Artist discussion
Thanks for sharing one more enchanting song from Zhālā Mahāra Paṇḍharīnātha.
Sudhir Phadke, who was generally careful about pronunciation (such as the distinction between palatal श śa and cerebral ष ṣa), mispronounced jaḍa dehī (in our insensate bodies) as zaḍa dehī (in our heavy bodies) in this song.
This Marathi song is in the voice of Damayantī addressing Nala, having fallen in love with him without ever meeting him. Like the whole world today, she's unable to identify the Niṣadha country that his name made famous.

Lyrics
Rājahaṃsa sāṅgato kīrticyā tujhyā kathā
Hṛdayi prīta zāgate zāṇatā azāṇatā
The royal swan tells tales of your fame
Love's awake in my heart, knowing or unknowing
Pāhile tulā na mī tarihi nitya pāhate
Lāzunī manomanī ugiça dhunda rāhate
Ṭhāuka na mazasi zarī Niṣadha deśa koṇatā
I haven't seen you, and yet I always see you
Blushing within my mind, needlessly I stay entranced
Although I don't know Niṣadha is which country
Divasa-rātra oḍhaṇī yā manāsa lāgate
Tujhiça zāhalyāparī mī sad'aiva vāgate
Maitriṇīṃsa sāṅgate tujhi amola yogyatā
Day and night the pull possesses my mind
I always behave as if I've become only yours
To my friends I tell your invaluable eligibility
Nimantraṇāvinā punhā haṃsa yei to vanī
Nāda-citra rekhito tuzheça manda kūjanī
Veḍa vāḍhavūna to uḍuna zāya māgutā
Uninvited, again that swan comes to the garden
Sketches a sound-portrait of you with soft honking
Augments my craze, then he goes flying back
This Marathi song is Kaṇva's soliloquy as he watches Śakuntalā leaving the hermitage.

Lyrics
Sāsuryāsa çālalī lāḍakī Śakuntalā
Çālalī Śakuntalā
Çālato ticyāsave ticyāta jīva guntalā
To her marital home goes cherished Śakuntalā
Goes Śakuntalā
Goes along with her my soul entangled in her
Ḍhāḷatāta āsave mora hariṇa-śāvake
Mūka āza zāhale sarva pakṣī bolake
Yāpuḍhe sakhī nure mādhavī-late tulā
Peafowl and deer-fawns shed tears
Today, all voluble birds have become mute
Hereafter no friend remains for you, hiptage liana!
Pāna pāna gāḷunī duḥkha dāvitī tarū
Garbhiṇī mṛgī kuṇī vāṭa ye ticī dharū
Dantī dharūna pallavā āḍavī khuḷī tilā
Drooping every leaf, the plants show pain
Some pregnant animal comes to follow her path
Holding a flower in her teeth, foolishly blocks her
Bhāva-mukta mī munī malā na śoka āvare
Janmadāsa sosave duḥkha he kase bare
Kanyakā na kanaka-koṣa mī dhanyāsa arpilā
I, a hermit free of passion, even I can't control grief
How would a birth father endure this pain at all?
Not a girl, a gold-chest to the rich man I've surrendered
Here's another Marathi song in the voice of Sītā.

Lyrics
Kāla mī Raghu-nandana pāhile
Śyāma manohara rūpa pāhatā pāhatacī rāhile
Yesterday I saw the Raghu dynasty's delight
Watching that charming dark shape, just watching I remained
Visarūna mandira visarūna pūjā
Mane pūjilā to yuva-rājā
Abodha kasale aśrū mājhyā ḍoḷyāṃtūna vāhile
Forgetting the shrine, forgetting worship
Mentally I worshipped that youthful royal
Unaware how tears flowed from my eyes!
Vīra-veṣa te taruṇa dhanurdhara
Jiṅkūna gele māzhe antara
Tyā nayanāṃçe candra-bāṇa mī hṛdayī yā sāhile
In hero's guise that youthful archer
Conquered my soul as he passed
Those eyes' crescent arrows I felt in my heart
Rupale śara te azunī khupatī
Eka dṛśya te ḍoḷe zapatī
Priye Māṇḍavī jīvita māzhe tyāṃnā mī vāhile
Lodged, those arrows yet rankle
That one vision my eyes preserve
Dear Māṇḍavī, my life I've dedicated to him
Song: Vāzavī Pāvā Govinda
Singer: Manik Varma

