Part 10
Mini had realized she has done mistake by pushing him away from her. She didn’t want to do it but couldn’t help. It all happened in nervousness and on an impulse. She didn’t mean to hurt him. She wanted to apologize but when she saw anger in his eyes she couldn’t gather up courage and besides this she also had her own self esteem to nurture. And she didn’t want to bring up that topic again. She still was not in that comfort zone to share physical proximity with him. “Why all those things are so important for him? Why they just can’t be like friends forever? Why he wants to do all those..things…strange things…with her?” Mini wondered for the third time now. She wanted to clarify all that with Neil but whenever she crossed path with him, he looked away, hurt, from her earlier behavior. The initial awkwardness was back in their relationship with that extra mattress on which Neil used to sleep on the floor.
“Why are you sleeping there?” Mini remembered she had asked him timidly that night. “I don’t think we should be sleeping together when you hate my touch. It hurts me every time when you push me away like I was forcing myself on you.” Neil had replied and without even bothering to see the tears in her eyes, he had turned around and slept. Mini had prayed that may be he will forget everything after sometime. But five days had passed and he was still the same….disconnected...aloof…indifferent. He was talking to her normally but she could feel he was constantly lost in his thoughts. Like he was present with her but was still far away.

“Mr. Sharma, you still haven’t prepared the agreement for the house. I will come on Monday with my wife. Please get it done by then.” Neil was speaking on his phone. His words caught Mini’s attention. “What are you saying?” She asked. “Mr. Sharma is property broker. I had asked him to find a house for me…for us in Delhi.” Neil answered in his emotionless voice like he was doing since few days.
“House in Delhi? But why? You told me you live there in PG with some other college friends. Then why you want to shift in new house?” Mini questioned. “I was a bachelor back then but now I cant stay in PG along with you. We will need a separate house.” Neil answered casually not getting her point. “And I see you still haven’t packed your stuff. We will be leaving early morning on Monday so better keep it ready today itself.” Neil suggested.
“What…what do you mean? Why should I pack my stuff? You are going to join your college for MBA right? You will be going there alone…am I…am I..supposed to come with you?” Mini asked in confusion. “Yes, I was going there for college but …we are married now. So definitely you will come with me. How can I leave you here alone…I will be going there for two years.” Neil said as he was shocked why Mini was confused. Was she thinking he will leave her in Patiala for whole two years and why she is shocked? Shouldn’t she be happy about it? He looked in her eyes and with heavy heart he asked her, “Minnu, you don’t want to come with me?”
“NO. You never told me this before. I don’t want to go from here. How can you assume things on your own?” Mini asked him. Neil ran his hands in his hair in frustration. “Minnu, do you realize what are you saying? Two years….without me….how will you manage here alone. And I didn’t tell you because I thought its obvious that you are my wife, you will come with me.”
“That’s your problem. You never ever care about me, my feelings. You just announce your judgments, reach to your own conclusions and assume a lot of things. I don’t want to come with you. You will be busy in college whole day, what will I do there…in a new city,,,new environment…between strangers…what will I do? With great difficulty I have moved on from my place, my comfort zone to this new life, new household and now you again want me to start afresh. I cant do this.” Mini argued.
“Whats wrong in this? Our relationship is already strained and you want me to leave you here. Tell me how everything will sort out. We need to spend more and more time together to bridge the distances between us but you are hell bent on distancing yourself from me. Why don’t you get this Minnu?” Neil shouted on her.
“You don’t get this. Its not easy for me. How should I make you understand…” Mini started walking in the room to think of something to relate her situation to it. “…yes, you do gardening right? If you plant a sapling in new place and without giving it time to adjust you again uproot it and replant it in new place then…what will happen? It will not grow Neil…you are doing exactly same thing with me. Changes overwhelms me. I cant keep up with it every now and then. Besides this, my whole life, my friends, my family, my childhood, my memories…all are here. I cant start a new life anywhere else leaving all this behind.” Mini tried to explain.
“Why its always about your life, your feelings, your perception. I have done so much for this relationship…to make it work and all I got in return is just your apathy. But….but you just don’t want to give me any chance…you don’t hesitate even for a second before breaking my heart.” Neil was hurt from her behavior.That day when she had pushed him away he had thought she cant hurt him anymore now. She has reached her limit but no…she has done it again. First she didn’t want him anywhere near her and now she doesn’t even want to live with him. His injured ego roared again with new found energy and hissed in his ears, “Let her be here if she doesn’t want to come. Stop begging her. Have some self respect. Prove her that you are not dying to live with her. You have done enough now let her make efforts. You have covered the half distance now let her come to you covering remaining half distance. Only then, this relationship will be worth of all the sufferings that you have endured.
“I am not leaving Patiala. I am not coming with you.” Mini repeated when she saw him silent and lost in thoughts. “FINE! Don’t come with me. Yahan rehna hai toh shauk se raho.” Neil agreed finally. “Yahan nahi rehna.” Mini said nervously. “Hmm” Neil looked at her in confusion. “I mean is ghar mein nahi rehna. I wanted to talk to you about this since few days but you were not talking to me properly. You will go to Delhi. Your maa doesn’t like me enough. What will I do here? I cant keep fighting with her all the time.” Mini explained. “What is going on in your mind?” Neil asked irritated from her thought process now.
“I want to go back to my home…my father’s home.” Mini clarified. “And what about maa? You are daughter in law of Oberoi family. You don’t want to come with me then at least look after her till I return.” Neil reasoned. “She doesn’t like me. I have a life of my own. I want to enjoy it instead of arguing with her. You will enjoy your college life in Delhi just like old times. Even I want to live my carefree life till then.” Mini defended herself.
“Bilkul theek hai….fair point. Waise bhi hum tumhare lagte kaun hai jiski parwaah hogi tumhe,…jiski yaad ayegi..theek hai…its decided then. On Monday I will be leaving for Delhi and before that I will drop you at your home.” Neil said as he fought back his angst. Right now he wanted to shook her vigorously and ask her how dare she refused to come with him or stay in his house. How come she doesn’t give any importance to their relationship. But he controlled his emotions somehow. Right now he was just disappointed with her. Why she is refusing to grow up, to grow out of her dream bubble? When she will embrace her new identity…as his wife…as his family..and the responsibilities that comes with it? When she will understand all this?

