They think that their chief queen is an (for lack of better word) impure lady and hence it is not good for the state. This makes him take the decision of abandoning his pregnant wife(contrary to popular opinion, Ram ji very well knew that Seeta was pregnant when he decided to abandon her) He preferred his duty as a king over his duty as a husband. That is another sacrifice of his

But again this is all in Uttar Kand, which is most likely an extrapolation

One more thing, there is no Agni Pareeksha in Valmiki Ramayana, it is actually worse, post freeing Seeta, Ramji asks her to leave since he wasn't ready to accept a wife which was in custody of someone else and he was not ready to believe that Ravan could have controlled himself so long, he hence said that Seeta is free to go wherever she wants.

Seeta was devastated hearing this and said she would commit suicide, it was Agnidah and not Pareeksha. She wanted to die, but since she was pure, hence Agni appeared for her and testified stating he can't engulf someone as pure and pious as Seeta. Ram then happily accepted her

It's just sad that women even Sitaji had to suffer for no fault of hers. smiley6Infact she was pativrata but still.

The society even today is no different. Always blame on women

I think Sita gave back well to the accusations of Rama. She entered fire seeking refuge but also asks fire god to protect her if she was indeed pure . So I think Sita protected her self respect before the world and thus Ram accepted her back . In that sense we can consider it agni-pariksha . Agni gives testimony to her chastity .

Also agreed the whole behaviour of lord rama during agni-pariksha feels similar to uttar kand . Makes me think that even if uttar-kand were to be an extrapolation but when it comes to his reputation , honour , before the society he will not mind abandoning Sita smiley6

Which version of Valmiki Ramayan do u refer to ?Any specific translation ?

Yes it is from Ram Charit Manas of Tulsidas. That story of Chaya Seeta isn't old

@ I won't call it as modern day divorce, it was more like Triple Talaq (given once) which government has banned. I completely agree on this thing, his statement was very outrageous. Like he could have said return to your father, but go to Bharat, Laksham, Sugreev, Vibhishan seemed so terrible

Yes she was deeply hurt and responded that she doesn't need to go anywhere and will self immolate if not with Ram, and went for Atmadah, the testimony of Agni made it easy for Ram to accept. I give Ram a benefit of doubt here, maybe he knew that Seeta will decide to self immolate on such humiliation and then won't be burnt due to her purity, thereby people will start respecting her.

But this goes beyond doubt that when it comes to selecting between family honor (till now he wasn't the king, so he didn't even have the RajDharma to follow) and wife, he would chose former.

I have read two translations. The critical edition translation by Bibek Debroy (English) and Geeta Press (Hindi)

Also found one old translation of Uttar Kand by some Mutt in Hindi will share that link

Why would he fight and free her from Ravana if he didn't want to accept Sitaji

Oh yeah Divorce has to be mutual right . This was more a unilateral decision..

@bold I think Ram was very diplomatic over here. He never from his own mouth asked for an agni-pariksha from Sita but used such words that he knew will lead to Sita doing that . Somehow it's a cycle . Sita during her haran deliberately used harsh words that forced Laxman to leave her alone I feel.

Some dialogues of Ramayan r too disturbing to read n digest. smiley44

Do share the uttarkand link whenever u find time. I have not been able to find good resources for that .

Because his family honor was hampered when Ravan abducted her, now by getting her back, he regained the family honor (that is what he says atleast)

Laxman and Sita were always at loggerheads there . Some parts of Siya ke Ram were good some really bad. I lost interest mid way and left. . They especially ruined Sita-Laxman bonding

They showed Mithila and Raja Janaka beautifully . Explored Gargi's character . Showed the story of Shanta and Rishyashringa , addressed questions like if a woman is this learned like Gargi can she be tied in the institution of marriage?

Was Sita a liability or asset during the vanvas ? Saving the ashwamedha yagya horse etc etc . Lots of creative liberty though .

I didn't watch if after getting to know it was based on Devdutt Patnaik. The guy is way self obsessed (has blocked me on Twitter)

But seems they gave some good elements too. I didn't like that they were making Mandavi grayish

Gargi thing was good that they showed

Thanks for the information did not know that! All that just doesn’t make me respect him then. He went though the ends of the earth to get her back and didn’t even trust that she was pure? Toh phir faida kya hua? Then the people who question his worthiness as a god are right then. If he’s God (or avatar of God) then he should stand up for right and justice which is what he’s known for, this just leaves a sour taste for me. Sorry but as a woman this irks me a lot that despite all that she still had to prove herself. And him taking the role of a king more serious of a husband and father? That’s what it doesn’t sit right with me, he performed his duty as a son so well but failed as a husband then in my eyes.