Music: Sudhir Phadke

Lyrics
Śaradāçe çāndaṇe, Madhuvanī phulalā niśigandha
Nāçato gopī-jana-vṛnda
Vāzavī pāvā Govinda
Autumn moonlight ... in Honeywood bloomed the tuberose
The cattlewomen's bevy dances
Cowfinder plays the flute
Paiṃzaṇa ruṇazhuṇatī
Mekhalā kaṭīvara kiṇakiṇatī
Vāhate Yamunā-jaḷa dhunda
Anklets rhythmically tinkle
Girdles on hips jingle
Yamunā's water flows entranced
Vārā zhuḷazhuḷato
Phulāṃçā sugandha daravaḷato
Sāṇḍato bharunī ānanda
The wind murmurs
Flowers' fragrance spreads
Bliss fills and spills
Dharuniyā phera Harībhavatī
Gojiryā gopī guṇaguṇatī
Āgaḷā Rāsāçā chanda
Forming a circle around Hari
Graceful cattlewomen hum
Outstanding, Rāsa's pastime!
Chhaya, a pregnant woman, enjoys a moonlit night in the garden with her husband Mukund, imagining how their baby will run about.

Lyrics
Kheḷate hiravāḷīta çāndaṇe
Mājhyā kānī ugīçaça yetī bāḷācī paiṃzaṇe
Moonlight plays in the greenery
Gratuitously, my ears hear a baby's anklets
Saṃkhyā mojīta tāryāñcī
Zhuḷūka paḷe gaṃ vāryācī
Nayanī mājhyā disate avakhaḷa bāḷāçe dhāvaṇe
Counting the number of stars
A gust of wind runs, girls!
My eyes see a baby's mischievous dashing
Halatī pāne vṛkṣāñcī
Kuzabūza hote pakṣyāñcī
Malā vāṭate zhopetīla he bāḷāçe bolaṇe
The trees' leaves rustle
Birds are chirping
I think this is a baby talking in its sleep
Khaḷabaḷa kānī pāṇyācī
Chabī hāsate candrācī
Gojiravāṇe pāḷaṇyātale bāḷāçe hāsaṇe
Water babbles in my ears
The moon's glow laughs
Rather graceful, the cradled baby's laughter
The moon and its halo reflected in the water become metaphors for drifting lovers in this Marathi song from a mythological movie.
Song: Çāndaṇyāta Çālu De

Lyrics
Çāndaṇyāta çālu de manda nāva nāvikā
Taraṅgatī jaḷāvarī santha candra candrikā
In moonlight let the boat travel slowly, boatman!
On the water drift leisurely the moon and moon-halo
Nakoça āza bolaṇe, bolu deta locane
Locanāṃta raṅgalyā bhāvanā anāmikā
Let's not talk at all today; let eyes talk
Our eyes display nameless emotions
Tūça sātha de malā, tūça hāta de malā
Tūça ne tujhyāsave mantra-mugdha bālikā
Only you, give me company; only you, give me your hand
Only you, take with you, the spellbound young lady
Bhāva je asāvale, tujhyāta te visāvale
Nakosa hou re kadhī saṃgatīsa pārakhā
Emotions that turn to tears, in you they take refuge
Man, don't ever become a stranger to our company

Song: Nāvikā Çala Tethe

Lyrics
Nāvikā çala tethe daravaḷate jethe çāndaṇe
Boatman, let's go there where moonlight spreads
Jithe unhāçā sparśahī lobhasa
Saragama guñjata zharato pāūsa
Phulāsārakhe tithe phulāve tuzhe ni māzhe jiṇe
Where even hot sunlight's touch is inviting
Humming musical scales, the rain streams
There, like a flower, should flower your life and mine
Makhamālīcī jithalī hiravaḷa
Muḷī na sukate sumanāṃçe daḷa
Avakāśācyā tārā cheḍī vārā mandapaṇe
Where the grass is of velvet
Never dries any petal of flowers
At intervals, wind plucks strings softly
Priya-nayanāṃtīla bhāva vāçatā
Çukūna disāvā mora nāçatā
Dūra-deśīçe bulabula yāve kadhīmadhī pāhuṇe
Reading emotion in my beloved's eyes
Accidentally, I should glimpse a peacock dancing
Faraway lands' nightingale guest should come occasionally
In an ideal city, one deficiency threatens the illusion of perfect harmony.