“What? She is not going with you?” Shakuntala asked with shock written over all her face. “No, she doesn’t want a change of place again. She said she wont be able to adjust.” Neil sighed as he answered his maa. “Oh that means that chorni will trouble me every now and then.” Shakuntala was horrified by the thought. “No, she wants to go back to her father’s house.”Neil informed.
Shakuntala was silent for sometime. She could feel her son was sad. She was also worried now. After that incident where Mini defended Neil,Shakuntala had thought that their affection towards each other is growing but Mini don’t want to go with Neil…this may affect their relationship but it’s a mutual decision of husband wife. Who was she to interfere? “May be, everything will be fine with time.” She thought.
But she could not see sad face of her son. “Kabhi kabhi jo pyar nahi kar paata wo duriyan kar deti hai. Chahe kitna bhi kareebi rishta ho, duriyan bhi jaruri hoti hain jisse us rishte ki ahmiyat pata chal sake.”Shakuntala held Neil’s hand in assurance. Neil hugged her in response and sent a silent prayer so that Shakuntala’s words come true.

Mini was very happy as today she is going back to her father’s house….her true home, where she had spent her childhood, innumerable memories resides there…sweet, sour, fun filled. She going to get her life back. She will roam around with friends, play cricket and what not. No one will stop her. She was excitedly packing all her stuff unaware of the pair of eyes which were looking at her with longing.
It was getting difficult for Neil to control his emotions as the time for him to go was coming near. He wanted to take Minnu with him but he knew her decision. He wanted to at least kiss her or hold her close for sometime but he was afraid of her reaction. Every time she breaks his heart by pushing him away and right now he was already in emotional mess. He wont be able to take her rejection again. He was also angry on her as she was not even feeling sad or anything because of their separation. She was just excited to go back. Looks like she wont even miss him and this thought was eating him from inside fueling his anger more.
“Make it quick. I don’t have all the time. I have to leave for Delhi too.” He almost shouted on her. “Ok…ok…no need to shout. I am ready. Lets go.” Mini replied as she picked up her bags with difficulty as they were heavy. She looked at him for help but instead of helping he turned around without even looking back at her. Mini gasped and carried her bags somehow.
"Aye ruko...ye toh batao ki wapas kab aaoge? I mean semister break mein toh wapas aa sakte ho na kuch dino ke liye?" Mini asked. "No, semister break mein bhi waps nahi aunga." Neil replied angrily. "Phir...wapas kab..." Mini repeated her question again as finally it dawned that he will be away from her for two whole years. "Ab jab tum khud bulaogi tabhi wapas aaunga." Neil replied looking into her eyes.

“Mini, Neil beta…aap dono yaha achanak?” Ashok saw them from distance coming towards their house and rushed towards them. He saw Mini had two heavy bags with her and he got worried for her daughter and her marriage. “Is everything ok?” Ashok asked again. “Don’t worry dad, everything is fine. I am leaving for Delhi to join college. Mini has decided to live with you until I return. Everything happened in a hurry so didn’t get time to inform you beforehand.” Neil answered.
“Mini will live here…but... this is not right. She should go with you or atleast live in your house with Shakuntala ji.” Ashok stated the obvious. “Papa…aap bhi na…ab aap kuch mat bolo..itni mushkil se toh mujhe mauka mila hai kuch time wapas apni purani life apne tareeke se jeene ka.”Mini pouted. Soon she saw her favorite pair of rabbits playing in their courtyard and she jumped in joy. She ran after them to pick them up without even waiting for Ashok’s reply.
“Its ok dad, I dont mind if she wants to live here. I’ll take her back when I’ll return. Bye. Take care of her.” Neil said as he touched Ashok’s feet for the blessing. Ashok kept his hand on Neil’s head absentmindedly, worried for her daughter.
Neil turned to go. He walked some steps then turned again to throw one last look at his Minnu who was still playing with the rabbits. He smiled mirthlessly, “Yaha meri jaan nikli ja rahi hai tumse dur jaate hue aur tumhe toh bye bolne ki bhi fursat nahi hai.” He thought then left with heavy heart.
Mini was finally successful in catching the rabbits. She cooed at them then turn to show them to Neil but he was not there anymore. “Mere liye ruka bhi nahi…khadoos…bina bye bole chala gaya.” She thought and hung her head in disappointment until she saw some of her friends and got busy with them.
