Starvation diets donot help. In fact you put on weight when you start eating. Cutting down on fat and foods with high carb content is great.
Sensible eating and exercise (even if its walking) helps.
Above all, donot think in terms of "diet". Think in terms of eating healthy and if possible have a partner to join you.

Very well said. Also if some wants to loose weight, just try drinking lot of water 1.5 liters first thing in the morning give one hour break and then drink your morning tea/coffee/milk or breakfast. Eat healthy. Stay healthy and exercise.
