Lyrics

प्रथम तुज पाहता जीव वेडावला

उचलुनी घेतले निजरथी मी तुला

Prathama tuza pāhatā jīva veḍāvalā

Uçalunī ghetale nija-rathī mī tulā

First time I saw you, my soul went crazy

I lifted you, took you into my chariot

स्पर्श होता तुझा विसरलो भान मी

धुंद श्वासांतला प्राशिला गन्ध मी

नयन का देहही मिटुनि तू घेतला

Sparśa hotā tuzhā visaralo bhāna mī

Dhunda śvāsāṃtalā prāśilā gandha mī

Nayana kā dehahī miṭuni tū ghetalā

Upon contact with you, I forgot to be aware

Out of engrossed breaths, I ate fragrance

Why only eyes? You closed up your body too!

जाग धुंदीतुनी मजसि ये जेधवा

कवळुनी तुजसि मी चुम्बिले तेधवा

धावता रथ पथी पळभरी थांबला

Zāga dhundītunī mazasi ye jedhavā

Kavaḷunī tuzasi mī cumbile tedhavā

Dhāvatā ratha pathī paḷa-bharī thāmbalā

As soon as from reverie I got to wake

I embraced you and kissed you right away

Galloping on the road, the chariot waited a minute

Raag Baageshree is the inspiration behind Madhumati's well-known "Aajaare Pardesi" song! Salil Chaudhary used the high pitch, an ascending string of notes, in this song.

The purpose of this pitch is to evoke a never-ending sensation of melancholy. The film's female character, Vijayantimala, was overwhelmed with sadness and unrequited desires, which were alluded to by the poignant endlessness of these notes. Such a blend of low and high pitches had never been imagined in Hindi cinema music before!!

Movie : Madhumati

Music Director: Salil Chowdhary

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Director: Bimal Roy
