The Indian Express’ man on the ground in Bengaluru, Venkata Krishna B, reports at 5:30 pm (two hours before the IPL match starts): “The good news is there is no rain in the vicinity (of the Chinnaswamy Stadium). However, some dark clouds are beginning to park themselves over the stadium. There is forecast of rain from 6.30 pm.”

The RCB vs CSK IPL match is likely to garner added attention as this could be the last time fans will see Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni together on the field as active cricketers.

For the record, even in the case of a full contest today, RCB have to beat CSK by a margin of 18 runs or more if they bat first. And if CSK bat first and make 200, then RCB have to chase down the total in 18.1 overs.

For CSK, even a washout of the IPL match will see them through to the playoffs.

Venkata Krishna B reports from Bengaluru

Huge roar as the covers are being taken off now. Only the practice pitches remain under covers, for now and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already started their warm-up session. But there is no sight of Chennai Super Kings yet.

RCB vs CSK, IPL 2024: Pitch Report

The average first-innings score at the venue this season is 193. Can expect it to be another belter for the biggest match of the tournament.

6:15 pm IST: It's the last weekend of the league phase of the 2024 Indian Premier League and we'll in all probability seal the final playoff berth at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It's the Royal Challengers Bengaluru up against the Chennai Super Kings in should be a mouth -watering contest between two traditional rivals. And with just one place in the playoff available, tonight's contest should turn extremely spicy as well. As far as equations are concerned, it's as straightforward as it gets for CSK - a win should be enough, a washout will be good enough and even a close loss should be good enough to secure a ticket for next week's matches. But they do need to win and then hope for a slip up from both RR and SRH if they're to entertain hopes of finishing in the top-2 and secure a place in the Qualifier 1 against the Knight Riders. For RCB, it's all about winning and winning with a margin.

A weather update: It did rain a few moments ago, the groundstaff are ready with the covers, but our man at the ground, Kaushik Rangarajan, says that both teams continue to warm-up with the CSK management having a close look at the surface. It results in Richard Gleeson marking his run-up for the yellow army, Lockie Ferguson has done for the red brigade as well.

Halfway through the season, almost no one gave RCB a chance of making the playoffs. But they are still here, having strung together a run of wins in what was effectively five knockout games. Hopefully, the weather in Bengaluru will allow them their shot at completing the greatest comeback in IPL history.

Abhilash: "I think you'll copy and paste these two lines much often - 1. Covers are coming off 2. Covers are back on." -- Hahaha, yeah entirely possible it could be that kinda evening.

There's so much chatter around this potentially being MS Dhoni's final IPL game. Well, never say never. The one thing with Dhoni is you don't quite know what surprise he'll pull off when. Even Mike Hussey isn't sure.
