Song: Yaśavanta Ho Jayavanta Ho

This is also sounding like Malkauns to me smiley6 (Are my ears ringing Malkauns?) It’s definitely not Bhairavi though.

The use of Madhyam Swar is so beautiful in this Raga and it holds a unique elegance. Its a serious yet a meditative Raga for me.

Legendary Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passes away

This song is from Geet Gaya Patharon Ne, a highly acclaimed movie directed by V Santaram.

Known for her unique interpretation of the Jaipur gharana, renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar is regarded as one of the best vocalists in the Hindustani tradition.

Amonkar created her own unique style while learning the subtleties and methods of the Jaipur gharana from her mother, Mogubai Kurdikar. Amonkar sang some lighter classical genres of Thumri and Bhajans, but her reputation was mostly earned by her expert performance of classical khayals set in the ancient ragas of Hindustani music. Despite this, she stayed away from movie music; one of her few movie songs was the title track from V Shantaram's 1964 film Geet Gaya Patharon Ne. She also composed the music and performed all four of the songs from Govind Nihalani's 1990 film Drishti. Regardless of musical genre, her performances were marked by vitality and grace. The track had shades of raag Durga, and Amonkar had to blend her knowledge of swar bhaasha (musical notes) with shabd bhaasha (lyrical notes).

Sharing always has its joy with like-minded music lovers.smiley1 While composing for a film, the music directors tend to take a few steps while adopting the janya raga to match the situation/ singer/ lyricist's special requirements.

Ragam--Devagandhari

Devagandhari is a janya raga whose parent scale, is Shankarabharanam, 29th in the 72 Melakarta raga system. This is not to be confused with Karnataka Devagandhari, which is a janya f Kharaharapriya similar to Abheri.

The closest raga to this one is Arabhi. Both share the same ascending and descending scale, in terms of basic notation. But, some of the things that make Arabhi different from this raga are -- Devagandhari is sung with gamakas and vilambita kala prayogas (usages with elongated notes) Many Tyagaraja Keertanas are based on this Devagandhara Raga.

My most favorite in Devagandhari smiley42

Yesudas does a commendable job here, but my favorite rendition of this song remains Dr. BMK's. smiley42

Weirdly, Devagandhari was adopted into HCM from CCM but the Hindustani Dev Gandhar sounds quite different - leans more towards Jaunpuri and Asavari according to many aficionados.

This song for example is contended as being in Jaunpuri by many.

Jab dil ko satave gham

Film: Sargam (1950)

Music: C.Ramchandra

Lyrics: P.L. Santoshi

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Saraswati Rane

Another song that has a mix of Jaunpuri and Dev Gandhar by the inimitable K.L. Saigal (non-film song)

Jhulana Jhulavo re (1932)
