Part 9
Neil and Mini returned Patiala. They returned in night, moved quietly towards their room without making any noise so that they don’t disturb Shakuntala. They were about to enter in their room when suddenly the lights were turned on. “Bahut ache, jaise choro ki tarah dono ghar se gaye the waise hi choro ki tarah dabe pav wapas aa rahe ho.” Shakuntala taunted when she caught them red handed. Shakuntala glared at them and then on their entwined hands. Neil and Mini, the partners in crime took deep breath and waited for their punishment. But to their surprise Shakuntala just shook her head dejectedly and went away from there.
“Thank God! Babes didn’t scold us.” Mini sighed. But Neil felt something was not right. His maa, didn’t say even a word. He was mentally preparing himself to face her wrath during whole journey because he knew Shakuntala would blast them for their mistake. “I don’t know Minnu, maa, never keeps anything in her heart….I think I should check upon her.” Neil said and went in Shakuntala’s room. “Maa, are you not angry with us?” Neil asked after struggling for right words. “Who I am to get angry from you? And why should I even get angry with your wife?” Shakuntala questioned back.
“I know maa, what we did…it has upset you but….” Neil tried to give explanation. “That girl…I mean your wife, she is new here. She doesn’t know rules and regulations, she doesn’t know me…so I can understand that she doesn’t care enough to obey me but you….you are my son. Phir bhi tum mere faisle ka sammaan nahi kar paye.” Shakuntala replied directly looking into his eyes, challenging him to deny any of this.
“Its not true maa, you know I love you and respect you but I also love Minnu. I couldn’t see her like that…crying day and night. Besides this, I didn’t do anything wrong….” Neil explained but Shakuntala didn’t let him complete, “Its not about right and wrong Neil. Its about the decision which I took but you don’t care…... I have spent all my life with my head held up in pride but by disobeying me like this…you have crushed my pride into pieces.This time I am not angry at Mini because you are the main culprit. You despite being my son failed to honour my words. You have really hurt me. I’ll never forgive you for this.” Shakuntala announced her decision.
Neil couldn’t say anything. He was feeling guilty now. His maa never been so angry with him. He didn’t know that in order to make his Minnu happy he would end up hurting his maa so badly. He felt tears were stinging his eyes threatening to fall any time. He left quietly with his head hung down in disappointment.

Neil sat down on the couch with a thump. “What happened? Did she scold you so much?” Mini asked. “No, I wouldnt have mind if she would have done that but…she didn’t say anything much…she…I have hurt her…maa…I…this is not done…she didn’t even talk to me properly.” Neil blinked rapidly,fighting back tears. Mini saw him. She felt bad. Though he was trying his best but she could see those un shed tears in his eyes. “Hey! Calm down. Please don’t be sad. Everything will be alright…I promise.” Mini whispered as she held his hands for assurance.
Slowly he gained his composure back. “I am sorry…you had to witness this….generally I am not like this…I..” Neil was now suddenly embarrassed of his own emotional state. “Its ok, you don’t have to hide it. We all have weak moments. I can understand.” Mini replied as she placed her hand on his shoulder. He felt relieved that instead of mocking him, his Minnu understood his emotions right now and before he could have think twice he pulled her into a tight hug again.
Until now they only shared mere friendly hugs but the way he was holding her now…it was more than just a friendly gesture. It had kind of intimacy in it. Something personal…something deep. Mini could feel he was restless and searching for some warmth, soothing words. She hesitated a little but then gave up the fight. Her hands traveled up his back. She rubbed his back and again whispered consoling words. She felt his heartbeats calming down after few minutes. Mini slowly pulled apart. Neil had his eyes closed. Mini didn’t know what happened to her in that moment. She leaned forward and kissed him on his forehead and eyes just like he did in the village when she told him that she likes him. Both were sharing eye intense eye lock when a gust of wind caused window door to bang on the grill and both of them came out of their little moment.
“I think we should sleep now.” Mini said and moved towards bed. She avoided eye contact with him. She was shocked on her own behavior.What was she doing there? What happened to her in that moment? Why was she looking at him like some silly girl, giving all those filmy expressions? She mentally chided herself.

