Part 4

Mini was as usual running behind Arya holding her glass of milk in her hands. Arya saw her coming and hid in her nanu’s room. While Mini kept calling her but couldn’t find her. She guessed Arya must be in guest room with Neil. Mini marched towards the room angrily and pushed opened the door only to be embarrassed seeing Neil changing his clothes. He was getting ready for the day. He had just wore his uniform pants when Mini barged in. For the few seconds Mini kept looking at his bare upper body then realizing what she was doing she turned around immediately. “I…am…sorry ….I should have knocked first…” Mini stammered nervously.

Neil kept looking at her as he didn’t know why her reaction hurt him. “Its ok, you can turn around.” He said. Mini thought that he had wore his shirt that’s why he asked her to turn around. She turned but again immediately lowered her eyes as he was still not in his shirt. “Do you need anything?” Neil asked as he picked up the ointment from the dressing table. “No…I….actually….I thought Arya is here …so I…” Mini tried to give explanation all the while looking at him from the corner of her eyes. “Its ok you don’t need to give explanation and behave as if you have seen me for the first time. We are not some strangers…we are still man and wife” Neil stated his opinion a little too harshly than he should have as he couldn’t hide his hurt.

Mini immediately glared him forgetting the awkwardness, “Oh, so you remember that.” “Yes, I remember that and I have no intention to forget it so easily.” Neil retorted listening to her taunting. “Whatever!” Mini muttered and was about to go when Neil winced in pain. Mini turned again to see that Neil was trying to apply ointment on the back of his neck and shoulders. “What happened?” Mini couldn’t help but ask. “Nothing much….just neck and shoulder pain.” Neil replied as he looked in the mirror to find the right spot to apply ointment. “Neck and shoulder pain? But you only get it when….Oh! there are still hard pillows here on the bed….I had asked Rani di to change them and place soft pillows but when did she ever listens in one time…why you were using them…you should asked me for soft pillows.” Mini asked.

Neil didn’t give any reply as he was struggling with the ointment. Mini saw him and sighed. She went near him and took the ointment tube from his hands. “Let me help you.” Mini said. “No, thanks, I’ll manage.” Neil refused. “Mini rolled her eyes at him and pulled the stool in front of the dressing table gesturing him to sit there. Neil quietly sat there facing the mirror. While Mini stood behind him. She took some ointment and applied it on his neck and both the shoulders. She massaged gently with her both hands. They were this close after more than 3 years. His closeness was affecting her more than she thought. Everytime she rubbed ointment, her fingers would spend few extra seconds on his shoulders. His broad shoulders luring her to slip her hands even lower everytime and get as much feel as she could of those strong biceps.

Neil was looking at her through the mirror. Their sudden closeness was having same effects on him. Not just on shoulders but he wanted to feel her soft hands all over his bare upper body. Mini also looked in the mirror and their eyes met. Mini checked out his upper body and sighed mentally. She had forgotten actually how muscular and well built his bodyframe was and today she got a beautiful reminder of it. Mini noticed some marks on his body. She wanted to touch them and ask him how he got them but couldn’t gather the courage fearing he will take it in a wrong way or she might lose her self control completely. Mini came out of trance and closed the ointment tube. She thought of leaving the room when Neil held her hand.

“We need to talk Mini. We cant avoid it anymore.” Neil said. “What is there to talk?” Mini asked lowering her gaze as a sadness settled there. “Mini, please….for the sake of Arya. We have to sort out things between us.” Neil requested. Mini just nodded in yes. “What about tonight? Dinner with me?” Neil asked. “A dinner date?” Mini let out a small laugh. “Ya, sure…and you’ll make me wait like a fool.” Mini said sarcastically. “No, I promise I’ll come on time.” Neil replied. “Fine! Dinner date it is.” Mini agreed. “9.00pm, your favourite restaurant....be ready.” Neil promised.

Mini turned to go when Arya came running into the room followed by Rani as she was chasing Arya. Arya bumped into Mini and she lost her balance and was about to fell down when Neil caught her in time. Arya started laughing looking perplexed expressions of Mini while Rani immediately turned around muttering sorry. Rani was embarrassed as she thought she disturbed them in their private moment. While Arya stood there looking at her parents almost hugging each other. “Mumma, papa….me too….all three of us will hug together.” Arya demanded. “Sure princess.” Mini tried to say no but Neil picked Arya in his arms and also hugged Mini from side.

