without a doubt. I am a 90's teen , Madhuri topped all charts. Excellent openings and box office records. Second only to Sridevi (when Sri was in her peak).

Yet to see another actress make such a mark after Sri-Mads.

Just checked her filmography...

Beta (1992) gave her the #1 status... Raja (1995) was a big hit because of her. During this period she gave some big hits with young actors and a 3X more flops too, like 1 movie in 1993 was a blockbuster baaki ke chaar flops. And after that she gained weight all movies flopped. Dil Toh Pagal Hai happened during her flop phase she had already lost her position to Karishma/Manisha/Kajol by then. It was SRK and Yash Chopra's hit, not hers because of the loss of popularity.

In the Beta-Raja period she gave a LLOOTT of flops... she couldn't salvage those projects despite flying high despite giving hit albums. That means she also needed good story (The ones janta would like), pairing, music during that phase to make those movies work.

So yeah she was just like other #1 actresses who reigned BW for 3 years.

Yeh toh gayi box-office wise.. she didn't guarantee a hit even during her peak. Her craze was actually due to her dance performances. She had supehit songs in her flop films as well. And those days... songs used to release almost a year before the films release... toh song hit hote hi actress ko jo craze zaroori hoti thi mil jaati thi... film flop hone se utna kuch farak nahin padta tha.

Only first half of 90s. She was a flop queen after 1995.

Karishma, Kajol and Aishwarya reigned supreme in the latter half of the 90s.

I can understand about Kajol and karisma, but how did Aishwarya rein supreme? Aishwarya was never a box office draw, nor did she ever have any superhit on her own shoulders unlike kajol, karisma, madhuri, sridevi, katrina and even deepika.

Ghayal was the biggest grosser of 1990, not Dil. Ghayal ran for 2 years straight.

https://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=6063

Ghayal started to catch Dil up in 1991 with strong repeat runs as Sunny Deol consolidated the action image. The business of Ghayal remained lower than Dil in Delhi / UP and East India but in other circuits it caught up and went ahead. It became the highest grossing film of 1990 in early 1992 as it collected almost 1 crore nett in a huge repeat run in Mumbai circuit.

1. That's to determine the verdict of the film. Total collection still remains 300cr 400cr.

2. Those days movies used to run for a year, that's normal not rerun.

On Topic: Tumne Badshah Akbar ko dethrone kiya hai... tum great ho ya naa ho... tumhe Badshah Akbar wale treatments milenge. Tumne Bahadur Shah Zafar ko dethrone kiya hai tumhe milenge BSZ wale treatment. Madhuri had dethroned the then pan Indian superstar Sridevi, so she got Sridevi's type of hype and remuneration. Agar Meenakshi/Kajol type ko replace ki hoti... waisi wali treatement hi milti. It was the perk of dethroning a big king, not her success rate that gave Madhuri a huge image. I only learnt yesterday that she had so many flops during her peak. It was like Dostana time's PC. Dostana and Fashion hit but in the same year PC gave 4 flops and disasters.

The BOI article itself is saying that it was a re-run, and Ghayal crossed Dil figures because of re-run.

And trade never counts re-run figures when talking about the lifetime collections of a movie.
