Part 3
Neil was at home completing his assignments and also making time table for upcoming exams. He knew once this college celebration will get over there will be no delay in exams and he cant afford to fail in them. His study was his only life saving medicine, his ticket for a bright future.
âHey stuttering tree! We are going out with our friends for some shopping. Till then you must clean my wardrobe.â Mickey informed Neil.
âShopping?â Neil wondered out loud.
âYes, there a week long college celebration. We ought to look cool.â Manmeet stated.
âCaâŚcanâŚIâŚccâŚcome too for shopâŚping?â
âYou! Now what would you do with new clothes?â Mickey laughed.
âSame here, I was thinking I havenât had any new clothes since longtime. And college fest is coming so may be I can buy some clothes too.â Neil answered nervously.
âAnd what made you think that we will spent money on you?â Manmeet shared an evil laugh with his brother.
âIt wont cost you. I have someâŚmoneyâŚsavedâŚ.from some odd jobsâŚI will buy from that and donât worry I will clean your wardrobe after that.â Neil dared to tell his plan.
âWhat? You got money? Where is your money. Mummy, come here. Look this weirdo has some money.â Mickey shouted and immediately after listening the word âmoneyâ Mrs. Sandhu came at lightening fast speed.
âWhat iss fokatchand ke pas paise kaha se aaye. Jarur mujhse hi churaye honge. Ae, paise nikaal kaha hain?â Mrs. Sandhu asked holding Neilâs collar.
âNo, that is my money. I have earned it from doing part time and several odd jobs after college hours.â Neil tried to defend himself and stop the all of them who had already started searching his room for money.
âHaan tune kamaye bhi hain toh kya? Tujhe itne saal jo khilaya pilaya hai uska karza samajh ke chuka de.â Mrs. Sandhu replied and before Neil could have stopped them she found the money in the drawer of his study table and grabbed it.
The evil mother and her equally evil sons laughed together at Neil and his helplessness. All of them went out, Mrs.Sandhu to kitty party and both her sons for shopping leaving Neil behind in the house to clean their wardrobe and curse his fate.
Neil sat on his chair with a thump like he was defeated in some battle. He felt like crying, pulling his hair out in frustration and end this pathetic life but he didnât do any of that. His tears had dried long ago in childhood only. He couldnât do self harm because he had promised his dying parents on hospital bed that he will look after himself. So the only thing that gave him some relief was singing. Whenever pain crossed the threshold, he used to sing.
Hum na samjhe the bat itani si
Khawab sheeshe ke duniya pathar ki
Hum na samjhe the bat itani si
Khawab sheese ke duniya pathar kee
Hum na samjhe the bat itani si
Aarzoo humne ki to hum paye
Aarzoo humne ki toh hum paye
Roshani sath lai thi saye
Saye gehre the roshani halki
Hum na samjhe the bat itani si
Khawab sheese ke duniya pathar ki
Hum na samjhe the bat itani si
Neil was singing and now accepting his fate for the umpteenth time he had started doing household chores as ordered by Sandhu family. He hadnât finished yet but he heard a knock on the door. He went to answer it.
âProfessor Ashok! You here?â Neil was surprised to see him.
âYes, I was enjoying evening tea in my balcony when I heard some loud voices then I saw Sandhu family went out of the house.â Ashok started the conversation.
âOh, so you were worried about me? I hope you didnât thought they murdered me in cold blood.â Neil let out a small laugh.
Ashok laughed too, âNo, I came here toâŚ.â Ashok started but Neil interrupted him.
âTo check on me, whether I am ok or not. Well, thatâs so kind of you professor. But please donât worry about me. Sandhus are evil, yes, but I donât think they will hurt me and then spent money on dressing my injuries and risk their chance to lose their free servant.â Neil shared his honest opinion.
âActually, I came here to find out whether its really you who was singing?â Ashok completed his sentence finally.
âWhâŚwhatâŚyâŚyouâŚhe..heard me..sinâŚging?â Neil stammered.
âYes, and what a voice you have! You are such a talented boy.â Ashok complemented.
âTh..thnâŚthank you.â Neil stammered again.
âHey! Have you noticed, you donât stammer when you sing.â Ashok was excited on his observation.
