Movie Review: Chamku fails to shine

With the release of Chamku in 2008, Dharmendra’s own production house, Vijeta Films celebrates its Silver Jubilee, starring Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra. The supporting cast include Irrfan Khan, Danny Denzongpa , Ritesh Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Arya Babbar. The movie is directed by Kabeer Kaushik, and produced under the banner of Vijeta Films.

'Chamku' is the journey of a boy Chandrama Singh alias Chamku (Bobby Deol) whose family had been brutally murdered and was brought up and trained by Naxalites in Southern interiors of Bihar. He was later picked up under a covert Governmental Program jointly conceived by RAW & IB. Chamku was trained to kill. Best in the business, operations, encounters and political assassinations, and soon became the blue-eyed boy. He was given the toughest jobs which he tackled with ease. His life changes when love enters his life and makes him realize how beautiful life is… But his past comes and stands on his face.

On the whole, the film starts as the account of an oppressed farmer, switches track to outlawed naxalite narrative, substitutes with the story of an intelligence officer and finally ends up being a regular revenge drama.

The Bobby DeolPriyanka Chopra love story too was unnecessary. The only reason it is their in the movie is that a hindi movie needs a love angle plus it also attracts the audience to the theatre.

Performance wise Bobby gets it right. He conveys a lot even when silent. This performance deserves all the praise. Priyanka looks good, as usual. Her character seems to walk in and out of the film as she pleases while actors like Rajpal Yadav, Danny, Ritiesh Deshmukh have pointless cameos and are completely wasted.

The music by Monty Sharma is decent, a few songs are melodious.

Overall, Chamku is a typical Bollywood Stories that have been seen-a-hundred-times-before in the 90s movie.

Bolly Curry Rating: 2 Chillies Out Of 5. Chamku fails to shine.
