Part 4
Neil and Bobby were going for their class but they found only two of them were present there. So teacher cancelled the class. Both of them had nothing to do so they planned to go to library.
“Kya yaar! Jab se ye college annual day celebrations ka announcement hua hai tab se koi class theek se lag hi nahi rahi.” Neil shared his disappointment.
“Yes, everyone is busy in practicing for the event they are participating in. Drama, sports, theater, music, dance all departments are overcrowded. Everywhere auditions/ practices/ rehearsals are going on. No one is interested in studying.” Bobby shared the facts.
“Hey! Why don’t we go for dance practice? I mean the main event of the college is obviously the grand dance at the end. Each and every student will be going attending that dance. We didn’t participate in first year because we didn’t have dates so why don’t we start asking out some girls from now only….koi na koi to haan bol hi degi tab tak. Is bar toh mujhe college dance bilkul miss nahi karna.” Bobby suggested.
“Tu puchh le jisko bhi puchhna hai. Main to is saal bhi nahia aunga. Because I only want to ask one girl, Minni. Aur wo to kabhi mujhe sapne mein bhi haan nahi bolegi so its better I should sit at home.” Neil replied and as they both were engrossed in their conversation, they didn’t pay attention on the turn and before they knew, they collided with someone.
“Hey! Morons! Watch out. Aankhen nahi hain kya? Oh yes shayad andhe hi honge dono. Itne bade bade specs jo laga rakhe hain.” Preet shouted at them while getting up.
“Look at them. Such losers. College mein na in jaiso ki entry hi bann ho jani chahiye.” Simmy also taunted them.
Neil and Bobby were highly embarrassed. They felt bad when everyone around them started laughing on them. They were feeling humiliated when one voice stopped all the laughter and scolded those who were making fun.
“Shut up you guys! Is this the way to talk to your fellow students? So what if they are not cool like us. We should treat them respect. Look their books and notes have fallen on ground but nobody helped them, all are busy making fun. Shame on all of you. Such shallow people.” Minni scolded everyone and also her friends Simmy and Preet. Then she helped Neil and Bobby in picking up their books and said sorry on behalf of her friends.
Neil and Bobby were thankful to her. “See, Minni is not like others. She will not judge you for your looks and attire. You should confess your feelings to her.” Bobby suggested as they went inside the library.
“Really? You think she will understand my feelings?” Neil asked getting hopeful for the first time.
“Yes of course, you have your way with words. I am confident that once you decide to talk to her. You will convey your feelings beautifully. You must ask her out for college dance.” Bobby encouraged him.
“But I don’t know how to dance, and I am not going to that dance club for learning. You know all will laugh at us there.” Neil stated the obvious problem.
“Aree toh kya hua. Everything is possible in today’s time. We will learn by online classes.” Bobby had an idea.
“Ye to kafi achha idea hai. Then its decided then. From tomorrow we will spend free periods in learning dance from online classes then once we will be confident enough, we will ask out girls.” Neil was feeling very optimistic.
Ashok’s hard work was paying off slowly and Neil was getting confident and smart with each passing day. His stutter had improved a lot and Ashok had work on several behavioral issues together with psychology professor to really turn around the boy. His dressing sense, the way of carrying himself etc was changing and Bobby was happy to notice such positive changes in his friend. Their online dance classes were also going fine. Both of them were practicing couple dance moves with each other imagining the other as their dream girl. Neil had started distributing his notes for other students as they were missing classes and Neil knew that all of them will need notes to catch with the syllabus once this celebration is over. It had given him good opportunity to earn some money in exchange of his notes. He had earned decent amount of money to buy good clothes for himself. This time he had opened a bank account and deposited all money in it for protecting it from his evil family. All was going well. For the first time Neil was looking forward to this annual day celebration.
Neil was now ready to ask Minni for college dance. He took deep breath and went in search of Minni in the canteen. There he witnessed some senior named Rahul was already asking out Minni for date and dance. Neil stopped breathing, praying that Minni will say no but to his utter disappointment she said yes to Rahul. Neil was heartbroken after that.
“Hey! Don’t you want to come for online dance classes today?” Bobby asked seeing Neil.
“No use of that now. All my efforts are waste now.” Neil answered sadly.
“What happened? Hey! You were going to ask Minni today. Did she say no to you?” Bobby guessed.
“Worse, she said yes to some senior guy Rahul.” Neil clarified.
“I was late. I should have asked her earlier. You were right, I shouldn’t have delayed so much. Now she will go with someone else. Now what is the use of all these dance classes. Looks like I will be sitting alone in my house this year also.” Neil sighed in disappointment.
“Hey! You will go to college dance and that’s final.” Ashok declared after he had listened to their conversation.
Bobby and Neil both turned around and found Ashok. “But Minni is going with someone else.” Neil informed once again.
“So what? Who said the girl will only dance with her date. She may come with anyone but there is no rule that she will dance only with that boy. You may ask her for dance on that day also.
Neil felt there is still little ray of hope left for him. So, he continued his dance practice and the sessions with psychology professor. Finally, the D Day came. College fest’s last day when most popular singing competition was going to be held in morning and then and in evening the much-awaited college dance for which everyone was waiting eagerly. In the morning everyone was gathering in the auditorium to see singing competition.
“Neil, the singing competition committee member was asking about you.” Bobby came running to Neil.
“What! What does he want from me?” Neil shrugged and both of them went to find out.
“Are you Neil Oberoi? Where were you? First you enroll your name at the last hour and now you are not even giving your details. I will need that when I announce your name on stage.” Committee member told them and Neiland Bobby were stunned.
“You are participating? You didn’t even tell me.” Bobby was upset.
“Arre yaar! Mujhe bhi abhi pata chal raha hai. Maine apna naam nahi diya.” Neil was confused.
“Offo! Jaldi batao tum participate kar rahe ho ya nahi? I don’t have all the time.” Committee member was irritated now.
“Yes, of course he will participate and that’s final.” Neil and Bobby both turned to look back to find Ashok announcing his decision.
Neil pulled Ashok aside with him and requested, “Please sir, ye aapne kya kiya? Main aur stage par gaana….kaise ho payega ye?”
“Maine tumhe gaate hue suna hai. I am sure if you participate then you will win definitely. I knew you weren’t going to give your name on your own, so I did that.” Ashok explained.
“But sir…main kaise stage par sabke saamne…” Neil was nervous by just thinking about it.
“You are very talented Neil. You should have given your name to whole lots of competitions. I am just encouraging you to participate in singing and dancing. And you have made tremendous progress in our therapy sessions. I am confident that you can pull this up. Ye samajh lo maine jo tumhari itni help ki ye uski guru dakshina hai ye tumhe karna hi hoga.” Ashok tried to persuade him.
“No…sabke saamne toh possible nahi ho payega…I cant…mera toh naam announce hote hi log mujh par hasne lagenge.” Neil imagined himself in front of whole auditorium going all nervous and stuttering instead of singing. He had started sweating imagining the whole scenario.
“Mere pass ek idea hai sir. Agar kisi tarah ye ho jaye ki Neil sabko dekh paaye lekin Neil ka chehra kisi ko na dikhe, na hi iska naam pata chale toh shayad isko gaane ka confidence aa jaye stage par. You know like some anonymous singer.” Bobby suggested.
“Hmm! This is manageable. I can do this. That committee member is failing in his quarterly tests. I think I can offer him some grace marks to do this.” Ashok winked and gestured Neil to be ready for performance.

No Ashok is only a professor. 😆 not that much big twist and turn😆
