Eid ul Adha means "Festival of sacrifice" and is one of the important religious holidays celebrated by Muslims across the globe to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Ismail (who was also a Prophet) as an act of obedience to Allah.
This Eid is celebrated annually on the 10th Day of the 12th and final month of the Islamic month, Dhu-al-Hijjah. This is the month in which many Muslims who are fit and wealthy enough to perform the Holy Pilgrimage of Hajj, travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj - the 5th Pillar of Islam.
The month of Dhu-al-Hijjah is one of the most holiest months as we witness two special events; Hajj and Eid ul Adha. The first 10 days of this month are extremely important. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said "There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these 10 days".
According to the Sunnah, it is highly recommended for non-pilgrims to fast on the 9th Day - the day of Arafah. It is believed fasting on this day will eliminate all the sins of the fasting person for the current year and the previous year.
The story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) acts as a reminder to mankind to have immense faith in Allah during difficult times and to remember Allah and seek his mercy and forgiveness in all walks of life.
When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) married Hajra (also known as Hajar) and was soon bestowed with the happiness of a child, a son, Ismail (pbuh). Not long after, Allah ordered Prophet Ibrahim to leave his wife Hajra and his son in Mecca (which was a form of desert at the time with no water). Hajra questioned Prophet Ibrahim for leaving them in an isolated place and asked whether this was a command from Allah (SWT). Prophet Ibrahim replied yes and Hajra showed immense faith in Her Creator and said "Then Allah will not cause us to be lost."
It was not long before both mother and son were thirsty. Hajra ran up and down between hills "Safa and Marwah" seven times in search for water. Exhausted, she fell near her baby son and prayed to Allah. A miracle occurred - a spring of water burst from the ground where Ismail's feet were kicking. This water is called ZamZam and is still available till date.
When Ismail grew up, Prophet Ibrahim had a dream wherein Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son. A test from Allah, Prophet Ibrahim took it upon himself to adhere to this command and pass the test. As he placed his son on the ground and directed a knife towards his neck, he was instructed by Allah that he had fulfilled Allah's command and was ordered to sacrifice a ram instead of Ismail.
This is why the act of "Qurbani" meaning Sacrifice consists of slaughtering an animal in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice for Allah (SWT). Muslims who can afford to sacrifice an animal are instructed to do so on this day. The qurbani is then divided into three equal parts, one for yourself and family, one for friends and neighbours and the final portion is donated to the poor.
The celebrations of this Eid typically last 3 days. Like Eid ul Fitr, Muslims will perform Ghusl and attend the Eid Prayer in congregation at their local mosque and then spend the rest of the day celebrating with friends and family. On this special day, let us all prayer to Allah for mercy on those suffering and remember to always support the needy wherever you can.
Eid ul Adha mubarak to all those celebrating!
