My parents wouldn't allow me to go to Chor Bazaar by myself. I've been there with my cousins and brother. Made many trips there and Lamington road when my brother and I built a computer in early 90s.
Well, well! Me too was an electronic hobbyist since my school days and have built many a project after picking up the components from Lamington Road. I too built my first computer in the early 90's and was among the first to take an internet connection from VSNL as soon as it was available.
Fascinating how the shops there keep evolving as the trends change.
Electronic components for DIY and electronic "kits' were a rage during the 70's. One of the most famous kit seller was Jetking which was just next to Lamington road police station. Built radios and amplifiers using their kits.
Later came the digital revolution and the Visha and Vega shops became famous for their stock of ICs.
Then came the VCR/DVD revolution when most of the shops converted to cater to spare parts for these products. When the DVD became obsolete the shops re-imerged as computer card sellers.
When the mobile boom arrived, these shops quickly became "Mobile spares" shops.
Today there are very few electronic component shops (Visha and Vega continue to cater to students for their projects) as most others cater to mobile and computer spares.
