karishma, kajol may be hits but they cannot be compared to a madhuri at any cost

its like comparing a nargis/meena kumari madhubala to a kamini kaushal

or comparing a sridevi/juhi chawla to a kimi katkar

Madhuri is way above any actress of 90s and was voted star of millennium

In 90s many had flops even madhuri

same way without content or big actors madhuri made many movies super hit on her own power like HAHK, Beta, Raja etc

If sooraj barjatya was such a big director he should have made hum sath sath hain or main prem ki deewani hoon hits but could not because madhuri made HAHK such a huge hit. Salman rode on madhuri and sooraj barjatya in most of 90s he was not a great actor or ht in 90s.

No karishma or kajol can do that make average movies super duper hits only on her charm and ability

Madhuri's "stardom" is extremely overstated. Like others have mentioned already, she was more popular for her songs/dance...than her performances or star power which was only on display in Raja actually. Extremely lucky too with the amount of chartbuster music she was associated with. Music played a huge part in her success, right from Tezaab to Beta to Dil to Saajan to Khalnayak to HAHK to Raja. A bigger part than her so called "stardom".

Above average looker

Great figure

Fantastic dancer

Below average to average acting skills

Excellent networking capabilities

Lucky in her music

All acknowledged.

Still, undeniably, a superstar. She was bigger than the Khans in the 90s.

Talk was Beta should've been called Beti. HAHK and Raja worked because of Madhuri. She was the main draw in Dil To Pagal Hai. So many more.

None of her contemporaries, male or female, came close.

90s only? I think she is amongst the biggest superstars who have ever ruled Bollywood.

It's very odd to separate her "stardom" from her "popularity" (ie. songs). They are the SAME thing. Her songs were popular = hence she became a bigger star with each smash hit. Since when does acting "performance" denote stardom?????

Madhuri Dixit became a big star in 1988. By 1991 she was already giving Sridevi the toughest competition of her life. By 1994 she had left Sridevi far behind. Juhi also couldn't match her. Kajol and Karisma were not yet established.

MD was by far the biggest female superstar of the 90s. In terms of overall star: Shah Rukh Khan is the only one that can give her a challenge in that category.

If a poll was done in January 2000 which took into account all data from January 1990 to December 1999, based on successful films, magazine column inches, magazine covers, endorsements, fanmail, public hysteria, future films on hand, production house association, beauty and talent, according to me, the Top 20 would be:

1. Madhuri Dixit

2. Sridevi

3. Juhi Chawla

4. Kajol

5. Karisma Kapoor

6. Divya Bharti

7. Manisha Koirala

8. Urmila Matondkar

9. Raveena Tandon

10. Pooja Bhatt

11. Tabu

12. Aishwarya Rai

13. Rani Mukerji

14. Preity Zinta

15. Mahima Choudry

16. Sonali Bendre

17. Shilpa Shetty

18. Sushmita Sen

19. Neelam

20. Mamta Kulkarni

99 onwards it was Ash.

Wild, but true.

I'm glad you changed the narrative. At first it was "Aishwarya reigned" in the latter half of the 90s. I'm glad we agree she "reigned" for the last 6 months of the decade.

According to your logic: Kajol owned 1997 because she had Ishq and Gupt. You didn't even mention her co-stars Juhi or Manisha who were big stars themselves. But for Madhuri's DTPH, you mention Karisma.

And Sridevi? Let's not forget Urmila was a huge selling point in that movie too. In fact, Sridevi was not even on some pressings of the album cover. Because she was coming off a massive era of flops. Much bigger and longer than the 2 flops Madhuri had in 1996 which you have repeated several times.

Your bias is showing.

It baffles me when Madhuri is referred to as an average actor. Frankly her dance and her dazzling smile and looks are responsible for Madhuri being overlooked as the brilliant actor that she is. Also another reason her acting gets overlooked as coz I suppose she's a very subtle and restrained actors, when most of the so-called good actors are basically OTT.

Even in her worst movies like zindagi ek hua, she stands out. It's just the subtle way she expresses with her eyes and body language, that is just so captivating. Guess not many people appreciate restrained performances, when it's the silence and expressions that emote. Having said that, she's equally brilliant in comedic roles, but once more it's not OTT, which Indian comedy movies tend to be.

@RekhaJi

Sridevi wasn't "left behind." She was DETHRONED after a decade of ruling the roost. Familiarity does breed contempt, and she'd been around a long time by then and considered too old to play oppo next generation of lead heroes.

Otherwise, she and Amitabh were the superstars of the 80s.

Madhuri came along in the late 80s and established herself by the 90s. One of the reasons MD got to be THE superstar of the 90s is there were no male actors of Amitabh's stature in that period.

Add to that the fact Sridevi could actually act in addition to being a fabulous dancer and looking glam.

Juhi was left behind by Madhuri, Manisha was left behind.

Comparing Sri and Madhuri in this context is like saying SRK left Amitabh behind.

Acknowledged her superstardom.

But...

Madhuri's looks and dancing skills actually saved her from being called out for the below average actress she was/is. Blandness is not same as subtlety. Subtle was a Tabu. Subtle was a Juhi when she actually chose not to be lazy. Subtle was a Manisha when she focused.

Once Madhuri's youth and beauty wore off, her relative lack of acting skills actually became glaringly evident. Take her Aaja Nacchle or Gulabi Gang.
