It borrows words from many languages primarily Persian, Hindi, and Arabic. For instance, a pineapple is called "annanas" in both French and Urdu. The Urdu language dates back to the Mughal Empire. Urdu is the official language of Pakistan, sharing its position with English. The importance of Urdu in the Muslim world has been portrayed in the Holy cities in Saudia Arab, where most signage is written in Arabic, English, and Urdu. In Pakistan, Urdu varies from province to province as it borrows words, proverbs and phonetics from indigenous languages such as Punjabi, Pashto, Balochi and Sindhi. The alphabet is an extension to the Arabic alphabet and is written right to left. Urdu holds the largest collection of works on Islamic literature and Sharia. Many popular movie songs are also written in Urdu. Urdu is the premium language for poetry, Sher o Shari (proverbs), Ghazal (musical poetry), Nazm (objective poetry), and Naat's (poetry in religious praise) all over South Asia. |
