What started as a fast paced, highly serialised drama of two star crossed lovers has slowly dwindled away into a slow, disappointing and commercialised venture.
Mann Mayal follows the love story of the fun loving and naive Mannu and the solemn Salauddin. The show began on a powerful note, banking on the star power of the talented star cast and strong story line. Initially, it seemed that the writer and director would deal with the taboo of love marriage and differences in socio-economic social classes.
However, all that was slowly kept aside when Mannu was forced to marry the wretched Mikail and Salauddin went on to become a successful businessman. Henceforth everything has been nothing but sheer disappointment.
Our shows are known for their rich content and distinct storylines, however the message being sent out by Mann Mayal is nothing but disheartening. Mannu's character changed from a light hearted girl to a stoic, helpless damsel in distress. When compared to powerful female protagonists like in Diyar eDil, ZGH and humsafar, Mannu's character fails to impress. The writers seems to be a opinion that once a girl is married her life revolves around her husband and it is her duty to put up with everything from abuse to drug addiction. It was saddening to see how Mannu is happy to put up with everything, if only that saves her from the stigma of a divorce. While it is true that our society is unforgiving of the girl when it comes to divorce the messages of TV shows is to negate away from such taboos.
The show reinforces the harsh realities of the lack of support available to girls from their own household. Her family, while at the face of it, seems to be loving, they have done nothing to help their daughter from this mess. It's upsetting to see how girls once married off are left on their own to fight their battle.
I wish the writers had tried to address these problems and created a powerful independent female character rather than a damsel in distress who is stupidly in love with her teacher.
