Change is the only constant in the world with time being the best agent of that change. Everything moves with time, thus giving birth to a process like evolution. BollyCurry is celebrating a part of that change. Maturity, a transition one goes through from birth to adulthood with gain of wisdom, responsibility and experiences. Presenting to the readers, we have a few Bollywood movies that made it to the list of mature love stories which have entertained us all these years.
Cheeni
Kum
One of the most critically
acclaimed movies at the time of its release in 2007, Cheeni Kum is
a fine example of a love story never seen before.
Boasting of a stellar cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Paresh Rawal,
Zohra
Sehgal and Tabu, the movie revolves around a couple with an age gap,
Buddhadev and Nina. Buddhadev, played by Bachchan, is a 64 year old man
that is older than Nina's (Tabu) father, a fact which acts as an
obstacle in their love story owing to societal norms regarding age
differences between couples. As the movie
progresses, Omprakash Verma, played by Rawal, finally sees the truth of
life and their love accepting Buddhadev as his son-in-law.
Mere
Baap Pehle Aap
A 2008 comedy, as the title Mere Baap Pehle Aap itself
depicts, the
love story is not of the hero and the heroine, but that of their elders.
Gaurav
[Akshay Khanna] and Sheekha [Genelia Dsouza] strive to reunite the
former's
widower father Janaradhan Rane [Paresh Rawal] and the latter's
bachelorette dance
teacher Anuradha [Shobana] who were once lovers, but forced to separate
due to unfortunate circumstances. A point comes when Gaurav has to
choose between the love of his
life and his father's, and his choice of picking his father's happiness
over his own is
what gives the audiences food for thought.
One of the highest grosser of the
year 2003, Baghban's central theme
may have been the relationship between parents and their kids, but the story
was built around the mature love story of the parents. Raj Malhotra [Amitabh Bachchan]
and Pooja [Hema Malini] always fulfilled the wishes of their four sons at
the cost of their own requirements. But when time comes for them to retire and
they wish to spend time with their sons, the latter are unhappy by the decision
and separate their parents in the process. The theme of the movie is incomplete
without the strong bond of love that unites this couple even when as they step in
their old age.
Kabhi
Alvida Naa Kehna
The movie may have received mixed
reviews from the audiences, but Kabhi
Alvida Naa Kehna was a game-changer in the year 2006. Dealing with a controversial issue like extramarital affair, the movie received
negative publicity for supporting the same. Dev [Shah Rukh Khan] is stuck in an
unhappy marriage with Rhea [Preity Zinta] and Maya [Rani Mukherjee] with Rishi
[Abhishek Bachchan]. Against all odds, Dev and Maya fall for each other and end
up together, breaking an auspicious tradition like marriage. Despite the bad
reviews, the movie did fairly well proving the existence of a section of
society who is ready to think over issues maturely.
Life
in a Metro
Released in 2007, Life in a... Metro is a movie
which set a
milestone for the upcoming lot. The movie starred some of the finest
actors of the industry like Irrfan Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Dharmendra,
Nafisa Ali, Kay
Kay Menon, Kangana Ranaut, Sharman Joshi, Shilpa Shetty and Shiney
Ahuja.
Despite consisting of an ensemble cast, the film did a phenomenal job
developing an intricate web of love, lies and relationships between
these various characters at different stages of their lives. The movie
ended on a mixed note, where some love stories sail
through while others are left with nothing but regret and suffering.
Bollywood
has surely taken a big leap in the 100 years of its existence. The
transition may have
been for the better or the worse, but all in all, there is a sense of
maturity
now not only in the stories, but in the actors, the film-makers and the
audiences as well. The messages and lessons that films try to get across
have evolved as well with some going against norms and some pointing
out the holes that need changes. Keep a look out on this space as we
shall return with more
interesting characteristics for you all in this month of September.
