As far as I know, the praising towards Payal Kapadia was about that she made India proud (which is correct)...there had been even open criticism when the Indian Filminstitute tried to get a hand in this success.

I won't comment on other things he said because that would involve politics.

Anurag Kashyap: Payal Kapadia wouldn't be able to survive as a filmmaker in India

"India has not even given the 30 percent rebate due to Payal Kapadia, on her film. We should stop taking credit for (her win). The kind of films she makes... It's going to be difficult in this country. Bina foreign support ke ban hi nahi sakti (It can never be made without support from international funds). We have made films like 'Lunchbox', 'Masaan', or even 'Monsoon' 'Shootout'. We would not have managed to make these films without co-production support."

Calling out the film business in the country, Kashyap said that India is obsessed with numbers and that's the parameter to judge a film. He added that this is a fatal criterion for a creative person. "Yahan pe filmein ek hi hisab se dekhi jaati hai ke paise kitne kamayi (Films are judged here based on how much they earned). But there are other avenues to earn money. So yahan Payal Kapadia survive hi nahi kar sakti hai as a filmmaker (She would not be able to survive here as a filmmaker). It's a very long hard road, people have no vision here as they are only limited till the box office."

When asked what could change to empower such talented filmmakers in the country, the award-winning filmmaker said, "Till the time, the business is controlled by trade people, who have differing figures all the time. They are not on the same table. We need to have a transparent system. In China, you can go online to see how much a film does business, show by show, cinema by cinema, and seat by seat. That's the transparency missing here. Also, we have a population of 1.4 billion, with just 20,000 screens. How will cinema survive in India? Earlier NFDC (National Film Development Corporation) used to support films like 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron', but ab woh bhi bandh hogaya hai (now that's stopped too). Sab dikhawaya hai (everything is a farce). Even subsidy is just promised, never paid."
