Kalki 2898 AD and Fighter have emerged the biggest grossers of the first half year and while the former is a HIT the latter is not but in terms of appreciation there is not much of a gap. Both films have mainly found appreciation in the A centres and Kalki 2898 AD maybe just edges a little here.

The difference in terms of success comes because Kalki 2898 AD managed to open well in mass centres and this is despite the film not really being for them and the drops started on Monday but that did not matter much as the job was done. Now if Fighter had opened in mass centres it would be looking at a similar story as the film had a following in the bigger centres which would have carried it but it totally missed out on an initial in the mass circuits.
Fighter was an aerial action film which is going hold less appeal with mass but Kalki 2898 AD is also a part futuristic / sci - fi which also will hold less appeal which showed on Monday but it OPENED and that too with limited publicity. This is just not the case with Fighter but almost all original Hindi films where mass circuit ratios are less and it can be said most films made in Mumbai are not for this audience which is probably true but bigger films need mass support to get the numbers they need and when you cant even open there is no coming back.
Here Kalki 2898 AD is also not a film for that audience but its opening with that audience making it a winner Does it mean that Prabhas is actually one of the biggest stars in Hindi mass if not biggest and if this is true it would make him the biggest star in India by a distance due to the huge appeal in Nizam / Andhra and also bigger markets in other Southern markets than all our stars. Prabhas is a hero whose voice is dubbed and there are no famous dialogues to take you to the peak as far as Hindi cinema goes but it has to be noted that he is opening a film in mass which should maybe not be and sadly this has not happened with our stars post pandemic. Prior to pandemic no questions arise.
The industry is on its knees with hardly any new films starting although it will not look like that as announcements will come in the media every week but in reality thats not the case. The only way things are going to get better is with better box office and for that there has to be mass circuit support simply because it has an over lapping audience (in that there is a similar audience in the major centres as well while it does not work the same vice versa). It is a better box office which will take of the digital prices which have hit rock bottom with so few players left.
Honestly speaking at the moment it looks better that the original Hindi films launched with our directors are budgeted to aim at 75-150 crore nett mark and work to ensure a HIT song or two as the big films just look scary as to how they going to this mass crowd in. The star factor is working nothing like it used to and it looks the mass crowd just dont want to see the yuppie type heroes with their six packs as they dont see them as their own. Hopefully some films come and prove this wrong but at the moment there does look some truth to it,
