Superstar Aamir Khan and his former wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, recently had a revealing conversation with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud after a special screening of their film Laapataa Ladies at the Supreme Court. The screening, held on Friday, was part of a gender sensitization program attended by several apex court judges.

During the discussion, Aamir Khan shared his thoughts on the film and his future in the industry. He explained that his decision to back Laapataa Ladies was driven by both “fear and desire.” Reflecting on his career, Aamir stated, “During COVID, at the age of 56, I realized this is the last leg of my career. I might have 15 more years of active work left, and I wanted to give back. The industry, society, and country have given me so much. I thought I could do one film a year, but as a producer, I can back multiple stories that I feel strongly about.”

Aamir, known for supporting socially relevant films, highlighted his commitment to nurturing new talent. “Through producing, I can provide a platform for new writers, directors, and everyone involved in the process. Laapataa Ladies is the first step in that direction. I want to promote this kind of talent and hope to produce four to five films a year so that we can see more such movies,” he explained.

Chief Justice Chandrachud also inquired about the inspiration behind Laapataa Ladies. Kiran Rao revealed that the project began with an original script by Biplab Goswami, which Aamir discovered during a Screen Writers Association competition in 2020. They bought the rights and decided to add more humor to the dramatic narrative. “The journey was long and uncertain due to changes in the cinema industry. Despite advice to release the film directly on OTT platforms, we chose to debut it in cinemas. The film has received a lot of love from the audience, and I’m glad we took it to the big screen,” Kiran said.

Laapataa Ladies tells the story of two newlywed brides who accidentally get exchanged during a train ride to their husbands’ homes. The film did well at the box office and later achieved even greater success on Netflix, breaking several viewership records.

Please retire. Your time is over. You did some good movies in the past but now you don’t have anything new to offer.
