Mother's Day, a day dedicated to all the Mothers of the world is celebrated on the second Sunday in May every year in the United States. This is a special day to appreciate and adore the mothers for all the efforts they put in raising their children and for the numerous sacrifices they made for them.
Before United States, there were quite a few countries that dedicated a day to honor the mothers. The Greeks and Romans used to honor the mother figure of their Gods. The Phrygians used to arrange a festival for their mother Goddess, Cybele. In the middle ages in Europe, the fourth Sunday of Lent was called a Mothering Sunday or Simnel Sunday. All the laborers or servants that used to live away from their families due to work were given this special holiday so that they can spend this day with their mothers. In 16th century England, the elder son or daughter used to bake a special cake for their mother called the Simnel cake which was a dried fruit cake with two layers of almond paste. In the United States, Mother's Day was established by Anna Jarvis to honor the Mothers who lost their sons in the Civil War.
Today, Mother's day celebrations have spread across the globe. People spend this special day with their mothers, giving them love and care, appreciating their hard work and thanking them in different ways. Though Mothers need this love and appreciation every single day but this day is indeed special for them as it's a day where all mothers are honored and cared.
