Part 6 -
There was a loud noise of the alarm in Pragya's room as she sat up scratching her head. It felt as if it would burst with pain. How had she slept over? She never let the alarm disturb her. Slowly all the memories of the previous night came flooding back to her.
She reached out for the alarm to snooze it when Abhi and Tanu walked into her room with a tray of biscuits.
"You guys, here?"
"Yes, we thought we would surprise you, how are you feeling now?"
"Good"
Abhi handed her the cup of tea and placed the biscuits next to her.
"Eat them and get changed, we will meet you downstairs."
As Pragya walked to the bathroom she wondered why they were being extra sweet, was there something they needed to tell her. Pragya slowly got changed and came out. She walked downstairs where saw them sitting at the table.
It wasn't only them - there was Abhi's daadi and Tanu's parents. Why were they at her house? She took their blessings but they all stayed silent.
"What happened maa?" Pragya asked Sarla.
"Well, this letter came this morning?" Sarla handed it to her sternly.
"What is it?" Pragya began to open it.
She read the first line and her face burst into a smile. She looked up to see them all grinning at her.
She cheered as she hugged Sarla.
"You nearly gave me a heart attack! Why couldn't you have just told me that I have been granted a position at London University!"
They all congratulated her as she smiled, the day was going well. It was a dream come true for her, she was seeing her whole future before her.
"Well, then, when are you going?"
"Umm, according to this, in two weeks' time"
"What? So soon?" Tanu asked in surprise.
"Yeah" Pragya told her. "Why?"
"I am going to miss you though, I mean, I have never spent a day without you so how will I now?" Tanu moaned.
"Yeah but on the bright side Tanu, she won't be away for too long, she will come back soon."
"I know but-" Tanu hugged Pragya.
"Okay so I guess you should start shopping for everything you need then?" Abhi advised her and they all agreed.
~
The next two weeks passed very quickly for Pragya, she was having such fun with everyone and it diverted her thoughts about what happened the night of Purab's party, if she couldn't have her happiness then she could at least appreciate Abhi and Tanu's.
As she walked out to leave for the car where they were all waiting to leave for the airport, Pragya picked up the earrings that Abhi had sent for Tanu when they had been mailing overseas but Tanu never wore them cause she didn't find them to match her liking. Pragya adored them and had worn them since but as Abhi had come to visit she had no choice but to take them off. She put them in her purse before leaving. It was something she could cherish and held very close to her heart.
~
Her departure from the airport had been an emotional one. Pragya had never left her mother or friends for more than a few hours, so while sitting on the plane she had already started to miss them. She looked at the picture of them all in her phone and smiled. On the bright side she would be back soon, she was only here to study. Pragya dozed off in thoughts about them all.
~
Abhi and Tanu had helped Sarla at her house for a while as she was now alone before going home.
"It feels like something is missing doesn't it?" Abhi told Tanu as he sighed sitting down.
"Yeah, I miss her already" Tanu looked at the photo of the two of them.
"You really love her a lot, don't you?" Abhi asked Tanu.
"Yeah, you know we both don't have a sister, but we don't need one anyway because we are like sisters to each other. She has always helped me so much in everything I do, she is my strength but I just never show it to her, you can't tell her I said this okay?"
"Don't worry I will" Abhi winked at her and she gently slapped him on the arm.
"Don't you dare"
She hugged him; Abhi held her gently but for some reason it didn't feel right, it just wasn't the same.
~
A few months passed and Tanu grew her attraction towards Abhi, they had kept in touch with Pragya since and she was doing well with her studies. Abhi and his Daadi had needed to leave for England to sort some issues with their property. Tanu missed them all, both Abhi and Pragya had gone, she wanted them to be back, she missed the fun they had together. She walked downstairs to talk to her parents about something important.
~
Pragya crossed the road as she walked back to her flat where she had been staying since she had arrived. She was doing well and she had made many different friends, she liked the environment. As she opened the door to her flat she saw that someone was already sitting there.
"Excuse me, who are you? And how the hell did you get in?" Pragya asked angry.
"I'm sorry ma'am I shall leave if you like?" Abhi turned around grinning at her.
"Oh my god! You?" Pragya felt like dancing on the spot. He was here! "When I mean how, I mean why, is everything okay? How's Tanu, maa, daadi?" Pragya burst upon him with questions.
"Arre, calm down, and why are there no questions about me?" Abhi asked. He hugged her as they sat down.
"I'm joking, right so everyone is good, me and Daadi came here for a week because she needed to sort some issues out. What I should be asking is how you are. How are your studies, any new friends? When are you going back to India, most importantly?"
"Well, I like it here, I have made many new friends, and it's nice here! Well, good thing as you and Daadi are here for a week, I too was going back the same time as you!"
"Great! Okay so have you got anything planned tonight, because if you don't then we can hang out, I will take you to my favourite place?"
"Yeah, I'm free"
"Okay so get ready I'm waiting here."
Pragya smiled as she leaved to get ready, this was the best thing she could have ever asked for. Abhi thought that before she could come out he would pack her bags and surprise her by taking her to his house for the remainder of her time at London. He went to the wardrobe and found there wasn't too much stuff so it would be an easy task. He picked her clothes and folded them neatly as he put them into her suitcase. He then moved the her small belonging such as jewellery. While packing the last bits away he saw a little box slip out. He gently opened it to see a pair of gold shining earings, two simple ones. Why did he think he had seen them before?
Think Abhi think. Abhi concentrated hard and he instantly realised that these earrings were those he had sent to Tanu, what were they doing in Pragya's bag. He opened the bag to look for more clues and found a larger box, he knew it was wrong to go through her possessions but without dwelling over right and wrong for too long he opened it to find more things that he had given to Tanu along with some mails that had conversation that had meant a little more than others.
Abhi felt as if he had found the missing jigsaw piece, it suddenly all made a whole lot more sense. It had been Pragya all along, he had always thought there was something about her and now here it was before him, shining at him to be believed. He had always had a different kind of liking towards her; he remembered all those times when what Tanu said didn't match the e-mails.
This was why, this was why Tanu hugging him never felt right. She wasn't the right girl, it was Pragya.
Abhi heard her coming out of the washroom and quickly put it all back in the bag before leaving it under the bed so that he could simply take her back to his house when they came back. But for now his attention was to find out why they had hidden such a big secret from him this long, why had they fooled him, a part of his heart did pain but then on the bright side he was looking at her in a completely different way, it was a way that took his restlessness away.
So this was it, he needed Pragya to admit the truth her-self. He needed to make her tell him everything.
