Halloween, celebrated each year on October 31st, has ancient roots that trace back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin, allowing spirits to roam the earth. To ward off malevolent forces, people dressed in animal skins and lit bonfires. With the spread of Christianity, Samhain evolved as All Hallows' Eve, the evening before All Saints’ Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. Over time, the customs of disguising oneself and making offerings to spirits transformed, merging with folklore to become the Halloween we know today.

Image

As Halloween evolved, it became a night associated with spooky tales, including the legend of "Stingy Jack." According to folklore, Jack was a man so cunning that he tricked the Devil himself. After his death, neither heaven nor hell would accept him, leaving him to wander the earth with only a carved-out turnip to light his way—a symbol that eventually became the modern-day jack-o'-lantern. Halloween stories like these continue to inspire spine-chilling tales. One such tale is the urban legend of the "Haunted Hitchhiker," where a driver picks up a young woman on a lonely road, only for her to vanish upon arrival at her destination, leaving nothing but an eerie silence and a sense of dread. Stories like these add a touch of fear and excitement to Halloween celebrations.

Image

Today, Halloween is celebrated worldwide, with each country adding its unique twist. In the United States, the holiday is marked by elaborate costumes, trick-or-treating, and haunted house attractions. Mexico celebrates Día de los Muertos, a holiday with roots in indigenous traditions, honoring ancestors with colorful altars, sugar skulls, and marigold flowers. Meanwhile, countries like Japan have embraced Halloween's costume and party culture, turning entire districts into festive hubs. Across Europe, traditions vary, with some opting for bonfires and horror movie marathons, while others enjoy ghost tours and themed festivals. As Halloween grows increasingly global, it becomes a night not only for honoring ancient traditions but for reveling in the eerie and unknown, where all ages can participate in a celebration of fear, fantasy, and fun.

We all know Halloween is all about the costume, and to get the costume right, you can't just put up some things together and call it a day. You have to get the, pardon my Gen-z vocab, but, get the vibe right, and to get the vibe right, you need to get the moodboard right.

But who will be the judge of that? We, the CCs, of course! With our flair for creativity, drama, and everything else, we present to you

So what is a moodboard? A mood board is a type of visual presentation or 'collage' consisting of images, text, and samples of objects in a composition. It can be based on a set topic or can be any material chosen at random. A mood board can convey a general idea or feeling about a subject.

We have listed a few characters across fandoms in the next post (followed by FAQs), and you have to design a moodboard that reflects each character's aesthetics and personality. We are also providing a small character sketch for each character to help you.

For example, this is what the moodboard would look for Harley Quinn from DCEU.

The size of the canvas should be 720*720 pixels.

You can pick one character from each fandom and send in one entry per character. In total, you can send 5 entries. You can send for 1 fandom or all 5, that's upto you, or you can pick more than one fandoms without necessarily sending in 5 entries.

You have to stick to images representing the character.

You have to include at least 9 images. The sizes of the images can be anything within the canvas.

The character sketches below are just an overview, you needn't stick to elements based on just the character sketch, but go beyond that, as long as it fits the character's aesthetics, personality and/or their plotline in the mentioned fandom.

You can onscreen pictures of the characters/pictures, however, they cannot be the highlight of the moodboard and have to balance out with the rest of the images.

Similarly, you can include onscreen quotes of the character/other text that can convey the character's personality, but your moodboard shouldn't have too much text.

Offscreen pictures of celebrities are not allowed even if they are of the actors who have portrayed the character.

Morphed/AI-generated images are not allowed.

ImageYou cannot use pictures from the comics/fanart/fans cosplaying as characters.

You can use coloring PSD/filters/adjust the overall coloring of the images to your liking.

The graphics should be NON-ANIMATED.

Do not put your copyright on the graphics.

Your entries should be your original work. You can refer use ideas from other stuff available online, but your image selection and presentation should reflect your work.

The deadline for sending your entries is 20 November 2024, 11.59 PM IST via PM to oh_nakhrewaali. Keep the subject field as "Frame the Feels Submission”. Kindly mention the character names with your entries in your PM.

The mood boards will be judged by a panel of judges.

Upload your entries on [www.imgur.com] or [www.postimages.org] or any uploading site that supports images (please ensure that your account is not visible in the link or your account is not public - like with Photobucket links).

So what are you waiting for? Let your creative juices flow! We cannot wait to see your beautiful entries!

You can pick one character from each fandom and send in one entry per character. In total, you can send 5 entries. What does that mean?

In the above post, there are ten characters, two characters from one fandom (Bollywood, Harry Potter, K-drama, ITV and MCU), from each fandom, you can pick one charcter and send an entry for that character, Similarly, you can pick character each from the rest of the 4 fandoms, bringing the total number of entries from your side to 5.

Can my moodboard only have onscreen pictures of the character?

No, the point of a moodboard to explore a theme while not completely relying the obvious (in this case, the face of the character) So while you can use onscreen pictures, you also have to use images that reflect their personality/aesthetic

Can I use onscreen pictures of elements/ other characters related to the character/dialogues of the character I picked?

Yes, let's say for example of Harley Quinn's moodboard that I made, I could have gone for Joker's onscreen pictures, her Birds of Prey's pictures and even screencaps of the jail break sequence blasts, her blowing up the chemical factory etc.

Also, yes, I could have included her famous dialogues like "Pudding" etc in the moodboard as text. That said, those should be from the fandom you pick, so you cannot use quotes from the Marvel comics (or other images of any character) for Scarlet Witch or Moonknight.

I don't know both the characters listed under K-drama, what to do for that fandom?

You can either skip the characters (which means almost you'll send 4 entries) or you can google the shows/characters. You don't need to know the characters, just a basic idea should be enough.