Next day on the breakfast table Mini saw how Shakuntala was still angry on Neil. He tried to start conversation many times but she ignored him completely. Neil was sad again and Mini couldn’t bear it anymore. She decided to take matter in her own hands.
Mini found Shakuntala alone in the garden and she went towards her. “Hey Babes! How are you?” Mini asked knowing well that it will irk Shakuntala. “How many times I have to tell you? Don’t call me by that name.”Shakuntala glared at her. “You don’t know the joy I get by calling you babes.” Mini laughed making Shakuntala more angry. “Dekho ladki, mujhe gussa mat dilao nahi toh…” Shakuntala warned. “Nahi toh kya kar logi babes?” Mini mocked her again. “Stop irritating me you chorni.” Shakuntala moved forward threateningly. “Come on, catch me if you can budhiya…oops sorry..babes.” Mini showed her thumb and stick out her tongue to rile her further and Shakuntala gasped at her audacity. “Ruk, abhi batati hoon tujhe chorni.” Shakuntala ran after her some minutes but soon sat down at one place tired from all the circus.
Mini came forward asked her, “Kya hua?” “Badtameez, jungli, besharam…” Shakuntala started scolding her. “Wow, ho gaya daily ka quota pura? Nikal gayi bhadaas?” Mini asked. “What do you mean?” Shakuntala asked. “Babes, I am there…you can scold me, shout at me, complain about me any time. I wont mind, I am habitual to it but please don’t do this to Neil. Stop your silent treatment. He is not habitual to it. You have always showered your love on him so don’t make him suffer now, he cant take your indifference, he is upset. Don’t punish him for the mistake for which he is not responsible. If I hadn’t cried myself sick then he wouldn’t have taken that step. Scold me for all you want but please forgive Neil. He is very sad since that day.” Mini replied hoping that Shakuntala would understand.
“Shakuntala just kept looking at Mini. At this moment she seemed so mature and understanding and what she said made perfect sense. She came in her room and shut the door to think about it. She liked the way Mini defended Neil. “At least something good has happened because of this fiasco. That chorni has started valuing her son at least and Shakuntala realized that Mini was not that selfish. May be her upbringing is very different. She may be uncouth but has a good heart.

All were having dinner when Neil stood up after just having one chapatti. “Sit down. I am seeing that you are not eating properly since few days. Its not good for your health. Sit down and have some more.” Shakuntala stopped him from going. Neil smiled on hearing that strict but concern and loved filled voice of his maa again. “Maa, you forgave me?” He asked. “Didn’t want to but…couldn’t help…I am a mother after all. And your wife presented your case pretty well before me so….I had to absolve you of all charges.” Shakuntala let out a small laugh. Neil hugged her excitedly. “Thanks maa, you are the best.” He replied and looked at Mini. He winked at her and mouthed thanks while Mini just blew air on her nails showing attitude. This made both of them laugh.

As the days passed by Neil and Mini’s relationship progressed a lot in many ways. Now they were completely at ease with each other. Mini had accepted Oberoi mansion as her new home, Neil as her companion, Shakuntala as new strict elder in her life. But she was still not getting the whole picture. Meaning of marriage, responsibilities that comes with it, duties towards household, life partner, acceptance of love was still not her concerns.
But after that incident where she convinced Shakuntala to forgive Neil, he started thinking that Mini has become mature enough to understand their relationship and give it a chance. The fact that his pain, his sufferings bothers her was enough proof that he has made his place in her heart. To add to it she was now giving many signals knowingly or unknowingly that she is ready to take the plunge, like, she didn’t mind hugging him or kissing him on the cheeks or forehead. They were sleeping together and in the morning ended up in each others arms like always but she didn’t jump back immediately. She took her time to laze around, lying there for few minutes, even chatting with him, wishing him good morning, she didn’t mind when he walks just in his payjamas after bathing. On more than one occasions he has even caught her stealing glances at him. Moreover he could see it in her eyes, the love, the longing which reflected back in his own. He was now waiting for one right moment to make a move.