Lyrics
Sarayū-tīrāvarī
Ayodhyā Manu-nirmita nagarī
On Sarayū's bank
Ayodhyā, a city founded by Manu
Tyā nagarīcyā viśālatevara
Ubhyā rāhilyā vāstū sundara
Madhuna vāhatī mārga samāntara
Ratha vājī gaja pathika çālatī naṭunī tyāñcyāvarī
Upon that city's expanse
Rise up beautiful edifices
Amidst them flow parallel roads
Chariots, horses, elephants, pedestrians travel along them, decorated
Gharāgharāvara ratna-toraṇeṃ
Avatībhaṃvatī ramya upavaneṃ
Tyāṃta raṅgatī nṛtya-gāyaneṃ
Mṛdaṅga vīṇā nitya nādatī Alakā-nagarīparī
On house after house, jewel-awnings
Everywhere around, pleasant parks
Where are performed dances and songs
Drum and lute perpetually sound, as in Alakā city
Striyā pati-vratā puruṣahi dhārmika
Putra upazatī nija-kula-dīpaka
Nṛśaṃsa nā kuṇi kuṇi nā nāstika
Atṛptīçā kuṭhe na vāvara nagarīṃ gharīṃ antarīṃ
Women observant of husbands, men moral too
Children are born to illuminate their families
No one cruel, no one irresponsible
Discontent has nowhere to loiter in city, in home, or in heart
Ikṣvāku-kula-kīrti-bhūṣaṇa
Rājā Daśaratha dharma-par'āyaṇa
Tyā nagarīçeṃ karito rakṣaṇa
Gṛhīṃ Candrasā nagarīṃ Indrasā Sūrya zasā saṃgarīṃ
Ornament to the Ikṣvāku clan's fame
King Daśaratha whose course is moral
Gives protection to that city
At home, moonlike; in the city, rainlike; sunlike in battle!
Daśarathāsa tyā tighī bhāryā
Suvaṃśajā tyā sumukhī āryā
Siddha patīcyā sevā-kāryā
Bahu-śrutā tyā rūpa-śālinī atula-prabhā sundarī
Daśaratha has those three wives
Born of good dynasties, nice-faced, noble
Expert at the work of serving their husband
Much educated, they're figure-endowed, incomparably radiant beauties
Tighī striyāñcyā prīta saṃgamīṃ
Tinhī lokiṃçeṃ sukha ye dhāmīṃ
Eka uṇeṃ paṇa gṛhasth'āśramīṃ
Putr'odaya paṇa azunī navhatā prītīcyā ambarīṃ
Through the three women's friendly unity
All three worlds' comfort comes to the home
Yet one thing's lacking in the householder status
There was not yet a child's rise in the sky of love
Śalya eka teṃ Kausalyesī
Dise Sumitrā sadā udāsī
Kaika Kaikayī karī navasāsī
Daśarathāsahī vyathā eka tī chaḷite abhyantarī
That was the Kosala woman's one wound
Sumitrā was always seen despondent
The Kekaya woman made numerous pledges
Daśaratha too this one worry troubled within
Rāja-saukhya teṃ saukhya janāṃçeṃ
Ekaça cintana lakṣa manāṃçeṃ
Kāya kāza yā saukhya-dhanāçeṃ
Kalpa-tarūlā phūla nase kāṃ vasanta saralā tarī
The king's happiness is happiness for the people
Only one obsession for a hundred thousand minds
What use is this happiness or property?
Why has the wishing-tree no flower although spring has gone by?
