Originally released on November 12, 2004, the legendary movie Veer-Zaara made a comeback to cinemas worldwide on Thursday to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Produced by Yash Raj Films, the film garnered a remarkable USD 185,000 (Rs. 1.50 crore) over the weekend. This year, the movie was also re-released in India, amassing Rs. 3.75 crore in earnings. Collectively, these re-releases have generated over Rs. 5 crore globally in the current year.
Veer Zaara had a re-release on 600 screens globally, debuting for the first time in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar. The film initially hit cinema screens worldwide on November 12, 2004.
Germany witnessed the most favorable reception during the re-release, with the film raking in EUR 25K from only about 25 screenings. Following closely, Canada emerged as the next top performer with a weekend collection of CAD 43K from just 10 theaters. The earnings could have soared higher had additional shows been scheduled, given that prime areas like Toronto and Surrey were consistently packed with 2-3 shows daily.
France also saw a significant turnout, with 700 admissions on Friday across merely five screens, surpassing the attendance figures of many new Indian releases.
Yash Chopra, a seasoned filmmaker, helmed Veer-Zaara with a screenplay penned by his son Aditya Chopra. This cinematic masterpiece unfolds a poignant cross-border love saga spanning two decades between Veer Pratap Singh, an Indian Air Force officer, and Zaara Hayaat Khan, the daughter of a Pakistani politician.
In a press release, the production house stated that Veer-Zaara, one of the most iconic Indian films ever made, clinched the title of the highest-grossing Indian movie of the year, both domestically in India and globally.
