Meet Jim Sarbh: The terrorist who steals the show in Neerja

By Subhash K. Jha, Feb 26, 2016 - 10:59 hrs IST
#

In Neerja a young actor playing Khalil the most volatile terrorist on board the ill-fated PanAm flight which took away Neerja Bhanot's life, has caught everyone's eye. He is a young Parsi from Mumbai and a practicing theatre actor for the last four years, with no history of actors or acting in his family.

This, you tell him, is hard to believe.

Laughs Jim, "My father was in the navy. My mother was a physio-therapist. There are no actors in our family. I grew interested in acting on my own. Have been doing plays in English for four years. I am trying to take all the compliments for Neerja in my stride. But I am as astonished as a child who suddenly finds himself in a toy store."

When the role of Khalil was offered to Jim, he felt charged as an actor but just that bit anxious about playing a terrorist. "We are living in dangerous times. Playing a terrorist could lead to unexpected complications. But the writers of Neerja, Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh made sure that my character did not come across as rabid religious radical shouting fanatical chants. Khalil is more like a member of a crime organization. I played him as someone at the lower echelons of the organization desperate to make his presence felt, anxious to make his way higher up. Therefore when he sees his leader in the hijack group faltering my character quickly steps in."

Jim enjoyed the challenge of creating a believable terrorist in Neerja. It is his first feature film and the actor is already working in his second feature film. Speaking of the project Jim enthusiasm "It's Konkona Sen Sharma's directorial debut. It is an ensemble cast. I have with me Vikrant Massey, Tillotama Shome, Gulshan Devaiah, Kalki Koechlin, Ranveer Shorey, Om Puri Ji and veteran actress Tanuja Ji in the cast with me. It's a dream come true to be working with so many talented actors all at once."

Jim wraps up his shooting of Konkona's film in Ranchi and heads for Mumbai to be part of Kalki Koechlin's theatrical debut as a director in The Living Room.

"I have just started in cinema. I hope to do a variety of roles," Jim promises himself.

HE was spectacular in Neerja. He was surely the showstealer as the chief antagonist. He scared me when he was trying to channelize all his anger with those body language and carzy mannerisms. It was fabulous to see such natural depiction of a man who has specific mental conditioning. Barvo to him. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Wow! He stars In konkona Senshrama's directorial debut. More reasons to wait for that film. Cant wait to see what director Konkona and these actors have in offering.

its too early to say...but this guy better get some recognition for his brilliant villain act.
I want all to watch this movie couple of times. just watch this guy go...mann oh mann...too good! saale meh toh mera dil jeet liya. his job was to make the audience HATE him, and boy oh boy, just like KRK said, I felt like dive on the screen, grab this guy and KILL HIM.

I want to see him and Sonam do a movie together...maybe something like DDDarrr or Aajaam.
yup..they looked good together. bring them on!!!

His natural acting was liven up most of scene in plane. Most audience really want he to die and hate he so much. It make audience really love Neerja and sympathy to her

So typical of Jha to downplay Sonam's contribution like this. Has to uphold his rep as DP's mouthpiece na. πŸ˜†

Not completely negating what he said, Jim Sarbh was AWESOME and I have given credit to him for his performance but to say that he stole the show is streching it. Makes Jha look like an unprofessional (which he is) & quite delusional too. πŸ€ͺ

Now before someone quotes me and goes ballistic on the Sonam fans I say this cause just look at the headline! Terrorist who steals the show. πŸ˜† Just no, not in a story like this.
