abhira, beta… Tu sach mein theek haina?” Madhav pressed.

Looking up from her perch on Armaan's chest, Abhira grinned widely. “Haan, Papa. Main sach mein bilkul bilkul theek hoon. Aur koi gadbad nahi hai. In fact, ab toh sab kuch bilkul sahi ho jaayega. Ekdum perfect.”

“Picture perfect,” Abir and Mishti echoed. Abhira turned to them and grinned so wide, the sun paled in comparison. Without warning, she moved out of Armaan's arms into Abir's.

“Armaan, inse milo,” she said, hugging Abir tight.

“Sir se kya milna hai, Abhira?” Armaan cut her off. “Main jaanta hoon inhe.”

“Khadoosmaan, ab yeh Sir wali aadat sach mein chodni padegi,” Abir laughed.

“Toh abse toh Uncle hi bulaunga,” Armaan harrumphed.

“Uncle nahi,” Abhira ordered. “Tum unhe Bade Papa bulaoge, jaise main bulaati hoon.” To Abir, she said, “Aur aap usse Khasoosmaan bolna band kijiye. Usse iss naam se sirf main bula sakti hoon.”

“Okay, okay. Sorry, Heera!” Abir apologized, holding his ears. “No more Khadoosmaan. Jamai Sa kaisa rahega? Better?”

“Bade Papa!” Abhira cried, whacking his chest. “Aap kyun mujhe ched rahe ho?”

“Tujhe nahi chedenge toh aur kise chedenge, meri pyaari si gudiya rani,” Mishti asked, hugging her from the other side. “Itna toh haq banta haina humaara?”

“Badi Maa…” Abhira sighed. “Saara haq toh aapka hi banta hai. Mumma aur Papa ki jagah ab… Aap dono hi hona. Aur kaun hai?”

Mishti pulled Abhira into her arms, kissing her forehead. “Aur bohot log hain, Abhira. Tu apne-aap ko akela mat samajh. Sirf hum dono nahi, poora parivaar tera hai, beta. I promise.”

“Ji… Maaf kijiyega. Humne aapko pehchaana nahi,” Madhav interrupted, wanting to understand the situation better. Armaan had said he'd left Abhira with his clients. But the couple before him were definitely more than clients. He just needed to know who they were.

“Yehi toh main batane ki koshish kar rahi hoon, Papa,” Abhira whined. “Lekin mujhe koi bolne hi nahi de raha. Yeh hain Abir Rajvansh aur yeh hain Mishti Agarwal Rajvansh. Yeh mere Badi Maa aur Bade Papa hain!”

“Badi Maa aur Bade Papa?” Vidya echoed, confused.

“Ji,” Mishti answered. “Abhira ki Mumma… Akshara Sharma… She's my niece.”

“Aa— aap… Ma'am ki… Aap ma'am ki family hain?” Armaan asked, shocked. Mishti nodded. “Haan. Hum Akshu ki family hain… Aur Abhira ki bhi.”

Armaan snorted at that. He took Abhira's hand and pulled her to him, away from Mishti. “Aap uski family nahi hain. Main hoon uski family.”

“Armaan, yeh tum kya bol rahe ho? Tum Badi Maa se aise baat kaise kar sakte ho?” Abhira argued.

“Sahi keh raha hoon main, Abhira,” Armaan answered. “Jab Ma'am ko inki zaroorat thi, tab toh yeh wahaan nahi the. Ma'am se baat karna bhi theek nahi samjha. Arre, wahaan ma'am apne aakhri palon mein apne parivaar ko yaad kar rahi thi, unse ek baar baat karna chaahti thi. Lekin inhone kya kiya? Phone cut kar diya. Ek baar unse baat karne ka bhi mann nahi hua kya inka? Itne saalon baad ma'am ne phone kiya phir bhi.”

“Kya… Kais— kaisa phone? Kab?” Mishti whispered, aghast. Turning to Abir, she asked, “Abir… Kya Akshu ka phone aaya tha? Tumne mujhe bataya bhi nahi?”

