Part 2

As professor Ashok came in class, everyone stopped talking and become attentive. Professor Ashok was students’ favourite. Neil also liked him a lot. He always gave him that protective guardian type vibe. He never missed his lectures.

“So class, that’s all for today. Tomorrow I want your assignment. Its very important for your final scores. Hope everyone completes it on time tomorrow.” Professor Ashok dismissed the class.

“Hey stammering tower! You heard professor? We want our assignments complete by tomorrow morning.” Mickey and Manmeet threw their books on Neil and started to move out. They always used to make Neil do all their classwork since childhood.

“But I already have pend….pending work because full week I was busy do….doing your work. Now it will take me whole night to complete my own assign…assi…assignment then how will I complete yours?” Neil argued.

“Thats your problem Nerdy Oberoi! We want our assignment complete anyhow by tomorrow.” Mickey hissed threatening him.

“Do we have a problem here?” Professor Ashok answered before Neil could say anything.

“No professor, nothing wrong. We brothers were just chitchatting.” Manmeet made excuse.

“Oh, its better be only a chitchat then. Because From what I heard you were threatening him to complete your assignment which is not a good idea. You see, I will be checking your assignment personally and if I found that someone else has written it for you then I can guarantee you both gonna be sitting in this class next year too.” Ashok made his stand very clear.

“Oh..no…sir we will complete our assignments ourselves only. We want to get passed this year sir.” Mickey and Manmeet said and went away from there seeing they will not be able to bully Neil now in professor’s presence.

“Thanks.” Neil uttered giving a small smile to Ashok.

“Your cousins…aren’t they? Why you let them bully you? If I had not come then surely they would have made you do their assignments.” Ashok asked.

“They are like this since always.” Neil plainly replied.

“I don’t know whether you have noticed or not but I have just recently taken a rented apartment near your house and from what I have observed, your cousins, infact your whole family doesn’t treat you well. Do you need any help?” Ashok asked in concerned.

“Yes, I have noticed you in neighborhood. In fact its great, I was thinking that may be I can come at your place sometimes for extra classes.” Neil asked hopefully.

“Of course you can come anytime but first answer me, do you need any kind of help against your family members?” Ashok asked again.

“No, I mean….I ..kn…know they are not gr..great family but they took me in when my mom dad died. They ..g…ga…gave me food and…she..shelter. I don’t want any action against them and its just a matter of few years now. When I complete my studies and become independent I will leave that place once and for all.” Neil sighed as he shared his plan.

Ashok smiled at Neil and ruffled his hair affectionately. He really liked this sincere boy. He then laughed a little at the situation.

“What are you laughing at?” Neil was curious.

“Nothing just….your situation….it reminded me of that children’s story. You know, cindrella and her evil aunt and cousins.” Ashok shared then laughed some more.

Neil also couldn’t help but laugh with him, “If I am cindrella then who are you…my fairy Godmother?”

“Hey! What you laughing at? Share the joke.” Bobby joined them. Bobby was Neil’s only true friend. He was a geek like him too.

“You guys carry on. I have another class.” Professor Ashok left two friends to chitchat.

“Attention students! As you all know our annual day is approaching. We have a week long celebration plans this year and lots of competitions. There is going to be every fun extra curricular activity. So, all the clubs be it theatre, fine arts, singing, dance, science, fashion, sports etc be ready for the fun.” As the announcement was made in the college, all the students begin cheering, whistling and clapping with joy. It was this time of the year that every student waited. It was not only an opportunity to showcase one’s talent but also great setting for hook ups, fun and some carefree celebration with your friends.

“Wow! I am so excited for the fashion show.” Definitely I am gonna win.” Priya said excitedly among her friends.

“Huh! Dream on Bimbo. Hamari Minni ke rehte koi jeet hi nahi sakta.” Preet challenged and the girls started their banter.

“Bro, I am gonna smash that Rohit this time in badminton match and may be this time Minni will be impressed with me.” Mickey said day dreaming.

“No way, I gonna win Mr. Fashionista this year and Minni will be definitely Ms. Fashionista, will asked her out on date then.” Manmeet was weaving his own dream world.

“Ye sab competitions chhodo yaar main to apne college dance ke liye excited hoon. Already thinking of asking one those Sandhu boys for dance.” Simmy chimed in.

“Minni tu kiske sath jayegi college dance?” Preet asked getting excited.

“Arre isko to har ladka le jana chahega dance mein.” Simmy stated.

“But who will you chose? Pichle saal ki tarah wo Aryan?” Preet guessed.

“No way! It was such a terrible experience with him. All night he continued to brag about himself and his so called royal family. I was tired of listening stories of his riches. He is a snob. He thinks he can impress anyone because of his royal family background and wealth.” Minni shared her experience.

“Then who?” Simmy asked curiously.

“Lets see….I was thinking may be this year he would show enough courage to ask me out.” Minni shrugged her shoulders.

“He…who?” Simmy asked getting confused.

“Arree she must meant her secret admirer.” Preet clarified.

“Oh Mr. Gumnaam jo secretly Minni ko wo pink notes send karta hai? Simmy asked.

“Yes, the very same. Ever since I have come in this college, every boy seems to be interested in being my friend or rather more than friends. They give me all kinds of looks, some yearning, some lost, some dreamy and some even lewd. They just smitten over by this…this outer me…the beauty, the popular girl but no one has ever tried to know the inner me…the girl…Minni. And this boy, this secret admirer. He seems to understand me even better than me somehow. That day when I was upset because I had argument with my parents over something. No one knew my mood was off. I was covering up well. Even you two didn’t notice but I don’t know how this boy came to know? That day for the first time I found that pink note in my college locker. I still remember what it said-

“Aaj udaas lagta hai din jo tum udaas ho

Hasi ka hai sath lekin gham ke pas ho.”

“Yeah! It was totally shayrana andaaz yaar. Like it touched my heart too.” Preet said dramatically.

Minni remembered another note, “Yes and that one note when I was nervous before going for final round of college beauty pageant. It said-

“Tumhare kadmo tale to aasma ke sitare hain

Phir shak kaisa khudpe, tumhare aage sab pheeke nazare hain”

“I am telling you girls, he is the one for me. He seems different from others.” Minni concluded.

“Yes, but ye Mr. Gumnaam kabhi samne se aakar tumhe date ke liye puchhne ki himmat kyu nahi karta?” Simmy asked the important question.

“That’s the problem yaar Simmy….thats the problem.” Minni repeated in disappointment and went away with her friends.

“Kyunki agar main saamne aaya toh I am sure you will reject me.” Neil muttered to himself as he came out of pillar’s shadow where he was standing and Minni’s and her friends conversation peaked his interest.

“Sahi to bol rahi thi yaar wo. Tu bata kyu nahi deta Minni ko kit u hi hai wo secret admirer.” Bobby asked who has also listened everything.

“Usko dekh yaar. She is so smart and beautiful. So perfect, The QUEEN. And look at me. No one even knows my name properly except you. Some call me bookworm, some weirdo, some shitty hair, some electric pole. I am sure she wouldn’t want to be associated with me.” Neil sighed in disappointment.

“But yaar, she seems different from others. You should atleast try.” Bobby encouraged him.

“But if she reacted like all others than this little dream of mine will be broken and I don’t want that. So I am happy being her secret admirer.” Neil concluded.
