I think JEJ was more of a slow burn. Slow burn is fine where story unfolds gradually. In SMD, slow burn story toh hai (which is fine) but the main issue is the slow pace which is contrived and not organic and added by the director. When I say slow pace of SMD, I mean:
- slo-mo scenes. Watch some of Sadaf and her fam scenes at 1.25x pe (like the one in this episode where her mother is lying on the takht and Sadaf is sitting next to her, and a call comes on her mobile). It looks like you are playing a scene at 1.0X. In contrast, if you watch some other scenes (like office ones) at 1.25x, you can tell it's being sped up.
- voiceovers of lines we just heard. For example, in this episode, there's a 41-second scene of Amaar sitting in the car and it's a voice over of Humsha and Sadaf's dialogues that we heard a few minutes ago.
- extra looong pauses. For example, after Humsha said the image line, there was a pause of 53 seconds when the camera just lingered on Humsha and then Amaar.
- repetitive scenes. In particular, Humsha & Amaar kept talking about same thing over & over in this episode. Before too, we see again and again long-drawnout sequences that give same info we already know (the CID investigation of Sadaf, the doctor visit, etc.)
Slo-mo scenes, repetitive scenes and voice overs, and long pauses are what I mean by slow pace. JeJ mai yeh sab aisa nahi tha. You can have slow burn story jo ahista ahista khulti hai but a slowburn story can have normal pace without these tactics Haseeb is using in SMD to stretch the episode lengths.
A crisper pace and tighter edit (all of which is achievable in post) would have made this a much better watch.