“Good morning Minnu.” Neil wished as he placed a light kiss on Mini’s forehead who was just rubbing her eyes to adjust to the sunlight. “Morning.” She mumbled feeling lazy to get up. “Get up Minnu, get ready. You already overslept. Today you have to come with me for shopping. My college is starting from next week. I have to sort out my things so help me out in that.” Neil said and shook her little in an attempt to make her sit straight on the bed. “No, let me sleep some more.” She pleaded. “Get up Minnu or else…” Neil threatened. “Or else what? Are you trying to scare me? I am not afraid of you.” Mini replied in attitude still having her eyes shut. “I’ll tell you now…” Neil rolled her over to her side and started tickling her. Mini started giggling like small girl, pleading him to stop. But Neil was now enjoying the little punishment so he continued to torture her with the movements of his fingers caressing, teasing her body and Mini was trying to cover herself so that he wont be able to touch the areas which were more sensitive to tickling.
In the process her saree was all messed up. Her pallu lying off her chest, her hair all disheveled and yet she was giggling continuously. Neil stopped abruptly when he took in the beautiful sight before him. Mini was still giggling, hitting his shoulder playfully. She stopped only when she looked into his eyes. The mischief was replaced by something dark, something intense which her innocent self couldn’t fathom. She tried to read it more carefully and understood at once whats going in his mind when he leaned down and kissed on her forehead. Every fiber of her body could tell that it was not their normal friendly, caring kinda kiss. It held very different sentiment right now…something which she didn’t want to understand yet. She started liking it, true, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t make her nervous. Her heartbeat picked up speed.
“Stop him.” Her mind whispered but throat went dry. Neil continued places light kisses on her eyes, nose and chin. “What are you doing Mini? Stop him.” Her mind reprimanded her. She opened her mouth but her breath got hitched when he placed wet feather light kisses in the crook of her neck. “STOP HIM.” Her mind screamed now. “Neilll…” She spoke up somehow but to her utter shock her voice sounded more like a moan not an objection and seemed that it triggered him more instead of stopping because he now moved towards her exposed chest area and his hands traveled down south towards her waist. He made a firm grip on her waist as he started nuzzling around her neck and chest. “I love you Minnu.” He whispered before indulging again in his work.
“Its now or never. Stop him before its too late.” Her mind warned her.
“But its all not feeling that bad…Infact its good.” Mini fought back her own mind.
“Then why are you nervous?” Mind argued.
“But he loves me. He will be upset.” Mini reasoned.
“But do you love him back? Then why worrying so much about his reaction?” Mind asked the million dollar question and Mini had no answer.
Neil now looked at her lips. He so wanted to taste them from day one but…finally he is getting chance. He leaned on her more to get more feel of her soft body.
“STOP HIM!” her mind screamed again and before Neil could have captured her lips she pushed him yet again and got up immediately.
Mini got busy in sorting her saree while Neil stayed on bed totally stunned as if someone rudely woke him up from beautiful dream. “Minnu, whats wrong?” He asked after few seconds. “Nothing…nothing…you were saying that today is going to be a busy day…lots of work to do…so…” Mini tried to avoid the conversation. Neil couldn’t believe he read her behavior incorrectly. It was so obvious from her actions, her eyes that she started liking him, she didn’t mind his touches, they made so much progress in past month but what happened to her suddenly or he really misread her body language?
“Minnu, we need to talk.” Neil said getting up and turning her around by holding her elbow. “About what?” Mini avoided eye contact. “You really don’t know Minnu?” Neil asked in no nonsense tone. “Talk…to him…that to oabout being physical…yeah right! Here I am feeling hell nervous when he touches me and he wants me to talk about it openly…genius!” Mini thought.
“Minnu, are you even listening to me?” Neil shook her now getting no response from her. She was all lost in her thoughts. “Yes I am listening and I don’t feel like talking anything. Leave me and let me go.” She pulled her hand away with jerk and turned around to avoid his questioning eyes. She was irritated from his interrogation. His questions would have made her introspect her own heart and feelings and right now she didn’t want to do it. “You don’t like all that Minnu? Tell me clearly, you don’t like it when I touch you…still we are stuck on that same day ? I thought we have come far away from that first day?” Neil asked again. He wanted answers now because he knew she has feelings for him. She liked their closeness. He could feel it a while ago then why she was denying it?
“NO, I don’t like it. I don’t like you. I don’t want to move ahead in this relationship….you got your answer? Are you happy now?” Mini shouted at him loosing her calm. He was making it difficult for her. She didn’t want to deal with this matter right now. Today she just wanted to escape somehow. She went outside after few seconds when he didn’t say anything further. She sighed in relief after coming out of the room as she was saved from the difficult conversation and the awkwardness that follows.
But Neil stood there stupefied. He couldn’t take her outburst. Her words felt like hammer hitting his head repeatedly. Why he had to face rejection again and again from his one and only true love? If at first time it had broke his heart then second time it has hurt his ego. From trying to help her adjust here to running after her like some love sick puppy, from being her friend to offend his maa for her…what not he has done for her and she….how can she be so selfish? Always only thinking about her comfort, her happiness, her feelings. Moreover she doesn’t even want to talk about it. “Ok, so if you are not willing to take a step towards me or accept your feelings then…let it be this way only…from now on I will also stop making efforts for this relationship.”Neil decided.