“Akshu ka koi phone nahi aaya tha, Mishti,” Abir replied. “Main tumse itni badi baat chupaata kya? Aur… Main? Akshu ka phone kaat deta? Arre, aaj bhi jab phone bajta haina, mera pehla khayal yeh hota hai ki kaash iss baar Akshu ka phone ho. Main kaise uska phone…”

“Aapko phone nahi kiya tha, Bade Papa,” Abhira stated. “Unhone Udaipur ke number pe phone kiya tha, Rajkot nahi.”

Turning to Armaan, she added, “Armaan, tum galat samajh rahe ho. Badi Maa aur Bade Papa toh itne saalon se Mumma aur mujhe dhoond rahe hain. Woh hum dono se bohot pyaar karte hain. Unhone Mumma ko akela nahi choda. Woh toh koi aur tha.”

Armaan looked like he wanted to argue, but stepped back at Abhira's earnest expression. He knew just how much Abhira craved a family. He would never deprive her of one. It didn't mean that he was ready to blindly accept Mishti and Abir into his fold, but he would keep quiet for now. If they did anything to upset Abhira, that's when he'd speak up. If not, well, no one would be happier than him that Abhira had found a family.

“Aapse milke bohot achcha laga,” Vidya said. “Main, Vidya Poddar. Armaan ki maa.”

“Maa? Sach? Ho hi nahi sakta! Aap toh uski badi behen lagti hain,” Abir replied, making Vidya blush.

“Samdhi Sa, aap yeh kya keh rahe hain?” Vidya fumbled. “Aisa kuch nahi hai.”

“Nahi, Maa,” Abhira argued. “Bade Papa sahi keh rahe hain. Aap abhi bhi itni young aur happening hi lagti hain!”

“Chup kar tu,” Vidya scolded her. “Main Armaan ki Maa ki tarah hi lagti hoon.”

“Par… Main toh lagta hoon na, uska bada bhai?” Madhav asked.

“Bhai?” Armaan laughed. “Aap mere Dadaji lagte ho!”

“Oyye, Mr. Khadoosmaan Dadaji, tum mere Papa se kuch mat kaho,” Abhira stepped in. “Woh kitne zyada young lagte hain.”

“Haan, tum toh thehri Papa ki Pari,” Armaan replied. “Tumhe toh woh hi sahi lagenge na!”

“Tum dono phir shuru ho gaye?” Vidya grumbled. “Jab dekho bas ladaayi karna aata hai dono ko. Chup karo ab!”

“Sorry, Maa!” They chorussed, looking down like little kids getting a scolding from their parent.

“Ab yeh sab nautanki band karo. Chalo, Abhira. Hum tumhaare saath naashta karne aaye hain,” Madhav stated. “Itne din ho gaye humne tumhaare saath breakfast nahi kiya. Toh maine socha aaj toh main apni beti ke saath hi khaunga.”

“Sorry, Papa. Aaj toh itna late ho gaya. Ab tak toh kuch bana bhi nahi hai,” Abhira apologized.

“Abhira, tu tension mat le,” Mishti assured. “Aap sab baithke baatein karo. Aaj meri gudiya rani ke liye main naashta banaungi.”

“Nahi, nahi. Aap kaise?” Vidya contradicted. “Aap baithiye… Main banaati hoon.”

“Vidya Ji, ghar ki hi baat hai. Aur… Mujhe kabhi mauka bhi toh nahi mila… Abhira ke liye kuch banane ka. Main kar lungi,” Mishti replied. When she put it like that, no one could argue.

“Badi Maa, main help kar deti hoon,” Abhira started to follow her, but was stopped. “Tu kuch nahi karegi,” Mishti ordered. “Bas yahaan baithegi. Yeh itna lamba-chauda Ajeeb Rajvansh maine kis liye rakha hai? Woh kar dega meri help!”

“Angry Chorniiiiiiiii,” Abir whined, but nevertheless, followed her into the kitchen, leaving the Poddar family laughing.

Abhira understood very well what Mishti was trying to do. Yes, she probably did want to cook for Abhira, but mostly, she was giving Abhira some alone time with Armaan and his parents so that she could talk to them about this recent development in her life. No matter how good their intentions were, it was understandable that Armaan would have some doubts about the Rajvanshes. It was better to nip it all in the bud so that these things didn't turn into big issues.

