Engeyum Kadhal - More music, less love
IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 06, 2011]
Love is the only sane and satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence, they say. No one can understand this better than choreographer-actor-director Prabhu Deva, for reasons which are obvious.

So expectations were high on 'Engeyum Kadhal', his directorial venture. Though romance reigns supreme in this film, lack of enough care in the script and narration mar the flow. But hold on! Harris Jayaraj's music, Nirav Shah's cinematography and the crackling chemistry of 'Jayam' Ravi-Hansika Motwani set things right to a decent extent.

From Laila-Majnu to Karthik-Jessy, romance has been celebrated in various ways on screen. 'Engeyum Kadhal' follows this formula, and who knows, it may strike the right chord in today's youngsters, who vote for candyfloss stories.

Unlike earlier Prabhu Deva films that were more noisy, 'Engeyum Kadhal' is rather quite, sedate to start with. The movie is more like a gentle breeze touching your face on a cool evening.

It is a tale of a suave, rich and a successful young business man Kamal ('Jayam' Ravi) who wants to break all hectic shackles around him to go on a vacation to Paris, the capital city of France.

It's boy meeting girl story here. Destiny brings Kayal (Hansika Motwani), a Indian girl brought up in France in his life. Rajasekhar (Suman), Kayal's father runs a detective agency.

She is shocked when she comes to know from reading his father's case that a client (Sonu) is currently behind Kamal, only to kill him. Kayal decides to save Kamal's life. The saviour act turns as love between them.

Kamal leaves France and Kayal is shattered. After almost a year, they meet again and things take a turn.

'Jayam' Ravi is impressive. He plays his part extremely well and seems to have got under the skin to deliver his best. Especially as a stylish entrepreneur, he fits the bill well. Hansika, the bubbly, girl is awesome. Her presence itself is a big plus, not to forget her performance. Suman and Raju Sundaram play their part well.

If Prabhu Deva is the heart for 'Engeyum Kadhal', Harris Jayaraj is its soul. His mesmerising tunes catches admiration of one and all. Nirav Shah's lens captures the Paris at its pristine glory.

There is no surprise more magical than the surprise of being loved. It is God's finger on man's shoulder. Perhaps the movie ends proving this point. Go fall in love with 'Engeyum Kadhal'.

How far can you go to achieve your love? This is the basic crux of Prabhu Deva's Engeyum Kaadhal, which has Jayam Ravi and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles. Romance is one genre that never fails in Tamil Cinema and it has been a while since we came across a full fledged romantic entertainer. This film has been making headlines ever since its launch, first for its title and then for the mesmerizing music by Harris Jayaraj, which is already topping the charts. The film is produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram, Kalpathi S. Ganesh and Kalpathi S. Suresh under AGS Entertainment banner. Sun Pictures has acquired the release rights of the film.

Who is in it?

Interestingly the film doesn't have too many characters. Engeyum Kaadhal mainly revolves around the lead pair Jayam Ravi and Hansika Motwani. The film is about a hard working, stylish young industrialist Kamal (Jayam Ravi) who goes on a month's vacation to Paris every year.

Then we have the bubbly Kayal (Hansika), a Indian girl brought up in France and finally, we have Kayal's father Rajasekhar (Suman) who runs a detective agency.

THE PLOT

Kamal, a young billionaire, doesn't believe in love; his philosophy is simple: No love, no commitments = No disappointments. He works hard for 11 months and takes a month's break from all the work related commitments. Cute violinist Kayalvizhi alias Kayal believes in true love and is highly fascinated with Indian culture. Kayal's father Rajasekhar runs a small detective agency in France and Kayal often reads her father's case files for interesting stories.

One day, Rajasekhar gets a new client (Sonu Gates) who wants to know about his girlfriend's mystery man. After a brief investigation, Rajasekhar finds that his client's girl friend is currently dating Kamal. Sonu gets angry and decides to kill his girlfriend and Kamal. Kayal overhears the conversation and deciding to save them, rushes to their hotel. There she bumps into Kamal and it's love at first sight for her. After a few initial encounters, Kayal learns that Kamal doesn't believe in love but she still tries to impress him. After a month, Kamal leaves France and Kayal is heartbroken.

Days pass by. After almost an year, they meet again in Paris. But this time, Kayal has new plans for Kamal! Watch out for Engeyum Kaadhal for more!

Caution: A dramatic climax awaits you!

THE PERFORMANCE

Jayam Ravi has lost weight and looks stylish on screen. Known for his chocolate boy image, he excels in this romantic entertainer. Engeyum Kaadhal is definitely his cup of tea. Hansika Motwani is perfect for the role; however, she has to learn the language to get the lip sync right. Kudos to her dubbing artist for delivering the dialogues perfectly. Suman as Hansika's father is perfect on screen and as usual, his experience speaks. Raju Sundaram successfully provides the much-needed comedy factor. His slapstick comedy act in some scenes is hilarious. Prakashraj appear in a blink-and-miss cameo which is an unwanted intrusion.

THE TECHNIQUES

First, Engeyum Kaadhal breaks the regular jinx of a boy falling for the girl. In this film, it is the other way round. Right from the start of the film, Prabhu Deva assured his fans this would be a feel-good entertainer and he delivers. A perfect first half, an emotional second half with a dramatic climax, that is Engeyum Kaadhal for you. Cinematographer Nirav Shah is the true star of this film; his lens has captured the true beauty of Paris perfectly. Anthony's sleek editing and Nagu's perfect art works need special mention. Harris Jayaraj's music, which is already topping the charts, has been picturised well. However, certain tunes reminds us some of his earlier compositions. Kudos to the costume designer for the brilliant colour combinations (especially for Hansika).

THE VERDICT

Overall, Prabhu Deva's Engeyum Kaadhal is a cool breezy entertainer perfect for this hot summer. It's love every where!

Thanks for the review...

i watched the movie in theaters... must say i enjoyed it... after a long time, thr's a simple breezy feel gd romcom entertainer...

nothing great or novel abt the story, only diff this time they took the girls perspective..

but to fully enjoy the movie, u gotta watch it in theaters, its a visual n verbal treat, music n cinematography, the locations n songs looks ravishing and the songs are already chartbusters...

hansika & jayam ravi were gd in their respective roles and ravi looks a million bucks in the film...

the only neg abt the film, there's nothing groundbreaking abt the script, especially since the last releases in tamil were Ko n vaanam which had gd climax n screenplay... n another neg part was raju sundaram, u have no idea why he's in the film and he's comedy is just a waste, nothing funny n honestly he shd stick to just dancing, lacks the expressions or acting abilities esp for a comic relief role...

watch it if your up for a simple entertainer