âUh..yesâŚyes may be bec..because there is no sttâŚstress of communicating with others. I always sing when I am alone.â Neil clarified.
âItâs a great news. It means your stammering problem is not kind of disease which needs to be treated medically. I think its more a psychological problem. HmmâŚ.I can understand now. Those Sandhu monsters have always treated you badly. You feel underconfident and anxious. They never allowed your personality to shine. If we can work on this issue then may be your stammering will go permanently.â Ashok explained.
âReally?â Neil asked hopefully.
âBut who am I kidding? They wont allow me to go for behavioral therapy and I cant afford it also.â Neil was disappointed the very next minute.
âHey! I have an idea. You donât need to visit any shrink for that. We have Professor Bhatt, our collegeâs psychology professor. I will talk to him. I am sure he will have deeper knowledge on this issue and will be able to help you in college only. We both will work on your personality development. Your so called family doesnât need to know about it. I guess half n hour daily will be enough for it.â Ashok shared his idea.
âReally? Will that be possible?â Neilâs eyes twinkled with hope again.
âYes, I am sure my boy. It is possible. We will start working from tomorrow.â Ashok assured.
âAnd I also think that you should sing more often. Come on, you are one powerhouse of talent. Why hide it from everyone?â Ashok advised.
âNo way! I cant sing in front of others. I cant even stand properly in front of them then singing is like a dream. I donât want to them another chance to make fun of me.â Neil replied and Ashok though not convinced but decided to let it go for now. Neil had agreed for therapy so they need to take baby steps and deal with one thing at a time.

After few days in college, Neil noticed Mini was not her usual self today. She was with her friends but she was lost in some thoughts as if trying to figure out solution of some problem. Neil wanted to ask her whats her problem was and whether he can offer any solution but like always he couldnât even dream of going to her directly then asking about her problems was impossible but as usual he couldnât sit there when his dream girl was worried over something. He thought he will write another note for her today. May be she will feel relaxed that someone is there who cares for her, thinks about her.
So he jotted down few lines on pink note and went to keep it in her locker. He looked around and noticed no one was there. He quickly moved towards girls locker room area and was about to slip the note into Minniâs locker when professor caught him.
âNeil, you here? What are you doing in girls locker room that too like this, hiding and snooping around?â Ashok inquired.
âSir aaâŚ.aapâŚyaaâŚyaahan?â Neil stammered nervously.
âYes, I noticed you coming in this direction and I was about to call you but you were behaving weird and then you turned in girls locker room.â Ashok asked suspiciously.
âNothingâŚIâŚwas juâŚjustâŚâ Neil tried to make some excuse.
âNo use of lying now. I saw you were trying to put something in that locker. Show me what you are hiding behind in your hand.â Ashok now asked sternly and Neil was scared of getting caught. Moreover he didnât want to lie to Ashok. He was his mentor and he has been making tremendous progress with his personality and behavioural problems under his guidance.
Neil nervously brought note in front of him and Ashok snatched it at once. He read it and Neil was expecting scolding from him but instead he smiled at him.
âWow! Neil Oberoi, how many hidden talents have you got actually. This is beautiful, the lines, the way you have put it-
Khayalo mein uljho na tum is qadar
Sawalo se jujho na yun darbadar
Jo sochlo to dhund logi tum jawab
Hai mujhko yakeen to tum khud kyu ho bekhabar
âAnd may I know who is the lucky girl for whom you have written it?â Ashok asked after reading it.
âMmmâŚMinniâŚke liye likha hai.â Neil answered while blushing.
âWhoa! You like that girlâŚright? Aree ye chupchupkar notes kya likh rahe ho. Ask her out sometime.â Ashok suggested and winked.
âAsk her out! She is queen of this college and I am nobody. She probably is not aware of my existence in this college.â Neil stated sadly.
âHey! Donât be sad. And what did we learn in these few days? Donât ever think less about yourself. People will respect you when you will respect yourself. You are such a talented guy. Have some confidence in yourself.â Ashok encouraged.
Neil felt nice but he was not sure how to approach her. âThanks for motivating but I am not ready to go in front of her and confess my feelings.â
âIts ok boy. I can understand. But you have to say it someday.â Ashok patted on Neilâs shoulder and left from there.
