There is no doubt that wrestling is very popular in Pakistan. It might not be a a part of the pop culture in the US, but is on a rise in our country. Data proves that it is one of the most searched terms in Pakistan.
Going by this, news is that a leading sports channel in Pakistan is trying to get rights to air WWWE shows on national television. Earlier, before the boon in television, STN used to air WCW and WWF shows; however, with changing scenario, things changed.
When Geo Sports was launched, it tried its best to air WWE; however, at that time it could not reach a contract, as the 'E was asking for a higher price, which the channel couldn't afford at that time. This is why it had to resort to airing TNA (Total Nonstop Action) to a dismal response.
Now, the rumors are rife again that a sports channel is trying to buy the rights to air weekly shows again.
However, a WWE source says that WWE indeed received interest from local channels, but it could not move further as the WWE already is under contract with Ten Sports to air its shows in the Indo-Pak region. The source said that the contract will run for three more years, which means there is no hope of watching the 'E on local channels.
It must be mentioned that the WWE extravaganza, Wrestlemania that aired on Ten Sports in April (for free), recorded really high ratings, sparking interest.
