Bangladesh have fought back in the last half hour of the day and how! It means they started and ended the day well and could have been in a much better position had they held on to two catches (they also had a third chance but that was really tough). Taijul is the star of the day for Bangladesh by bowling one-third of the entire overs for three top wickets. He got them the first breakthrough with Gill's wicket, then trapped Kohli for 1 with a beauty and toiled the entire day from around the wicket to right-hand batters trying to beat them with his combination of drift and turn. He beat Pujara several times and eventually got him for 90 with the second new ball, before Mehidy was brought on for the last over of the day and his last ball removed Axar to place India on 278 for 6, which I think is still a decent score on this pitch if India get to 300.
They still have Shreyas Iyer out there who is looking good against spin and doing well to keep the shooters away. Given the lack of bounce it doesn't look like a day one pitch at all, and there's good turn as well but that's not an issue.
An absorbing day of Test match cricket. At the end of the day's play, it does seem like the honors are even, although Bangladesh would be the happier side marginally. India won a good toss but most of their batters fell to loose shots, thereby failing to convert starts. In fact, at 48/3, Bangladesh were all over the visitors but a counterattack from Pant started the rearguard action that was furthered by a solid century stand between Pujara and Iyer. The India No.3 was unfortunate to miss out on a deserving century while Iyer's knock has been aggressive albeit with lots of luck. Taijul was the standout bowler for Bangladesh, drying up the runs and also getting the ball to spin sharply. Ebadot also plugged away with real venom but didn't get the luck he deserved. The track hasn't been extremely difficult to bat on, but with the ball turning on the first day itself and variable bounce on display, things could get tougher as the game progresses. That said, the Chattogram pitch does tend to ease out generally, so at this point, the hosts would definitely be happy. Tomorrow should be another action-packed day.
competitive day one for both sides
bd did really well with their bowling but fielding really pulled the team down today esp the wicket keeper
india top order had an aggresive start could not capitalize on it , however iyer and pujara partnership changed things and puts india in the driving seat
late wickets by spinners makes it even
One thing I like about Akash Chopra is that he is very fair in expressing his opinions. If not most commentators are quite biased be it from india, bd or any country.
Ohπ² i thought this was in Janπ
Pujara missed his ton by just 10 runsπ’
Hope ye kami kal shreyas iyer puri karega.
300/350 plus wil be a good score.
Pant also looked good, but he also missed his half century by just 4 runs.π’
India vs Bangladesh Highlights, 1st Test Match: Shreyas Iyer scored unbeaten 82 on Day 1.Β© AFP
Shreyas Iyer was unbeaten on 82 as India posted 278 for 6 on the opening day of the first Test match against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. Earlier, Cheteshwar Pujara scored 90 runs, stitching a 149-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer for the fifth wicket. Taijul Islam claimed three wickets while Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck twice. Khaled Ahmed got the remaining one wicket that fell on the first day. India's stand-in skipper KL Rahul had won the toss and opted to bat against the Shakib Al Hasan-led side.
Regular India skipper Rohit Sharma misses the game due to a thumb injury, therefore KL Rahul is captaining the side.
Taijul Islam 39 test 161 wickets,
Amazing Stats by this Left arm Orthodox spinner! If Bangladesh Fielder took all catches which offered by Pujara & Iyer india might all out by now
Taijul is one & only player who took Hat-rick & 10 wkts a match with-in 30 days.
He will be more Dangerous for india in next Dhaka test where ball turn from 1st day of test.
