Yes, I mean it !
I know life is busy- with work, studies and whatever else there may be. I suffer the same daily chaos but I do keep watching some dramas on the side. Until one that is really special comes along... and inspires me to write again.
Yaqeen ka Safar is a journey that feels complete in every sense of the word. From the word go', we are introduced to the two very different worlds of our two protagonists Zubia' and Asfandyar'. One has to suffer the harshness of an overbearing father, while the other is a free-spirit under the protective wing of his doting and inspiring older brother. Both of these characters stumble along the shaky path of youth, finding people who appear well suited to their inexperienced eye, but who shatter their youthful hopefulness and trust in their individual moments of weakness. Death takes away the loved ones who meant the world to them and they are forced to find their way through their trials of life. Both face situations which expose the double standards of society; the need to name and shame' those who are involved in any scandal, without any concern for the truth. The effects of the incidents are to have long term effects on their respective personalities.
Where one learns to suffer in silence, the other grows impatient and irritable with the world in general. Where one learns the value of forgiveness and understanding, the other does not require the understanding of the world. Where one has emotions that spill over like a boiling kettle and scald anyone who makes any mistake; the other keeps all emotions packed in her heavy suitcase of shame. One longs for forgiveness and acceptance ; while the other finds it hard to forgive. One clings to the belief that people are essentially good while the other believes that people are good while the going is good. Both turn to their careers in search of the fulfillment that they lack in their personal lives.
The paths of these two complex characters collide in this beautiful journey , which as the title suggests, will be a path towards faith- in life, in people and most of all, in each other. In the meantime, as they take a purposeful stride towards that ultimate goal in each episode, it is a joyride' ( Remember that Roxette song?) . So be a joyrider folks!
I will not be giving the story away in a summary form. I advise you to watch the drama as it is worth every minute of your time. The style of my review, is to unwrap the story like a bar of chocolate and expose what makes it truly special.
1) THE CHARACTERS
A solid leading cast with an equally strong supporting cast. Each and every character has done justice to their role. Where Shaz Khan as Daniyal and Hira Salman as Gaiti were a treat to watch in the first half as the romantic lead; Noori played by Sohaee Abro was another convincing portrayal, well supported by a strong performance by the child actor who played her brother.
On Zubia's side, the scenes between Sajal Ali and Ehteshamuddin as her father Khalil, were so heart wrenching that it was hard not to shed a tear. Even Nabeel Zuberi in his limited screen time as Rameez left a lasting impact of the danger that he posed to Zubia. From Beenish Raja as Sheema to Khala Mahjabeen portrayed by the excellent Huma Nawab, it is really a drama that is sprinkled with the gold dust of perfect casting.
Before I proceed, I would like to mention that we all miss the dashing Daniyal on our screens. The lawyer who took on the world, was a beloved character not only because of the way it was written, but equally because of the portrayal.
2) THE DHOOP KINARAY OF THIS GENERATION?
We have found the Dr Ahmer & Dr Zoya for this generation in Asfandyar and Zubia . (Coincidentally even their names start with the same letters). Yes there is a character trying to be like Dr Irfan and not quite having the same charm in this drama; and yes, it is a story around doctors where the doctor in charge', so to speak, is hard to please and yes, there was a medical camp which may be the highlight for many, in both dramas, but there the similarities end.
This drama is totally different as the two leading characters are so different and complex. Asfandyar and Zubia both have very serious and sombre personalities. Their background has provided so much depth to their individual growth that their journey is truly uncertain and intriguing. Still in their mid- twenties, their reactions and mistakes are more modern. A text sent to the wrong person or an accidental slip of the tongue that conveys more than one wishes. Then the cover-up by acting aloof the next day much to the confusion of the other. Every scene is a treat to watch.
There is also no similarity in the personalities of Dr Ahmer and Dr Asfandyar. The latter can be unfair in his anger and can be extremely harsh without explanation. But like the former, who ruled the hearts of a generation, Ahad Raza Mir is all set to become the new replacement. * Keep the haircut Ahad- it suits you so much more! Just saying !*
Dr Zubia is not a character that you warm to, because of her infinite cuteness like Dr Zoya, but a character that grows on you, because of the strength of character and tolerance. Sajal Ali is a natural performer and knows how to strike the right note in every scene. I'm glad that in her scenes, she conveys any confusion in feelings after some action by Asfandyar, by acting sober rather than coy- the latter would have totally destroyed the impact.
3) THE ROMANCE
Yup, there is plenty of that. The beautiful scenes between Daniyal and Gaiti pitched the romance at the right level . Thank you for that as the scenes seemed more realistic and they appeared like a doting married couple. (*I am a firm believer that Humsafar needed atleast one side hug in the end, to make it more realistic. Diyaredil, on the other hand, got it right in that department*).
Then ofcourse from episode 18 onwards, we start on the epic journey of watching the two leads interact with each other. Every scene flows beautifully and there is a natural chemistry between Sajal Ali and Ahad Raza Mir. The acting is understated and yet very powerful. Every expression conveys so much and every look is loaded with meaning. In the most recent episode, Dr Zubia got hurt and the care shown by Dr Asfandyar, led to the timely warning to us all. Handle it carefully' or you will be watching this episode ( and this beautiful scene) more than once. Then the rain sequence in episode 21 where they battled various circumstances in a bid to get home and in the process, saw each other in a new light. We, in turn, fell in love with them at the same time.
So many beautiful moments have been captured beautifully to create a timeless love story that will no doubt win many more hearts.
4) THE WRITING, DIRECTION AND PRODUCTION
I have said this before- Farhat Ishtiaq knows how to create men that women fall for and stories that stir all sorts of emotions. Many of her characters are neither black nor white but sit comfortably in the grey zone where we can't even hate them for their wrongs. Khalil or Abay, as Zubia's father is one example, who demonstrates another side to his nature when we least expect it.
Shahzad Kashmiri as the director has ensured that the editing and the transition of the story on screen is praiseworthy. After you write a good story, it comes to life in the hands of the director. Beautifully done in this case. My small criticism is that the visuals of the locations need to be a bit varied and diverse. When the scene of the drama has moved to Karachi, it is signified by the same visual i.e the roads with the Mazar-i- Quaid at a distance as an annoying and bad visual effects creation in the form of an eagle flies across the screen. That has happened numerous times. Then the visual of some rocks with water flowing- it is hard not to notice that the same visuals have been recycled time and again.
Another small criticism needs to be directed at the costume and makeup in some scenes. For example, maybe a gotay wala dupatta at a medical camp was not the best costume choice nor was the excess makeup after a long day. But anyway, minor things compared to the overall big picture.
This is MD Productions at its best. The locations, the attention to detail and the efforts to show parts of the country and the characters , in the most impressive and realistic manner is truly worth appreciating. The result is a drama that is getting a million views per episode. Good work gets good results.
To wrap up, if you liked Humsafar or Diyaredil or Bin Roye, you will LOVE Yaqeen Ka Safar. So do watch it and share your views as I will be glued too
