Ahh now we have it cited as Shuddha Kalyan smiley36. Seriously hard to distinguish and film music makes in doubly hard. Like why did they think it was a good idea to include two different kinds of 'Ma' in the same raag? smiley44

I think all Yaman, Shuddha Kalyan and Yaman Kalyan songs should just be classed as 'Yaman' or better yet 'Kalyan' like this blog has done.

Coming to the next raag:

Bhimpalasi (Kaafi thaat)

Again, plenty of songs in this raag but this is a textbook example

Beena madhur madhur kachu bol

Film: Ram Rajya (1943)

Music: Shankar Rao Vyas

Lyrics: Ramesh Gupta

Singer: Saraswati Rane

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JJfdVjjTYE

Another example, maybe not quite so textbook but close

Ae ri main toh Prem Deewani

Film: Naubahar (1952)

Music: Roshan

Lyrics: Shailendra/ Meerabai

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-ZvWTz8SJU

And yet another that I absolutely love

Aa neele gagan tale

Film: Badshah (1956)

Music: Shankar Jaikishen

Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Hemant Kumar

Aberi (Carnatic equivalent of Bhimpalasi)- Janya raga of Kharaharapriya (22nd Melakarta)

I love Aberi raagam (my go to reference is the Thyagaraja kriti Nagumomu Galaneni) but there are so many good film songs in this raagam!

I find this song a pretty good example of Aberi

Kannodu Kanbadellam (Tamil)

Film: Jeans (1998)

Music: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

Singer: Nithyashree Mahadevan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtMUwHQ8Rz8

Singara velane deva

Film: Konjum Salangai (1962)

Music: S.M. Subbiah Naidu

Lyrics: K.M. Balasubramaniam

Singer: S. Janaki

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPKtm5zLgbo

Honorary mention: Devathai pol oru from Gopura Vasalile (Tamil) but I think it's confusing and don't find it like Aberi for the most part.

Adding another Hindi song because it's Rafi and I can't not post Rafi! smiley9

This is Bhimpalasi btw - there is a difference in the movement of the swaras in Aberi & this.

Maine chand aur sitaron ki tamanna ki thi

Film: Chandrakanta (1956)

Music: N. Dutta

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singer: Mohammed Rafi

When Durga, chafing due to lack of privacy, pushes her husband Aravind out of the kitchen where they sleep, their sister-in-law Manju expresses her sympathy for both of them in this Marathi song set to Rāga Yamana.

Song: Kā Re Durāvā

Singer: Asha Bhosle, Pallavi Lomate-Pathak, Kalyani Deshpande (sitar)

Movie: Mumbaīçā Zāṃvaī (1970)

Actors: Rajita Thakur, Arun Sarnaik, Surekha (Parkar), Raja Dani

Lyricist: Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar

Music: Sudhir Phadke

Lyrics

का रे दुरावा? का रे अबोला?

अपराध माझा असा काय झाला?

Kā re durāvā? Kā re abolā?

Aparādha māzhā asā kāya zhālā?

Why distance, man? Why silent treatment, man?

What was the offence that I committed?

नीज येत नाही मला एकटीला

कुणी ना विचारी, धरी हनुवटीला

मान वळविसी तू वेगळ्या दिशेला

Nīza yeta nāhī malā ekaṭīlā

Kuṇī nā vicārī, dharī hanuvaṭīlā

Māna vaḷavisī tū vegaḷyā diśelā

Sleep doesn't come when I'm alone

No one asks me, or holds my chin

You turn your neck to a different direction

तुझ्यावाचुनी ही रात जात नाही

जवळी जरा ये, हळू बोल काही

हात चांदण्याचा घेई उशाला

Tujhyāvāçunī hī rāta zāta nāhī

Zavaḷī zarā ye, haḷū bola kāhī

Hāta çāndaṇyāçā gheī uśālā

Without you, this night isn't passing

Come a little closer, softly talk a bit

Take a ray of moonlight for a pillow

रात जागवावी असे आज वाटे

तृप्त झोप यावी पहाटे पहाटे

नको जागणे हे, नको स्वप्नमाला

Rāta zāgavāvī ase āza vāṭe

Tṛpta zhopa yāvī pahāṭe pahāṭe

Nako zāgaṇe he, nako svapna-mālā

Tonight, I feel like keeping awake all night

Satisfied sleep should come at dawn, at dawn

Don't want this sleeplessness, don't want a dream-series

I think an example of Darbari Kanada was posted so taking off on that..

Raag Darbari kanada (Carnatic raag janya of 20th Melakarta, Natabhairavi)

This is a serious (almost grave) raga. To be sung at night.

It's a Carnatic raga and called simply Darbari in Hindustani, follows the same convention.

This is a hugely popular raag in film music and there are a plethora of songs in it.

One of the most perfect examples of Darbari Kanada imo. This song makes you 'feel' all the depth and the melancholy of this raag, the way Rafi renders it! smiley19

O duniya ke rakhwale

Film: Baiju Bawra (1952)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Singer: Mohammed Rafi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ7SalrDbos

Another accurate representation of the raag

Jhanak jhanak tori baaje payaliya

Film: Mere Huzoor (1968)

Music: Shankar Jaikishen

Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri

Singer: Mannadey

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKQuPTBicE8

Ahh the melancholy in this one!

Teri duniya mein dil lagta nahi

Film: Bawre Nain (1950)

Music: Roshan

Lyrics: Kidar Sharma

Singer: Mukesh

Music: Ilaiya Raja

Singer: K.J. Yesudas

Naane varugiren (Tamil)

Film: O Kadhal Kanmani (2015)

Music: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

Singers: Sathya Prakash, Shashaa Tirupati

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27Xk8-6Fe8E

Khamaj (thaat raag)/ Harikamboji (28th Melakarta)

Piya tose naina lage re was posted as an example of this raag.

However, for me, textbook Khamaj is this one.

Aayo kahan se Ghanshyam

Film: Buddha mil gaya (1971)

Music: R.D. Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Mannadey

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YcECS_WsK4

O Sajna barkha bahar aayi

Film: Parakh (1960)

Music: Salil Chowdhary

Lyrics: Shailendra

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTl3-F24thk

Another pretty good example for Khamaj (this sort of rendition is apparently seen in the Thumri genre - not an expert.)

Sakhi ri sun bole papiha uss par

Film: Miss Mary (1957)

Music: Hemant Kumar

Lyrics: Rajinder Kishen

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle

I find Harikamboji quite different from Khamaj, could be the missing Rishabha (R2) in the arohanam that makes the difference but here are some songs in Harikamboji.

En kadhale (Tamil) (I think there's a lot of mixing going on in this one)

Film: Duet (2001)

Music: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

Singer: S.P. Balasubramaniam

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZDouiuljuE

Aathangara marame (Tamil)

Film: Kizhakku Cheemaiyile (1993)

Music: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

Singers: Mano, Sujatha Menon
