When I witnessed the Meri Laadli's promo, I was shocked, and not in a good way. I couldn't understand why they were putting this serial on Saturdays. Was it a wise move on ARY's part, or my suspicions proved right? Read on to find out!
Meri laadli is necessarily the story of two cousins, their issues, especially when they fall for the same guy. First of all, I have a huge problem with the marketing department. Why was this show promoted as something based on sibling issues? It actually has a lot more to tell.
The first half a dozen episodes concentrated more on other issues. The sibling's part didn't begin until the leap and the entrance of the main lead (Ahsan Khan)
Having said that, the only reason I gave this one a try is because it's written by Maha Malik. She ranks high among list of my favorite writers today. The girl won me over with her dialogues in Maaye Ni and Jo Chalay… here again she proves her mettle. Great writer!
She writes an enriching screenplay, but is let down by a weak story. The story until the major twist (razai bhai-behan one) is dull and predictable. I mean, everyone knew what was in store. I always say that it isn't about the story but the presentation. I remain true to my comments, but the problem here is that there was potential to show so much. SO MUCH!
The whole Adil Murad track is wasted. Why? It genuinely had the potential to be great. Mr.Farooqui's (the twin guy) track also isn't fully polished. This is a blemish from writing point of view. But then, I am asking for too much. Maha actually pulls of an intriguing story out of whatever she was provided.
The director,Nadeem Siddiqi, has shown improvement. I wasn't a fan of his work until recently. Here he shows great improvement and pulls off scenes with alomp. I don't really have much to complain here. The writer I have already covered in detail above. The editing is okay. Is the OST there? I am not too sure… because if it is there I never bothered listening. Must have been bad.
Now to the acting part. This is the best thing about this serial. It packs in a mixture of both new and old faces. Sajal Ali plays the nave girl beautifully. This actress has come a long way, but still has miles to go. Mawra is still struggling, but looks pretty nevertheless. Anyway, why has she invaded our screens all of a sudden? She is too much on our TV screen.
I again have the same complaint with Ahsan Khan. I don't remember the last time he got a good role to play. This is again mediocre at best and he pulls it off well. But isn't he doing the same thing in the rest of his serials? Please, Ahsan, you are capable of much more.
Tehreem is excellent. The girl is really talented. She has played variety roles in a short span of time, and is excellent in all of them. Maria Wasti is suddenly the most boring thing on planet. Just writing about her makes ma yawn! The rest of the cast from Qaisem Naqvi to Urwah is good.
Over all, this isn't among the best on serials, and is easily overshadowed by better entertainment options that we have today. It has a decent story with acceptable acting, but does not make it to the coveted "Must Watch" list.
