Diwali or Deepawali is one of the most popular and biggest festivals celebrated by Hindus all over the world. It is also known as the Festival of Lights as it symbolizes the triumph of Light of Knowledge over Darkness of Ignorance, and Good over Evil.

On this day in Treta Yuga, Lord Ram alongwith his wife Goddess Sita and brother Lord Lakshman had retuned to Ayodhya after slaying the evil king Ravana. The inhabitants of Ayodhya had welcomed them by lighting diyas or earthern lamps outside their homes. From that day onwards, every Hindu family lights diyas and places them outside their homes. On this day in Dwapar Yuga, Lord Krishna had defeated Narakasura a demon. Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped on this day and people clean their homes few days before Diwali and decorate their homes to welcome her and gain her blessings. It is also said that Lord Vishnu sent King Bali to rule the netherworld. People belonging to the religion of Jainism worship this day as they believe Lord Mahavir had attained nirvana or enlightenment on Diwali. Sikh people celebrate this day as their Guru Hargobind Ji was freed from imprisonment.

Diwali is a five day festival in India. The first day is called Dhanteras and on this day, people keep their homes clean and buy Gold and new clothes. The second day is called Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali as on this day Lord Krishna had defeated Narakasura. The third day is the main festival Diwali which begins with Lakshmi Pooja. People celebrate the festival by distributing sweets, wishing each other and bursting crackers. On the fourth day, people do Govardhan Pooja as Lord Krishna had lifted the Govardhan hill with his tiny finger to rescue the people of Vrindavan from torrential rains. Merchants and businessmen close their old account books and open new accounts on this day. The fifth and final day of the festival is called Bhai Dooj which celebrates the brother-sister bond.

Here are some safety tips for our IF brothers and sisters to follow.

1. Keep firecrackers away from children and potential sources of fire.

2. Place the diyas away from curtains and electrical wiring places.

3. Never leave the children even for few seconds while they're bursting crackers.

4. If you're using LED lights, buy good quality ones and ask a professional electrician to install them.

5. Always keep fire extinguisher or few buckets filled with water ready in case of emergencies.

6. Always light the crackers a few feet away from your homes in a safe place.

7. Clear all the dry leaves and dry grass in your backyard before lighting the crackers as they can spread the fire easily.

8.Put used firecrackers in water for few minutes before throwing them in the garbage bins.

9. Wear cotton clothes and shoes while bursting crackers.

10. Keep first aid box always with you.

11. Keep your pets inside homes as they're highly sensitive to loud sounds.

12. Never use hand sanitizers before handling firecrackers as they're inflammable.
