Aaya Holi ka Tyohaar
Udey Rangon ki Bauchaar
Holi is one of the most loved and cherished festivals of India. Colorful streets, colorful faces, colorful walls. The entire country is filled with colors of joy and fun. It won’t be exaggerating to say that lot of people in India wait eagerly for this festival throughout the year. The word Holi itself lightens up the faces.
Holi is celebrated in the month of Falgun (February/March). It signifies the beginning of spring season. The celebrations start with Holika Dahan in the evening of Purnima or Full moon day. It is also called as Choti Holi. During the evening of the full moon day, people gather outside their homes, light a huge bonfire, throw away all the old and unwanted stuff into the fire. The fire signifies new beginnings and triumph of good over evil. The legend behind Holika dahan was that there was a demon king named Hiranyakashyap who declared himself God. His son Prahlad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. In order to kill Prahlad, he invited his sister Holika who had a boon that no fire can kill her. Holika sits on a bonfire and places the little Prahlad on her lap with the intention of killing him. Prahlad came out safe but Holika lost her life as the boon given to her didn’t work because her intentions were wrong and sinful.
On the day of Holi, people color each others faces with Gulaal or colorful powders, splash each other with colorful waters from water guns, water balloons. The celebrations go on till almost evening. People also cook different delicacies like gujiyas, mathri, etc. According to Hindu scriptures, Lords Radha and Krishna used to play Holi with many Gopas and Gopis. There’s a very interesting story associated to this festival. Lord Krishna in his childhood always used to complain to Yashoda about his dark complexion and Radha’s fair complexion. Yashoda, tired of his desperation, asked Radha to color Krishna’s face with whatever color she wanted. Radha colored Krishna’s face and Radha and Krishna became a couple. In northern parts of India, this festival celebrates the pure love of Radha and Krishna.
