Is Alia Bhatt's Jigra a remake of the Sridevi, Sanjay Dutt 1993 movie Gumrah?

Yesterday, the teaser-trailer of Jigra was out. Everyone is floored seeing the intensity, action and vibe of the movie starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina. It is directed by Vasan Bala of Chor Nikal Ke Bhaaga and Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota fame. The movie shows Vedang Raina as a young man who is locked up in what seems like a Far East nation. Alia Bhatt only has her brother as family in her life. Desperate, she decides to break into the prison to rescue him. The teaser-trailer got a fab response. Vedang Raina’s rendition of Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka Sabka Kehna Hai is winning over social media. 

It seems Jigra is an adaptation of the 1993 movie Gumrah. It was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Gumrah was also from the stable of Dharma Movies. In the film, Sridevi gets arrested in Hong Kong on charges of trafficking cocaine. While a lawyer tries to secure her release, she is quickly given the death sentence. How Jaggu (Sanjay Dutt) a petty thief helps her escape from the prison is what the story is all about. It also has a plot of a daughter trying to find her father. In Jigra, Alia Bhatt too finds support from someone as she tries to save her brother. A leading entertainment portal has reported that the making of Jigra from Ghulam is similar to what Dharma did with the Agneepath movies. 

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Securing the rights of Gumrah wasn’t a problem. After all, it was produced by Dharma Productions, who have also produced Jigra. The scenario reminds one of Dharma Productions’ Agneepath (1990) which was remade by Karan Johar in 2012 with Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt in the leading roles.” 

Bad Newzz, Mr and Mrs Mahi were the movies from Dharma in 2024. Both of them did not fare well at the box office. Jigra has got a good response from people. Alia Bhatt is being loved in the role of the sister who will even dare to break down the walls of a prison to help her brother escape.
