Raag Puriya Dhanashri known as Pantuvarali or Kamavardhini in CCM - a sampoorna raga and the 51st Melakarta.

Kamavardhini literally means that which augments desire so I guess that explains why A.R. Rahman chose this raag for this song. I'm discovering so much about raags thanks to the little digging I'm doing for this thread, it's wonderful to know composers apply so much thought into their raag choices!

The use of Madhyam Swar is so beautiful in this Raga and it holds a unique elegance. Its a serious yet a meditative Raga for me.

Raag Desi (Kaafi/ Asavari thaat): Sung during mid to late morning

This is the only Hindi film song that comes to mind in this raag.

Ustad Amir Khan was the voice of Tansen in this movie and the film/ storyline needed someone who could defeat Tansen in a jugalbandi between him and Baiju. Naushad and Vijay Bhatt, the producer were in a quandary. Who could someone of Ustad Amir Khan's calibre possibly lose to? With trepidation they approached him and what followed surprised them and could probably go down as one of the most heartening anecdotes of humility in the history of Hindi films. Ustad Amir Khan Sahab told them to get Pt. D.V. Paluskar as his only peer that he didn't mind losing to. The result? This phenomenal jugalbandi that plays out as Baiju and Tansen's final competition in the movie.

The melting of the stone is metaphorical of the melting of Tansen's heart - and also the dissolving of Bajiu's long-held feelings of vendetta towards Tansen. In the end, music always wins! smiley19

When I shared Dhunda Madhumatī Rāta Re (lyrics and translation), I called it Rāga Candrakaṃsa, not Mālakaṃsa. The difference is komala niṣāda in Mālakaṃsa and śuddha niṣāda in Candrakaṃsa. The Mālakaṃsa songs that I know (Mī Bhīka Māgaṇārī is one example that I've shared) don't sound like Dhunda Madhumatī Rāta Re. Listeners trained in classical music can decide which niṣāda is used in this song. It's beyond my ability.

Dariki Rāboku Rāboku Rājā is obviously not either Rāga Mālakaṃsa or Candrakaṃsa. I haven't been able to find anyone on the internet claiming that this song is Rāga-based.

Is this song based on Rāga Bhairavī?

Song: Yaśavanta Ho Jayavanta Ho

Singer: Sudhir Phadke

Movie: Bhintīlā Kāna Asatāta (1962)

Lyricist: Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar

Music: Sudhir Phadke

Lyrics

Mukepaṇāne karisī sevā

Tūça ekalā malā visāvā

Duvā kāya mī tuzalā dyāvā

Yaśavanta ho, jayavanta ho!

Mutely you perform service

You alone are a refuge for me

What blessing should I give you?

Be successful, be victorious!

Dubaḷyā-poṭī janmalāsa tū

Nakosa dubaḷā ṭharū paraṃtu

Pureça kara tū māzhe hetū

Yaśavanta ho, jayavanta ho!

To a weakling you were born

Even so, don't be judged a weakling

Surely fulfil my purposes

Be successful, be victorious!

Bālapaṇī tuza chaḷite vipadā

Thorapaṇī tū miḷava saṃpadā

Dhanavantāṃnā jiṅka dahādā

Yaśavanta ho, jayavanta ho!

In childhood, calamity torments you

In adulthood, may you earn prosperity

Surpass the wealthy ten times over

Be successful, be victorious!

Vyartha janma re vidyevāçūna

Jñāna jagātīla gheī veçūna

Kīrti āṇa tū pāyī kheçūna

Yaśavanta ho, jayavanta ho!

Useless, man, is birth without education

Take knowledge from the world, plucking it

Bring fame to your feet, snatching it

Be successful, be victorious!

Tū andhācyā hātī kāṭhī

Tū kula-dīpaka āī-poṭī

Tūça eka maza puḍhatī-pāṭhī

Yaśavanta ho, jayavanta ho!

You're a blind person's walking-stick in hand

You're family-illumination from your mother's womb

You alone stand ahead and behind me

Be successful, be victorious!

Man Re Tu Hi Bata Kya Gau Lyrics :

I confess I'm not very familiar with Raag Chandrakauns, but the song Dhund Madhumati doesn't sound like Chandrakauns to me. It sounds more like Malkauns. But I could be wrong. Also the video identifies it as Bhoop. smiley5

Chandrakauns is a serious raag and does sound very much like Malkauns in parts since they differ only by one note.

But it is still distinguishable from Malkauns since the pakad (or the group of Swaras that form the essence of the raag when it's being presented) in Malkauns does not have the 'Ni' swara. The shuddha 'Ni' in Chandrakauns features more prominently and that could explain why it sounds different from Malkauns. But it's easy for a lay person to be confused.

I'm not that adept in recognizing raagas by breaking them down into their swaras and matching them with the Aarohanam and Avarohanam. That technique - to my mind - can be quite misleading since the highest note of one swara can correspond at times to the lowest of the next swara. And more because it's so difficult to recognize notes in a song. Plus, in Carantic music, the gamakas added make it all the more confounding. I usually go by what a raag "sounds like" and use a "textbook" reference to compare it with. That's not a foolproof method either - especially with film songs since they tend to veer off the raga quite often. But it's a method that has most often brought me success.

Here's a song in raag Chandrakauns.

Film: Sampurna Ramayan (1971)

Music: Vasant Desai

Lyrics: Bharat Vyas

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

And here's the Carnatic duo Ranjani- Gayatri performing this Abhang in Raag Chandrakauns.

I agree about the Telugu song - it's neither Chandrakauns nor Malkauns. I think it may have been shared since it has a similar scenario to the Keechaka Vadh song.