“Sir, as the dumping ground was in outer area of the city, there were lots of farm houses with the gardens in them. My team has questioned each and every one of them. They all are white collar reputed people like doctors, teachers, lawyers. I don’t think anyone of them would be a killer.” Mickey replied when Neil asked him about his investigation after few days.

“Don’t go by their profession. We are dealing here with a serial killer. These are mainly psychos. Financial or educational background doesn’t matters. Increase patrolling in that area. Report even any little suspicious activity to me.” Neil instructed. “Sir, some reporters have come to take a press bite from you.” Hanuman informed Neil. “What? Reporters…what do they want?” Neil asked and Hanuman just shrugged his shoulders in response.

Neil went outside the police station and saw some media person were gathered around there. They ran towards him as soon as they saw him coming. “Sir, aapko yaha aaye itne din ho chuke hain. Investigation kaha tak pahuchi? Kya koi aur clue mila?” reporters asked. “We are doing our best. But for obvious reason we cant let you know the details of our investigations as it will alert the killer.” Neil replied. “But sir, did you find out the motive behind the murders? All the victims were renowned and reputed in their fields having no criminal records or enemy. Who would want to kill them?” asked another reporter. Neil mentally repeated the question asked by the reporter and got his first clue in his words. “Of course! How I missed this fact.” He admonished himself mentally for overlooking this vital information. He instructed other officers to handle reporters while he came back inside with Hanuman and Mickey.

“What happened sir?” Hanuman asked. “Bring me the files of all the victims.” Neil ordered. A constable came running with all the records. Neil opened them one by one and read them. “Rajesh Ahluwalia, a very successful businessman in automobile sector, received businessman of the year award. Rashmi Malhotra, was studying in college, a very bright student, a gold medalist. Jackie Chaddha, a famous punjabi singer, received music excellence award. Rohit Khanna, a school student, an all rounder, won student of the year medal and lastly Kishore Singh, owner of popular restaurants, made place in top ten richest entrepreneur list of state.”

“Sir what about that?” Mickey asked confused as to why Neil was reading it again as they already know it. “Don’t you get it? They all were renowned and reputed people of their respective fields. No enemies, no criminal records…all people have only good things to say about them…they were f**king perfect in every aspect.” Neil answered.

“Yes, that’s the common thing between all of them.” Hanuman said. “Yes, now we have to find the common connection between them…..there has to be something which we are missing. Dig deeper. Question the family members of each victim again.” Neil instructed. “Yes, we will find out. Hum bhi dekhe ki perfect logo ko marne wala ye perfectionist …ye serial killer aakhir hai kaun aur kyu kar raha hai ye sab?” Hanuman said.

Mini put the note books of children she just checked in her locker in the staff room and was about to go out when she found her fellow teacher Manmeet in front of her. “Hey Mini, where are you busy these days? He asked. “Hello Manmeet, nothing important…just busy at home.” Mini replied and tried to move past him when Manmeet stopped her again. “Hey whats the hurry? Have coffee with me…bahut din ho gaye.” He invited her. Mini considered Manmeet as good friend. He was her colleague, had friendly nature and polite. She had gone with him to nearby caffe two three times on his insistence just as a friendly gesture. She never took it as coffee date as Manmeet had always asked her for coffee when school ends and Mini had Arya with her at that time. But Manmeet liked Mini and he wanted to make his place in her life through Arya. Mini, unaware of his one sided love also accepted his offer to give them lift to their house a few times.

“Manmeet, not today…actually I have to get ready as I have to go somewhere in the evening.” Mini tried to avoid him as she wanted to go the parlour to get ready for her dinner date with Neil. “Come on, it wont take much time.” Manmeet insisted again. “No, Manmeet, some other time may be.” Mini refused politely. Arya came running to her with her school bag. “Mumma, lets go home quickly. Today Rani di told me that she will make my favorite snacks for evening.” Arya replied excitedly. Mini laughed at her, “Ok baba, lets go.” Mini replied. Manmeet again called her, “Mini, I will drop you home.” Mini was about to say no when Arya said quickly, “Yes mumma, we will reach very fast in Manmeet sir’s car.” “Ok my toofan mail.” Mini smiled at her and said yes to Manmeet while he smiled thinking that he will be able to sit close to Mini although for few minutes but still…he will enjoy her company.