“Armaan,” Abhira started, once they were gone. “Tum please kuch galat mat socho. I promise you, Badi Maa aur Bade Papa ke intentions bilkul bure nahi hai.”

“Haan, aur tum bada samajh gayi ho unhe ek raat mein!” Armaan scoffed. “Ira, tum bohot achchi ho, isliye tumhe baaki sab mein bhi sirf achchai hi dikhti hai. Lekin saari duniya tumhaari tarah nahi hoti.”

“Aisa nahi hai,” Abhira argued. “Woh sach mein Mumma ko dhoond rahe the. Uss waqt circumstances were out of their control. Agar unhe pata hota toh woh Mumma ko kabhi akela nahi padne dete.”

“Tum itni confident kaise ho sakti ho?” Armaan wondered. “Abhira, iss tarah tumhaara unpe blind trust karna mujhe theek nahi lag raha hai.”

“Armaan theek keh raha hai, beta,” Madhav added softly. “Ho sakta hai woh achche log hain, lekin unhe parkhe bina aise faisla le lena… Isme tumhaara hi dil dukhega.”

“Aap sab samajh kyun nahi rahe hain?” Abhira questioned, getting frustrated. “Woh mera dil nahi todenge! Aap sabne nahi dekha kaise kal raat bhar Badi Maa nahi so paayi kyunki unhe sirf Mumma ki chinta ho rahi thi, unhone kaise react kiya jab unn dono ko pata chala ki Mumma ab humaare beech nahi rahi.”

To Armaan, she said, “Aur tum bhi toh kal the na yahaan? Tumne nahi dekha woh mujhse kaise mile? Armaan… Jo sukoon mujhe Badi Maa aur Bade Papa ke gale lagke mila, woh Mumma ke alawa aur kisi ke paas nahi mila.”

“Abhira,” Armaan whispered, painful. He pulled her into his arms, not caring about his parents sitting right beside them. “Tumhaare emotions main samajhta hoon. Lekin mujhe darr lagta hai. Main nahi chaahta ki koi tumhe hurt kare.”

“Sirf emotions ki baat nahi hai, Armaan,” Abhira promised. “They showed me proof. Bade Papa ne mujhe dikhaya unhone kahaan-kahaan humein dhoonda. Missing posters, police reports, newspaper articles. In fact, unhone toh ek private investigator bhi hire kiya tha. Badi Maa ne mujhe unka poora email chain kholke diya. Tum jaante ho… Woh pichle 15 saalon se iss ek investigator ke saath touch mein hain. Kuch clue naa milne par bhi unhone umeed nahi chodhi aur pata nahi kitne hi paise kharch kar diye uss investigator ke peeche!

They've genuinely tried. Woh uss waqt jab Mumma ko ghar chodna pada tha… Badi Maa aur Bade Papa ke ghar bhi kisi death ho gayi thi. Toh jab tak woh wahaan dhyaan de rahe the, peeche se Mumma chali gayi. Unhe toh pata hi nahi chala. Jis din se unhe pata chala tabse leke aaj tak woh humein dhoond rahe hain.

They're not bad people. Aap log please unke baare mein kuch bura mat sochiye. Woh mere Badi Maa aur Bade Papa hain. They love me. Aur mujhe hai unpe bharosa. Woh mera dil nahi todenge!”

“Agar unhone sach mein itna sab kiya hai toh phir ek mauka dena toh banta hai, Armaan,” Madhav stated. Sighing, Armaan nodded. Indeed, if they'd been looking for Abhira and Akshara Ma'am for years, they deserved a chance. He couldn't argue with that. It wasn't that he was blind. Abir and Mishti's love for Abhira was so palpable even in the five minutes Armaan had spent in their presence this morning. But, he was afraid to hope. Too many people had hurt Abhira too many times, himself included. Trust didn't come easily to him, especially when Abhira's happiness was on the line. Still, he would genuinely try. For her. Because Abhira deserved his 100% in everything. He had already failed her countless times in the past. He wouldn't make the same mistake again, even if it was the last thing he ever did.
