Has Punjab's water been taken away from the state unconstitutionally?

There is an International law to establish the ownership of river water. i.e. RIPARIAN RIGHTS OR RIPARIAN LAW.

Riparian water rights (or simply riparian rights) is a system for allocating water among those who possess land along its path. It has its origins in English common law. Riparian water rights exist in many jurisdictions with a common law heritage, such as Canada, Australia, and states in the eastern United States.

Punjab has three rivers flowing in the state- Satluj, Beas and Ravi. Punjab possesses the land alongside these rivers, therefore, according to Riparian Law, only Punjab has the ownership on these rivers.

If Haryana says that it was part of joint Punjab, so it has the right over these rivers and Punjab should share water with Haryana. If we consider that Haryana is right then Yamuna river was also part of joint Punjab and Punjab also has right to have the waters from Yamuna.

Riparian Law is only authentic law for establishing ownership of river waters and hence it is unconstitutional to take away the water from Punjab. Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan are getting water unconstitutionally free of cost from Punjab.

********

Water has been a political and emotional issue with the people of Punjab since long. Going by the riparian theory, waters of Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and Yamuna, belonged to the Punjab as it stood prior to 1st November 1966. After the division of Punjab, Ravi Beas and Sutlej came to Punjab and Yamuna to Haryana.

However under the orders of Central government of India, waters of Punjab have been shared with Rajasthan and Haryana. It would have been a different situation, if Punjab had excess waters, whereas Punjab has been facing a shortage of irrigation water from day-one. For the irrigation, Punjab has been compelled to draw ground water, to the extent that major parts of Punjab are in the risk of converting in desert in the coming years.

if the states having minerals, in their area, are entitled to royalty, then, states like Punjab who have consumed their water, in cultivating grain crops, which were urgently needed to feed Indian people, should have got royalty, so that Punjab was not caught in web of debt.

This is by far the most absurd logic I have read smiley39

Let's abolish electoral system cuz people don't know what's good for them. India didnt know what was good for it. Britishers built modern infrastructure/schools and what not for India yet India wanted to stay in its ghetto? While at it let's give all ghettos in India to China, they can rebuild them much better, no

most absurd logic that you have read? well, what can we say? Do you read much? Do you read what you write?smiley36 Because if you did, you'd know that there is something called perspective, and then there's something called scale. smiley2You cant have pea-sized provinces in a large country of 1.4 billion people decide in the middle of it all that they want their own ghetto. Ab aisa toh nahi hota hai na?smiley17smiley36

as a punjabi, I think the punjabi farmers need to improve their farming practices... and diversify away from cultivating water-depleting crops. However much water you give them, it's never going to last forever with the kind of farming we've been doing. Anyway, they have run the state dry, and now should not blame others for their own state of affairs. Next you'd be blaming Modi for the fact that every second individual there is a dope addict. Not nice to not take responsibility for one's own actions.
